arts festival The programme for the newly revitalised Arrowtown Spring Arts Festival in October has been released and tickets go on sale tomorrow. Get in quick to book your spot for a variety of workshops, talks and film screenings, featuring local and international artists. side-splitting comedy on stage With its first performance at the Athenaeum Hall tonight, One Man, Two Guvnors is a fast-paced live show that has a reputation as one of the funniest plays around. It’s British comedy at its best – a unique laugh-out-loud mix of satire, slapstick, one-liners, song and some bonus vaudeville acts. In 1963 Brighton, out-of-work skiffle player Francis Henshall becomes separately employed by two men – Roscoe Crabbe, a gangster, and Stanley Stubbers, an upper-class twit. All Francis has to do to keep this meal ticket is prevent his two employers from finding out he is working for another guvnor on the side. Simple? Of course not! One Man, Two Guvnors has had audiences rolling in the aisles since it opened at London’s National Theatre in 2011 with James Corden in the lead role. It went on to become a West End and Broadway smash hit, with an Australasian tour in 2013. It received a raft of five-star reviews and awards. Remarkable Theatre is bringing their production to Arrowtown from 12 to 21 September. It’s family friendly, and recommended for ages 10 and up (concession tickets for under 18s and/or full-time students). Tickets are $25 to $40 from Arrowtown Pharmacy, Queenstown Events Centre, Queenstown i-Site and Eventfinda. 3
councillor comment This update on Arrowtown goings-on from Arrowtown councillor Scott Stevens: Queenstown’s loss is Arrowtown’s gain, at least in the short term. A gas boiler upgrade to the existing Arrowtown Pool heating system will certainly be well received by Arrowtown pool users. This council decision came about due to the temporary closure of the pool at the Events Centre. Aqualand has hundreds of regular users. Not having a council-owned pool open in the Wakatipu for the next 3 months is not an option. So expect to be sharing our warmer pool waters with plenty of new faces from the wider Wakatipu Basin leading into Christmas. However this heating fix is not the long-term solution we have been working towards for the Arrowtown Pool. To bring this facility into the modern era extensive work needs to be done including replacing the pipe work, lining, cover, toilets and showers and reconfiguring the layout to make the facility more family friendly. With feasibility and design work completed I look forward to seeing this work rolled out over the next few years.
The current council term has only 4 weeks to run and my time as your dedicated Arrowtown representative is almost over. But before my 'retirement' there is still plenty more to do. get ready for the spring show With the Arrowtown Spring Show, a community event dating back nearly 100 years, at the Athenaeum Hall on Friday 27 September, it’s time to start coddling your flowers, finishing off your handcrafts and perfecting your baking. This year’s schedule includes sections for a number of classes of daffodils and other cut flowers, floral art, crafts from patchwork to pottery, as well as baking and photography. A children’s section provides for entries produced at home and at school. There will be non-competitive displays and stalls with plants and art. arrowtown blossoms into spring Ali Soper has a plan – to bring spring to the main street of Arrowtown. Her inspiration? A trip to Europe. While in London Ali and her husband visited Covent Garden in Bloom, when the shops and restaurants put on stunning displays of floral art outside their premises. ‘I was just completely overwhelmed with what they can achieve with some silk flowers and some know-how,’ she says. ‘I thought to myself it would be so nice to do the same thing in Arrowtown.’ The ambitious project has been on a fast track since her return. When just a couple of weeks ago Arrowtown Horticultural Society president Jean Britton asked for ideas to up the ante for the Spring Show, Ali put up her hand. It’s been all go ever since, sourcing funding, getting the support of local businesses and bringing skilled volunteers in to make and maintain the floral art installations. Ali says the response has been amazing. A lot of businesses have already become involved, and florist Marie Arnold is on board as creative director to make sure all the installations are top-notch. A donation from the Arrowtown Creative Arts Society has allowed the event to grow from just a short spell around the Spring Show into a month-long spectacular that will no doubt be the toast of Instagram. The installations will go in ready for a September 24 launch and taken down at the end of October.If you’d like to get involved, as a business, as a volunteer, to donate money or good quality silk flowers, please email hellospring@arrowtowninbloom.co.nz. 8

your flop-free recipe banana bread ⅓ cup melted coconut oil ½ cup honey or maple syrup 2 eggs 1 cup mashed ripe bananas ¼ cup milk of choice 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon 1¾ cups wholewheat flour Optional – chopped walnuts, dried fruit, chocolate chips Preheat oven to 160°C. Grease a loaf pan. In a large bowl, beat the oil and honey together. Add the eggs and beat well, then whisk in the mashed bananas and milk. Add the baking soda, vanilla, salt and cinnamon, and whisk to blend. Lastly, stir in the flour, just until combined. Pour the batter into the loaf pan. Bake for 45 minutes, or until a knife inserted into the centre comes out clean. Let the bread cool in the loaf pan for 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool for 20 minutes before slicing. If you can't wait that long just eat warm with some yoghurt or ice cream. 10

For years he has made sure Arrowtown’s favourite river rope swing (down near Norfolk St) is safe, giving it a yearly audit and upgrading it as needed. He's also a legend as a cub leader.
