main street in flower Buckingham Street is blooming. For the first time this spring, the Arrowtown Horticultural Society has got together with 21 local businesses and the Arrowtown Creative Arts Society to make a stunning array of floral art installations for shops and restaurants as well as the library, museum and post office. Locals and visitors alike have been stopped in their tracks by the swags of silk flowers that festoon doorways and windows, fences and veranda posts, bringing life and colour to the street. Creative director Marie Arnold oversaw the project, with the help of Mary Phillips, Annabel Russell and Lee van der Geest. The displays were made up by a crew of volunteers and installed over the course of several days. This inaugural event was organised by Ali Soper of the Arrowtown Horticultural Society to promote the Arrowtown Spring Show. It ran on a shoestring budget and used foraged greenery and artificial flowers so the display will last longer than fresh flowers would allow. Ali says feedback has been enthusiastic, with some people saying they’re going to time a visit next year to coincide with Arrowtown in Bloom. And next year’s event is planned to be bigger and better! Make sure you get down to Buckingham Street to see the displays before they come down. They will remain in place through the Arrowtown Spring Arts Festival and taken down after Labour Weekend. 3
sign-off from arrowtown councillor Councillor Scott Stevens is standing down – here is his final column: Over the last five years I would love to say ‘job done’ as I sign off as Arrowtown Ward councillor. However, the job is never done. I did what I could to steer council thinking over two electoral terms, particularly as it relates to Arrowtown. Now the responsibility to continue this work falls on our incoming Arrowtown Ward councillor Heath Copland. As was the case with me and all the Arrowtown Ward councillors before me, Heath will not be doing this job alone. He will get the support of the Arrowtown community. Particularly our representative groups – the Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association; Arrowtown Planning Advisory Group; and Arrowtown Village Association. He will also have Arrowtown’s Shaping Our Future document to guide his decision making. Until the next comprehensive future-focused workshop this is the vision Arrowtown has for itself. By consensus, across two years of independent community input. A big thank you to all the Arrowtowners who helped me over the past five years and contributed their time to our common goals. We are very lucky to live in a small town that holds such principles as heritage values, environmental enhancement and protection, community diversity and carefully controlled growth at heart. It is no accident Arrowtown has Ministry for Culture and Heritage status as a landmark of national significance. All these parts together is what makes Arrowtown as a whole so special. We know that of course, but local and central government need to be continually reminded to handle Arrowtown with care. As Joni Mitchell once lamented, you don’t know what you've got till it’s gone. 4
arrowtown spring show The Spring Show went off without a hitch a couple of weeks ago, according to Arrowtown Horticultural Society president Jean Britton. 'We had a fantastic show this year. There were lots of daffodil entries, although the cut flower section was down due to the late season,' she says. 'The children as usual put on a fabulous display and there were more entries in the craft section than in other shows.' Trish Hamilton was declared Supreme Champion after gaining the most points in the show. Jean tells us there was great support from the community and attendance was up on previous years. 'It makes it all worthwhile!'

arrowtown in bloom Arrowtown is bursting with blossoms and every year the colour seems to get better! The flowering trees and the floral installations in Buckingham Street are really highlighting the freshness of the spring season. We’ve got some fabulous events coming up. Arrowtown Volunteer Fire Brigade's annual honours night started with a fire call so five members missed the start of the evening (and the photo) but got back in time to enjoy the rest of the evening at the fire station. It was another great night with speeches from the newest members, Kelvin Perriman and Ryan Youngman, which are always entertaining.

4 cups leftover risotto, any flavour 4 eggs 2 cups breadcrumbs 1 cup rice flour 100 g baby mozzarella balls, cut in half coconut oil for frying tomato relish or yogurt sauce to serve Put the risotto in a bowl, add two of the eggs and stir until well combined. Place the breadcrumbs on a large plate. Put the flour in a bowl and in a separate bowl crack the remaining two eggs and lightly whisk. Use wet hands to shape 2Â tablespoons of the risotto mixture into a ball. Press your thumb into the centre of the ball to make an indentation. Place a half mozzarella ball in the indentation, then mould the risotto mixture around the mozzarella to enclose it. Repeat with the remaining risotto mixture and mozzarella until it has all gone. It should make about 14 balls. Roll the balls in flour then egg then breadcrumbs and fry in 10
coconut oil until brown. Serve with relish as nibbles or with salad or vegetables as a quick and easy meal.
