party at the pool The long-awaited arrival of summer seems like something to celebrate – what better way to do that than with a pool party. And the Arrowtown Memorial Pool, now heated to a very pleasant 28°C or so and with grass to laze around on – or run around on – and trees to shelter you from the sun, is the perfect venue. That’s why Queenstown Lakes District Council is sending out an everyone-welcome invitation to a full-on family fun day at the Arrowtown Pool (next to the fire station) on Saturday 1 February. ‘The more, the splashier!’ they say. All lanes will be in party mode from 10 am to 4 pm, with inflatables, music, games and spot prizes. Don’t miss a free salsa lesson and have-a-go session with Alpine Synchro Artistic Swimming Club. There’s no extra cost for the party – you’ll just have to pay the normal pool entry (adults $3; kids $1.50; seniors/beneficiaries $2) or flash your membership pass – but remember to bring some cash for a barbecue fundraiser in aid of Aussie firefighters. The Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association’s competition to find the best photos of the Arrowtown area taken over the last year is on again with exciting categories. We are proud to be one of New Zealand’s most photographed villages and our n 2019 local amateur photographers are Photo Tim Shoultz, winner Actio encouraged to enter photos in this popular competition. This year’s categories are: Architecture, Creative, Macro, Landscape, People, Nature, Action and Junior (open subject choice, 15 and under). Prizes total over $1500 in cash and the grand prize winner holds the Jade and Opal Factory trophy for a year. Entries close 19 March 2020. australian artist visits Jo Bertini studied fine arts at Sydney University in the 80s and has been making art, writing and teaching ever since. She’s lived all over the world, and her award-winning works hang in important Australian galleries. In Arrowtown to run a painting workshop, she’s offered to give a slideshow and talk about her time living with a tribal community in India. On top of all her artistic talents, she’s known as a witty orator so this promises to be a memorable occasion. Jo will speak at the Athenaeum Hall on Tuesday 11 February starting at 10 am on the dot. Entry is free but a donation to our local Cancer Society would be greatly appreciated.

remembering noelene
We were very sad to learn two weeks ago of the death in a car crash of Noelene Tait. Although she lived in Queenstown, Noelene was an important member of the Arrowtown musical community. Having learned the violin as child, Noelene started playing again when she retired to Queenstown after a career as a nurse in Invercargill. She joined the Arrow Miners Band and played her fiddle on the deck of Old Red for many an Autumn Festival parade. At the age of 84 and even with rheumatoid arthritis she still loved to play. Irish music was her true passion and when the Fork & Tap started hosting Wednesday night Irish music sessions she became one of the regular players. Universally described as warm and vibrant, she always made visiting musicians feel welcome. The day after she died, Irish music filled the air at the Fork & Tap once more and regulars drank a toast – London Porter with a dash of raspberry of course – in fond memory of Noelene Tait.

songs of passion The musicians of Remarkable Vocals are returning to the Thomas Brown Gallery to celebrate the Valentine’s Day season with beloved pieces from the classical and theatrical repertoire. The recital features songs and instrumental pieces by Bernstein, Handel, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Cole Porter, Mozart, Purcell, Verdi, Einaudi, Delibes and Fauré. Vocalist and musical director Sue Patterson will be joined by accompanist Jeanette Robertson and singers Sally Geddes, Simon Green, Tamaki Iida and Alan Pickard. Kana Tahakashi and Masa Nakazawa (piano), Sheena Naughton and Lauren Christie (violin) and John Bell (guitar) round out the performers. Sue says she just loves singing in the gallery, describing it as idyllic for music both vocally and visually: ‘Thomas’s art and the gallery create a charming and relaxed atmosphere!’ Opera in the Gallery: Songs of Passion will be at the Thomas Brown Gallery, Speargrass Flat Road, on Sunday 16 February at 3 pm. Tickets are available from Wilkinson’s Pharmacy, Summerfields Pharmacy and the Lakes District Museum. The $40 price includes half-time refreshments. Get your tickets early, these gallery concerts almost always sell out! 8

your flop-free recipe super yummy egg muffin cups
6 eggs salt and freshly ground black pepper handful of baby spinach leaves, chopped 2 tomatoes, diced 1 onion, finely diced 1 red capsicum, chopped 1 carrot, grated 4 mushrooms, chopped 100 g feta cheese, crumbled fresh (or dried) herbs of choice Preheat oven to 180/200°C. Grease a nonstick muffin tin. Whisk eggs in a bowl, season with salt and pepper and any other seasonings that you like. Place 3–4 ingredients from the list above into each tin. I like to mix mine up a bit – I had some leftover smoked salmon and even some lentils that went in to this lot. Pour the egg mixture over each one, leaving 1–2 cm at the top so the eggs can rise. Bake for 20 minutes or until a knife comes out clean when tested. Remove from oven and, using a non-scratch spatula, remove the egg cups. Keep in an airtight container in the fridge or put in individual containers to grab on the go. They will last a week in the fridge. A couple of these are great as a quick meal with a nutrientdense salad added. Makes 6. 10
