klezmer with the kugels The Kugels are coming back to Arrowtown with an evening of klezmer music described as wild, spirited and haunting. In the Kugels, four top musicians have joined together in their love of klezmer, the feisty folk music of the Ashkenazi Jews of Eastern Europe. Robin Perks, Debbie Rawson and Jacqueline Nordon (all three former members of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra) and accordionist and New Zealand Arts Laureate Ross Harris were a great hit when they toured with Arts on Tour NZ in 2016. Now they’re touring again with music that will make you want to dance. The programme features Ross's original compositions interspersed with music from the traditional repertoire. It features the expressive sound of violin, clarinet, accordion and bass, laced with the reeds of the multi-talented Debbie Rawson on soprano sax, clarinet, bass clarinet and the Maui Xaphoon. William Dart had this to say about the Kugels in the New Zealand Herald: ‘The band is tight, with Debbie Rawson and Robin Perks by turns plaintive and zesty on reeds and fiddle, while Harris’ compositional ingenuity…is staggering.’ Not content to keep this music in dance halls and weddings, the Kugels will bring their exciting and evocative tunes to the Arrowtown Community Centre on Sunday 8 September at 7.30 pm. arrowtown village association news clean air update
NIWA now have 35 Odin monitors placed outside, and 60 out of 85 indoor monitors completed. They are working with Otago Regional Council and Southern District Health Board on solutions for next year. NIWA invites anyone interested in hearing about the results so far to attend a meeting at the Arrowtown Bowling Club on Tuesday 10 September at 7 pm. ORC have sent out 88 smoky chimney letters and will be sending non-compliancy letters out next week. Consideration is being given to what action will be taken for this spring and next autumn. With the warming weather, the Arrowtown Choppers will put down their saws and pick up their spades to plant 350 trees at the Tobins Face revegetation trial. Part of a larger strategy run by the Arrowtown Wilding Group under the AVA banner, the plantings will include maple, liquidambar, oak, elm, poplar and ash. The species have been selected based on low risk of seed dispersal and for spectacular autumnal colour. Small clusters of mountain beech will also be planted to complement the 500 native plants that were put in in the autumn. If you’d like to lend a hand, the group will meet at 5 pm on Thursdays from 5 September at the bridge across to Tobins Track. The planting evenings will continue until all the trees are planted. record-breaking rippas Earlier this week, Arrowtown School became the only school in the country to represent their region at the national Rippa Rugby championships for nine years in a row. The 9- to 11-year-olds, coached once again by Paul Winders, had a long campaign of training and tournaments to win the Otago champs and earn themselves a trip to Wellington. At the nationals they did a fantastic job, playing in the Scotland strip and finishing up with four wins, a draw and just one loss, to the eventual winners of their pool. Coach Winders says they finished 6th out of 26 teams: 'They gave it their all and I am very proud of them.'

Earlier this week, Arrowtown School pupils watched from a safe distance as diggers demolished part of their school in preparation for extensive redevelopment work. 'We are pleased to be underway and expect construction to begin shortly and continue over the next 12 months,' says principal Chris Bryant. 'Once the work is completed teachers and students will enjoy access to new learning spaces, staffroom and administration facilities.' 7

Arrowtown’s Nicole McLean has snared a leading role in the upcoming Remarkable Theatre production of One Man, Two Guvnors. She plays Roscoe Crabbe, one of the two guvnors, though things are complicated by the fact she is really Roscoe’s sister Rachel impersonating him. Triple-threat Nicole says it’s a pleasure and a privilege to be playing Rachel. ‘In recent years I have played several challenging and fun roles (Velma Kelly in Chicago, Simone in Serial Killers, Tanya in Mamma Mia) but Rachel is possibly the most challenging and fun so far!’ she says. ‘The fantastic cast and I have had so many laughs – it really is difficult getting through our lines with a straight face!’ The ridiculously entertaining One Man, Two Guvnors is at the Athenaeum Hall 12 to 21 September. your flop-free recipe silverbeet, mushroom and thyme frittata 1 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil 200 g silverbeet leaves, thinly sliced 250 g button mushrooms, roughly chopped 4 cloves garlic, crushed 6 eggs ¾ cup finely grated parmesan 3 Tbsp fresh thyme leaves ½ cup flatleaf parsley, chopped sea salt and freshly ground black pepper extra grated cheese Preheat the oven to 200°C. Lightly grease a cake pan. Heat olive oil in a frying pan and add the silverbeet, mushrooms and garlic. Cook gently for 1 to 2 minutes or until the silverbeet has wilted. Remove from the heat and set aside to cool. Whisk the eggs in a bowl. Add the grated parmesan, thyme and parsley along with a good dash of salt and black pepper. Combine the two mixtures together and pour into the cake pan. Sprinkle on some extra grated cheese and bake in the oven until the eggs have set and the top is golden brown. Cut into wedges and serve with chutney and your favourite salad. Serves 4–6 10
