loneliness and laughter In 1913 Annie Fox left her abusive husband and two children and followed miner Henry Chaffey into the remote mountains of Kahurangi National Park. And there she stayed for 40 years, becoming a legendary figure to the trampers, geologists, hunters and miners who encountered her. Solitude, at the Athenaeum Hall next week, is Martine Baanvinger’s take on Annie’s love, loneliness, loss and laughter in raw exile. We get a peek inside Annie’s home, Asbestos Cottage, ‘Where Queen Vicky and Aunt Daisy come to the rescue. Where jam and scones are served in Victorian dresses and the gun is always within reach. Bang! Woodhen for dinner!’ We also get a peek inside Annie’s mind and heart. The show’s uneasy, atmospheric soundtrack was created by Mark Manson, who presents the sound of native birds, Annie’s daily reality, as an extension of electronic music. In her review, Lisa Allen says, ‘Writer, director and performer, Martine Baanvinger, is utterly compelling, humorous and breathtakingly honest as Annie. Not only is this an interesting New Zealand story but it is told by an expert in an incredibly imaginative and touching way.’ Solitude is coming to Arrowtown on Wednesday 21 August at 7.30 pm thanks to Arts on Tour NZ and Creative Queenstown. growth in arrowtown’s visitors The Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association’s latest visitor research results are out next week – and you can expect some big surprises, especially in the visitor numbers. The research guides the continuing work of the APBA to promote the village to visitors while retaining its charm, heritage and character. Achieving sustainable growth is the goal but this can only happen if the town as a visitor destination is managed. The APBA’s focus is not just on promotional spend and spreading the load to quieter periods but also on lobbying to council for better services and infrastructure. The high summer season use of the newly extended Ramshaw Lane carpark clearly shows the impact of higher visitor numbers. The APBA has a strong environmental and heritage drive. It financially supports predator control work, the revegetation trial near Tobins Track and the project to light up historic buildings. The organisation also sponsors 4

events such as the Long Lunch, the Autumn Festival and the Spring Arts Festival. The APBA, which is mainly funded by a QLDC grant, represents retail, accommodation, service industry and restaurants. Its Annual General Meeting will be held on Wednesday 21 August at 6 pm at the St John’s Rooms. The visitor research presentation at 7 pm is open to the public. end an era let’sofhelp let’s eat! After nearly 12 years running Bonjour, Olivia and Wolfgang Reinhardt are calling it quits. Olivia, who is originally from Nice, says she’s already sad about leaving their French café: ‘I started telling all my local customers, and it’s pretty hard.’ In the time they’ve owned Bonjour, Olivia has watched her regulars’ children grow up. ‘One 16-year-old girl who worked with us last summer we had known since she was 5…She visited us in July (she is living in Dunedin now) and she said she couldn't imagine Arrowtown without Bonjour. All her life we've been there, she said with tears in her eyes. This was very hard for us.’ The Reinhardts’ last trading day will be 25 August. They’re going to stay in Arrowtown, and plan to spend their time riding motorbikes and breeding Old English Sheepdogs. ‘I may find a part-time job in Arrowtown in the future,’ says Olivia. ‘But first I will relax at home!’

radio kaos hits the airwaves Do you remember Queenstown in the Eighties? When people actually shopped in the Mall? When traffic lights were as rare as non-smoking bars? And a coffee meant instant and didn't sound like an Italian dessert? The year is 1987, and Radio K.A.O.S. is an independent station full of colourful disc jockeys and outrageous clients. Until, that is, the stock market crashes and Giant Radio moves in. Arrowtown’s Charlotte Graf has written – and will perform in – what promises to be a hilarious musical trip down Queenstown’s memory lane. Radio K.A.O.S. is inspired by her time selling advertising for Queenstown radio station Q92FM in the Nineties. It is directed by Margaret O’Hanlon and has a stellar cast of local singers and comedians performing iconic hits from the Eighties. Charlotte is a professional musician who has been performing since she was 14. She is the creative force behind La Nuit d’Extraordinaire at the Autumn Festival, and is a regular on the local stage, featuring in London Calling, California Dreaming and Twenty-Seven. She showed her comedic chops in The Chain and guided us through the maze of psychosis in Crazy. She has even portrayed Mrs Claus in the Shotover Jet Christmas show! record breaking rippas Arrowtown School’s Rippa Rugby kids have done it again, winning the Year 6 title at the Otago champs for the 9th year in a row. They’re off to the national champs in Wellington at the end of the month, making Arrowtown the only school in New Zealand to get there 9 times. The Year 4 team also won their grade, and the Years 8s came second.

Matcha is a super power in itself, containing the powerful molecule Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG) – for me this is fantastic as it crosses the blood brain barrier and helps to chelate iron out of the body. Base ½ cup almond meal ¼ cup fine coconut 3 tsp coconut oil 3 tsp maple syrup Mix together and press into the bottom of jars. Filling 300 g Greek yoghurt ½ tsp matcha powder 1 tsp lemon juice Spoon filling onto the base and put in the fridge to chill. Topping fresh blueberries (or thawed frozen) fresh mint leaves for garnish coconut chips Put the topping ingredients on and serve. 10
