fireworks The fire brigade will once again celebrate Guy Fawkes in colourful, noisy style. This year’s fireworks night is Friday 8 November so you don’t have to worry about getting the kids up for school the next day. Everyone’s welcome to join the fun at nightfall at Wilcox Green on Nairn Street. Fireworks start when it is dark enough, normally a little after 9 pm. If the weather is dodgy, check the @arrowtownfire Facebook page on the day. As ever, if you have pets, please remember fireworks season can be terrifying for animals. Keep pets inside in the evenings, with the curtains drawn and TV or music playing.
dear lupin: a family affair Dear Lupin is Michael Simkins's stage adaption of the hilarious collection of letters sent by Dunkirk veteran and TV racing correspondent Roger Mortimer to his son Charlie, nicknamed Lupin after the wayward son in The Diary of a Nobody. The Dear Lupin book was a huge best-seller and won the Sunday Times Humour Book of the Year in 2013. This two-hander brings all its nostalgia, wit and pathos to the stage and adds in physical humour and genuine laugh-out-loud moments. The role of Roger is especially diverse, as it is written to include a variety of brief cameos depicting characters Charlie encounters over the years. In the original West End production the parts were played by James Fox and Jack Fox, and in this production the father-and-son casting is repeated with two successful local actors John Barham and Blaise Barham. John has acted in over 70 stage productions in the UK, Germany, Hong Kong and New Zealand. He performs regularly as a member of Clyde Theatre Group, mainly in comedy roles. Blaise acts, directs and produces for local theatre company Remarkable Theatre, appearing most recently in the leading role of Francis in One Man, Two Guvnors. The director is John Goudge. Digital imagery is by Scott Kennedy and lighting is by Visual Events. Dear Lupin is on at Arrowtown Community Centre at 8 pm on Saturday 23 November. Tickets are available from Eventfinda. 3

We know it can be annoying having tourists wandering in front of your car, but we are calling for patience and tolerance as visitors stroll around enjoying the ambience of the main street. Think what it would be like to visit a foreign town where you don’t know the parking and road rules. Take 10 seconds to let the moment pass, that’s our advice! And bear in mind our main streets will soon have a 20 km/h speed limit, a step towards the goal of shared use.

kapa haka and hāngī night Arrowtown School's popular Hāngī Night is having its third outing on Saturday 9 November. It promises to be a magical evening. The school’s senior kapa haka groups will perform the brackets that earned them top-three placings at the recent Ngā Pūtangitangi competition. There will also be sand art from Marcus Winter and the crowd-pleasing Crown Rangers band will round off the entertainment. To crown the evening, a hāngī dinner cooked in the school grounds will be served. Everyone is welcome to visit the school on Saturday at about 1 pm to see the junior kapa haka group perform as the hangi is lifted. This is a night you will not want to miss: if you haven’t already secured your tickets try the Lakes District Museum, but be quick. The event will raise funds for kākahu (outfits), equipment, transport and tuition for the four performance groups at school.

your flop-free recipe spinach, asparagus & strawberry salad
handful baby spinach leaves 2 bunches asparagus 1 punnet strawberries ¼ cup nuts of choice handful fresh herbs salt and freshly ground black pepper 2 Tbsp vincotto 3 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil Toss spinach in a salad bowl. Steam asparagus until tender and slice into thirds. Arrange on top of the spinach. Cut the strawberries in half (or quarters if
large) and toss over the salad. Dry roast nuts and sprinkle over. Add chopped herbs and season with salt and pepper. Drizzle with vincotto and extra virgin olive oil. Serves 4–6
