bulls triumph The Arrowtown Bulls became Central Otago premier rugby champions after their victory over Cromwell at the weekend. It's been a rollercoaster year for the team, with some disappointing results along the way. But it all came right in the hardfought final with a 24 21 victory.
a night at the opera The Arrowtown Creative Arts Society has snared two Europe based opera stars for Winter Opera in Arrowtown on Sunday 11 August. Mezzo soprano Bianca Andrew is a member of the main cast of the leading German opera company, Oper Frankfurt. Soprano Amelia Berry has recently moved to London after a lengthy stint in New York. The event follows the success of the society’s Twilight Garden Opera in February – an enthusiastically received sell-out on a magnificent evening. ‘We are incredibly lucky to attract big talents like Bianca and Amelia,’ says ACAS chairperson Barry Litten. ‘They’ve both sung on major stages, and been winners of the sorts of prizes that recognise them as serious emerging talents.’ As they did with the twilight opera, the society has been able to access star performers through its relationship with Frances and Stephen Fitzgerald, whose Auckland Opera Studio plays a leading role in developing New Zealand opera singers. Both singers started as regulars with the New Zealand Opera. Bianca made her German stage debut last year and appeared with the London Symphony Orchestra and the Cambridge Philharmonic. Her teachers and mentors include Yvonne Kenny and Kiri Te Kanawa, whose foundation is one of her supporters. Amelia, a soloist with Scottish Opera, is a Malvina Major Foundation prizewinner, and won the prestigious 2015 AMP scholarship, which took her to New York for three years. It has come to the Arrowtown Village Association’s (AVA’s) attention that the Olive Leaf Centre Trust (OLCT) has applied to QLDC for leave to have their resource consent application heard by the Environment Court, instead of before QLDC appointed commissioners at a public hearing.
Some important facts you may want to know:
• QLDC has declined their necessary agreement to this resulting in an appeal by OLCT to be heard before a commissioner in Queenstown week of 16 September • AVA supports QLDC in this stance to keep the democratic process open to wider community involvement • Should OLCT’s appeal be successful there will be no local public hearing by independent commissioners • Instead the Environment Court would hear all evidence from the applicant, council and any submitter choosing to join as a section 274 party. clean air update Fiona Mangos of Otago Regional Council tells us that according to ORC’s PM10 monitoring plant, this winter’s air pollution is similar to last year’s – spiking above the World Health Organisation’s acceptable level of risk every time the temperature drops below freezing. PM10 particles carried in smoky air can cause health problems. In Central Otago and the Lakes District alone, around 60 children will be hospitalised this winter with respiratory conditions that can be related to poor air quality. ORC is determined to improve air quality and has begun monitoring to identify persistently smoky chimneys in Arrowtown. ‘We will be working with these households to help them burn cleaner, so we can all breathe easier,’ says Fiona. tips to better burning To improve the air we breathe, we need to improve what we burn and how we burn it. – Burn a hot fire. Use newspaper, and thinner pieces of kindling. Slowly build up the size of wood from kindling – going straight to large logs doesn’t make for an easy light. Only burn wood with moisture less than 20%. – Make the most of ORC’s Clean Heat Clean Air subsidy – most log burners installed before 2008 qualify for $2500 towards a cleaner heating appliance. your flop-free recipe edamame, walnut and mushroom risotto 150 g walnuts 2 Tbsp olive oil 2 small onions, diced 800 g mushrooms, sliced 4 cloves garlic, crushed 2 tsp sage leaves 350 g risotto rice 2 cans coconut milk 800 ml veggie stock 300 g edamame salt and pepper chilli flakes 2–4 Tbsp cheese Place the walnuts in a pan and dry fry for a couple of minutes until toasty and starting to brown. Set aside. Place a large pot on a medium heat. Add the olive oil and onion and sauté for 5 minutes. Add half the mushrooms, and the garlic and sage. Sauté for another 5 minutes. Add the rice, coconut milk and stock, bring to the boil then simmer until the liquid is all absorbed and the rice is cooked through. Add the edamame beans, stirring constantly so it doesn’t stick to the bottom. Season with salt and leave to the side, lid on. Heat a frying pan with a little olive oil and fry off the rest of the mushrooms with some salt for 5 minutes, until golden brown. Serve all together with some chilli flakes and your cheese of choice sprinkled over the top. 10
