big chop The Arrowtown Choppers invite you to help remove wilding conifers at a big community chopping day on Saturday 7 December. This is a day for all age groups, and families will even take home a real Christmas tree pre-cut to fit a 2.4 m stud. Meet at the Chinese Village at 10 am. Barbecue lunch will be provided. a celebration of music Enthralling performances by a world-renowned organist and a virtuoso violinist will be highlights of the Central Otago Regional Choir’s spring concert in Arrowtown next week. Organist Kemp English is rejoining the choir in a dual role of soloist and accompanist after a year away. Guest artist Yuka Eguchi, Assistant Concertmaster of the NZSO, will join him to perform an unforgettable selection of music for violin and organ. This concert of surprises also features several choral masterpieces conducted by Alison Frude. It opens with Parry’s celebrated setting of Psalm 122, with its magnificent organ introduction and the energetic opening words, ‘I was glad.’ Two sublime Bruckner motets follow. In the second half, experience the magic of Mozart’s Coronation Mass K317, with its tapestry of personal emotion and exuberant joy. The solo vocal parts will be sung, as they would have been originally, by a quartet of singers from within the choir. Join the choir at the Athenaeum Hall for its second ever Arrowtown performance on Friday 29 November at 7.30 pm. Tickets $25 (school students free) from the museum. It was great to see the turnout for our recent AGM, very pleasing for our hardworking committee to see the interest in all things Arrowtown. Along with updates on the AVA happenings for the past year, significant interest was shown in our guest speaker’s presentation on the upcoming harvest of Coronet Forest. For further details check out the chairperson’s report on our website (in the menu click on About > About the AVA). Also note our new committee make-up, with four new members elected to replace retiring committee and giving a great mix of residents in our 10-strong committee. One of the community roles under the auspices of the AVA is local Meals on Wheels delivery. This long-standing service is valued by many in our community, and the AVA wishes to extend a big thanks to local residents Jean and Colin MacNicol who ably co-ordinate this service…so much so that the AVA committee has little to do with it! But Jean and Colin would love some more volunteer drivers, with car, to put their hands up. You will only be required at a maximum every two months for a few hours. sprig rosemary pinch fresh thyme 1 tsp sugar 60 ml vodka 60 ml cranberry juice 120 ml ginger beer sugar-coated cranberries & fresh herbs for garnish In a cocktail shaker lightly muddle together herbs and sugar. Top with vodka and cranberry juice. Shake with ice. Strain into a copper cocktail mug or a tumbler, fill with ice and ginger beer, garnish and enjoy!
