world of christmas A host of Arrowtown youngsters will be centre stage in the ever-popular Christmas Show at the Events Centre – among the performers are Isabelle Mahoney (in a lead role), Eve Pagan, Robbie Winders, Olivia Mahoney, Ruby Pullar and Isabelle Davis. In this year’s family spectacular Luke, Isabelle and Yule Cat take a magic carpet ride and learn about the traditions of Christmas and how the rest of the world celebrates. Director Margaret O’Hanlon says that kids will be taking most of the roles and doing the bulk of the singing in the show. They will be helped along the way by performers from the Queenstown School of Dance, Wakatipu Conservatoire of Classical Ballet, the Wakatipu Gymnastics Club and the Remarkable Men's Ballet. And needless to say, Santa Claus will be also be putting in an appearance! The talented cast of more than 60 has since early November been rehearsing toe-tapping song and dance number that are bound to get you in the mood for Christmas. This is the fourth year the show has been produced in its current format, and tickets are selling faster than ever before. Christmas Show: Stepping into the world of Christmas will have two performances at the Queenstown Events Centre: at 1 pm and 5 pm on Sunday 15 December. Tickets from eventbrite.co.nz. arrowtown business news The Arrowtown Long Lunch on Friday 6 December is a pivotal event in our year. The Long Lunch showcases the rich variety of restaurants, the beauty, history and culinary variety of Arrowtown. This event attracts national visitors, media coverage and promotion for Arrowtown. It provides an opportunity for locals to attend and enjoy a very special occasion, the only time in the year that our main street is closed for dining. This year the event has extended slightly into the next block. Diners will either enjoy the shade of the avenue of trees or that provided by more umbrellas in the unshaded areas. Parking controls will apply in Buckingham St between Berkshire St and Merioneth St from 8 pm Thursday 5 December until 6 pm Friday 6 December. Please check all signage before parking near or inside any road closure areas. The Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association Inc. (APBA), as a not-for-profit organisation, will be distributing the Long Lunch donation proceeds to worthy community-based groups. Any funds donated are considered under the mandate of the APBA’s mission statement, ‘To promote and advocate the historical and natural character of Arrowtown while achieving responsible and sustainable growth.’ 4
The APBA is the business arm of the community and mainly aims for sustainable tourism growth focusing on promotional spend and promoting quieter periods but also lobbies to council for better services and infrastructure.

carols on the green In search of good old-fashioned Christmas spirit? You’ll find some on Buckingham Green next week as the Arrowtown community sings carols old and new under the Christmas tree. Organiser Marion Botherway says, ‘It was just something that Justin Eden and I thought would be fun. We are hoping that there will be a variety of singers joining in from the Wakatipu High School choir and Turn Up the Music through to experienced adult vocalists.’ Arrowtown Cubs will be doing a sausage sizzle and Bendix Stables are putting together a light menu for carolers. Carols on the Green is at Buckingham Green on Wednesday 11 December from 6.30 pm. The Athenaeum Hall isn’t available that night, so if it’s raining the event will have to be cancelled.

your flop-free recipe christmas pudding
200 g dates, cut into pieces 200 g raisins 150 g sultanas 1 cup cranberries ½ cup roughly chopped almonds zest and juice of 1 orange 1 cup brandy 180 g butter, softened ½ cup brown sugar ½ cup golden syrup 3 eggs 1 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp ginger 1 tsp nutmeg 1 Tbsp cocoa 1 cup self-raising flour 1 cup plain flour custard, to serve Grease the base of a 1.5 litre heatproof pudding bowl and line the base with baking paper. Place the dates, raisins, sultanas, cranberries, almonds, zest, juice and 1 cup of brandy in a pot. Cover and bring to a simmer. Turn off the heat, stir and cool completely. To infuse the flavours even more, place in a bowl and let it sit overnight, stirring once or twice. Cream the butter, sugar and golden syrup until pale. Add the eggs one at a time. Sift in the cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cocoa and flours, stirring well to combine. Add in the fruit mixture 10
and combine well. Pour the mixture into your prepared pudding bowl. Cover tightly with baking paper and a layer of tin foil, and tie tightly with string. Place a saucer upside-down into the base of a large pot (so that it cooks evenly) and fill the pot a third of the way with water. Bring to the boil. Place the pudding on the saucer (the water shouldn’t cover the top of the pudding bowl), cover the pot and steam the pudding for 2½ hours. Every 30 minutes top up the water to ensure it doesn’t dry out. Remove the pudding and allow to rest for 20 minutes before tipping out. Serve with your favourite custard. TIP: You can make Christmas Pudding up to 2 months before Christmas. If storing until Christmas, leave in the bowl in the fridge. Reheat by steaming for 30 to 45 minutes.
