The Lake Hayes A&P Show, sponsored by Arrowtown Lifestyle Retirement Village, is back in January for the 105th time. This year it’s all about the sheep at the Wakatipu’s must-do family fun day. Our ovine friends have always been a part of the show, and though there aren’t as many sheep in the Wakatipu now as there were in 1904, wool is making a resurgence and they’re very much a feature of local lifestyle blocks. At the show you will see hand shearing by a world champion, and displays of spinning, knitting, felting, high end fashion, wool creations from WoolOn, the best fleeces from local farms and stations – plus sheep’s milk and cheese. The old favourites will also be there – entertainment for the kids, country music, market and trade stalls, fashion in the field, all sorts of animals, the usual agricultural show competition classes and the traditional home industries for the whole family. This year the competition in the ring will be particularly fierce as it is a Horse of the Year Show qualifier, but the equestrian events go far beyond showjumping. There are all sorts of categories spread over four rings, covering everything from show hacks to saddle ponies. The Lake Hayes Show is Saturday 11 January 2019 from 9 am at the showgrounds. There will be shade sails, hay bales to sit on and a water bowser so you can fill up your own water bottle – no more plastic bottles. arrowtown village association news arrowtown wilding strategy
As part of the ongoing wilding strategy for Arrowtown, the AVA has sought funding to undertake the necessary tree control work in and around the hills behind the town. We are happy to announce that we should have some very good news in early 2020, which we will explain in more detail once all the paperwork is sorted. The AVA wishes to say a huge thank you to our funding supporters so far, including Central Lakes Trust, Community Trust South and Lotteries. Also, as the end of 2019 approaches, we wish to thank all the hard-working volunteers who spend their free time removing wilding trees from the surrounding hillsides. It’s hard work that usually goes unrecognised and is fundamental in helping us save our natural environment. So, thank you to everyone who has helped along the way, your efforts are most appreciated! Our postponed Spring/Christmas Chop will now be held in February. predator free arrowtown
Thanks to a recent golf tournament at Millbrook, the members and staff raised over $2000 for Predator Free Arrowtown. This is a fantastic amount and will go a long way to help strengthen the trapping network around the town. Over 2019 the network has now expanded to include both Millbrook and Arrowtown Golf Courses, which have established trap lines (thanks to Jimmy and Rick respectively), with Coronet Peak and Cardrona ski fields trapping the mountains above. Lake Hayes Predator Free to the south is controlling predators around the lake, and more private households are trapping in their back gardens. farmers market overcomes challenges The Arrowtown Farmers Market has been up against it with bad weather, but it’s going from strength to strength nonetheless. ‘We do our level best to work around it,' says committee chair Michael White, 'but the rain has made life very very difficult,’ Stallholders are happy with the numbers coming through on good days, and make the best of bad ones. ‘The camaraderie is good between the stallholders,’ says Michael. ‘They try to help each other out.’ The market is a great meeting place for the community and you’ll often find friends catching up over a coffee or a bacon butty, or sprawled on the grass with a picnic made from things they’ve bought at the market. The Arrowtown Farmers Market will continue over the holiday period, every Sunday from 10 am to 2 pm at the Library Green. There will be at least 30 stalls this Sunday, perfectly timed for your Christmas shopping! Take some of the stress out of Christmas dinner with this super-easy five-ingredient gravy you can make ahead and keep in the freezer. 2 Tbsp butter 2 Tbsp plain flour 150 ml port 2 Tbsp redcurrant jelly 1.6 litres chicken, turkey or beef stock Melt the butter in a saucepan then scatter the flour over it. Stir until it forms a darker, sandy paste. Slosh in the port, stir in the redcurrant jelly and reduce until sticky. Stir the stock in and simmer for 5 minutes. Freeze then defrost on the day and serve in warmed gravy jug. 10
