the keys are in the margarine The Keys Are in the Margarine, a play coming to Arrowtown next week, interweaves hilarity with heartbreak to poignant effect in a close examination of the effects of dementia. This is ‘verbatim theatre’, a unique form of stagecraft that is real, mesmerising and truthful. The script is based on interviews with people with experience with memory loss – patients, caregivers, family members, doctors and support workers. In performance, actors present the edited testimony from those interviews. With the audio playing in their ears, they relay the original words and how those words are spoken – every vocal inflection, intonation and hesitation, every physical gesture and facial expression. The stories told in The Keys Are in the Margarine communicate the all-encompassing effect dementia has on those who are experiencing it as well as everyone around them. Profound and enlightening, the play provides deep insights not just into the condition itself, but also into what it means to be human. Reviewers have described the play as ‘deeply absorbing theatre’ (Theatreview), a ‘moving and inspiring theatre experience’ (Star) and ‘a production not to be missed’ (Stuff). The Keys Are in the Margarine, an Arts on Tour NZ production in association with Brain Research New Zealand, is at the Athenaeum Hall on Wednesday 2 October at 7.30 pm. Tickets are $25 from Eventbrite or at the door, with $5 from each ticket going to Alzheimers NZ. 3
arrowtown village association news a passion for Arrowtown
All of us on the Arrowtown Village Association committee trust all residents are enjoying the start of Spring. We would like to send out a huge thank you to those that helped recently with tree planting on Tobins Face, and the organisation by the Arrowtown Choppers to get this done. This is the second phase of trial planting, and has seen 400 exotic trees planted to see which will perform best for enhancing our loved autumn colours. This is all part of the exciting strategy to remove wilding species and replace with a mix of natives and exotics. The AVA continues to provide administrative support in further fundraising efforts by the Arrowtown Wilding Group. At the AVA we work for you, our community, in many ways. Be that lobbying council through the planning process or liaising with external groups over issues such as the current Clean Air programme being run by NIWA and the ORC. Come along to our AGM on October 24, in the community rooms on Centennial Ave to hear a full update.
We are thankful to have our QLDC councillor attend all AVA meetings and although we’re sad to see the departure of Scott Stevens we are delighted that AVA committee member Heath Copland will be the new voice of Arrowtown at the council table. This leads to our request. If you are passionate about Arrowtown (aren’t we all!) please give some consideration to joining our committee. Due to understandable reasons a number of our committee are standing down at our AGM. colonial women mean business ‘The greatest comefort to me is to get an honest living for my familey.’ Boarding-house keeper Susannah Wall’s words in 1845 echo the sentiments of many colonial women in New Zealand who ran small businesses – though not all were as concerned about the ‘honesty’ of the living they got. Catherine Bishop’s new book Women Mean Business: Colonial businesswomen in New Zealand (Otago University Press) explores the stories of some of New Zealand’s colonial entrepreneurs – the successful and the outright failures, the heart-warming and the tragic, the everyday and the scandalous. In October Dr Bishop will be coming to Arrowtown to talk about some of these women. Among them are two Queenstown publicans: the highly respected Jane McBride and the highly manipulative Eliza Jenkins. Dr Catherine Bishop will talk at the museum on Tuesday 15 October at 6.30 pm. There is no charge, and one lucky audience member will get a free copy of the book!

tomorrow’s conservationists Arrowtown School’s Manu hub (Year 3 and 4) are fast becoming experts on conservation after a term studying native plants and trees with the help of visitors from the Wakatipu Reforestation Trust and EnviroSchools. Their final visitor was Ben Teele of Predator Free Arrowtown, who came in to talk about native fauna. The kids made and painted nesting boxes for tītipounamu (rifleman) and ruru (morepork) that will be distributed around Arrowtown. Ben also talked about animal predators and even brought in a dead weasel, stoat

and ferret for the students to touch and compare. Teacher Yvonne Culling says, ‘The children have been really motivated to learn about native birds, plants and predators. Ben was extremely impressed by how much our students knew!’

your flop-free recipe chicken bites with chilli aioli
½ cup plain flour (or GF) 2 eggs, whisked 1 cup quinoa flakes 2 chicken breasts, sliced into bite-size pieces oil for cooking fresh chillis, sliced radishes, thinly sliced aioli Put the flour, eggs and quinoa flakes in 3 separate bowls. Dust the chicken in the flour, then coat with the egg before rolling in the quinoa flakes. Fill a deep-sided frypan with oil
and heat until a cube of bread tossed in rises to the surface. Fry the chicken in batches for about 5 minutes or until golden and cooked through. Drain on a paper towel. Plate up with the sliced radishes and chillis with aioli on the side.
