water supply upgrade Queenstown Lakes District Council started work this week on upgrading the Arrowtown water supply to allow for both increased capacity and improved water quality. Construction work is going on at the Bush Creek car park and the wooden footbridge by the Chinese Settlement will be closed. Temporary bridges will allow access to the Sawpit Gully Track. The project is scheduled to be completed by 13 December 2019.
upcycle your recycle Arrowtown’s Matt Bennell and Maddox Newell (13) have embarked on a project to make sure your old blue recycling bin serves a new green purpose. Just a little background: Matt says that food waste in landfill creates methane, a greenhouse gas up to 28 times worse than carbon dioxide. And up to 30 per cent of all landfill waste could have been composted. Plus there would be an abundance of unwanted/unneeded recycling bins (18,000) within the district once the new system takes over. These old recycling bins will, if given to the recycling plant in Frankton, probably get melted down and turned into another recycling product. This isn't anywhere near as good as upcycling or repurposing the bin. That’s why, for $35 within Arrowtown and $40 in surrounding areas, Matt and Maddox will convert your unneeded blue bin into a compost bin, complete with clever design features that make composting easy and hassle free. ‘We’ll even send you a digital pamphlet with some tips and tricks to get you started,’ says Matt. Matt and Maddox have been converting bins since the beginning of July. ‘Orders are coming in thick and fast, a real credit to the clean green attitude of the country!’ says Matt. You don’t even have to wait for the work to be done – you can simply swap your bin with one that has already been converted. To get in touch with Matt, email matt@bennell.co.nz

councillor comment This update on Arrowtown goings-on from Arrowtown councillor Scott Stevens: IIt is a difficult period in the lead up to an election for Local Government. The Council needs to delegate authority for much of the decision making on council issues to the Chief Executive while the elections run its course. That does not mean sitting councillors stop work, and I am very much looking forward to continuing my work in the best interests of Arrowtown until my time at QLDC ends in October. If you have been for a walk down to the Arrow River Reserve by the Chinese Settlement you will see the next phase of upgrades to our water supply underway. It is also pleasing to see our Library Green get a new perimeter fence installed last week and I expect to see turf improvements follow this spring. However, it will be the job of our next Arrowtown Ward Councillor to advocate for budget funding to complete this and other Arrowtown focused projects such as the heating and upgrade of the Arrowtown Pool. With the planned closure of the Queenstown Events Centre for 3 months this October the need to have our own wellequipped local pool in Arrowtown becomes even more justifiable. This pool project is a good example of the challenges our new Arrowtown Ward Councillor, whoever that may be, will face. When I first took the proposal to heat our pool to Council 4 years ago the response was positive. However, after some budget was put into detailed investigations it became clear that it would take far more than installing a new boiler. All the pipe work and the pool lining, and cover will also need replacement. So, a $60,000 budget suddenly looks more like $600,000. When we are talking considerable ratepayer investment, we need to make sure we have all bases covered. But the length of time it takes to get such a project approved is an ongoing frustration for me. All I can say is hang in there. Good things come to those who wait and make sure you vote for a candidate this October who can keep the pressure on and advocate for Arrowtown’s best interests. Nominations open for council candidates on 19 July and is open for one month. It is important for the integrity of the Arrowtown Ward seat that we have a competitive election and I strongly encourage those interested to put their name forward. As a Councillor stepping down this year, I am working with QLDC staff helping give information on what is involved for potential candidates and I welcome any enquiry from people interested, particularly those wishing to stand in the Arrowtown Ward seat. 4

recycling glitch The new rubbish and recycling service has made something of a false start, with the first batch of recycling ending up in landfill. Here’s what happened. Erin Moogan, Maintenance & Operations Manager, says QLDC’s new approach is that recycling is about quality, not quantity, so Council has been making changes to the Materials Recovery Facility to meet very high quality standards for recycling. ‘We were intending to store recyclable materials on the MRF site until these changes were complete and it became operational again,’ says Erin. The changes have taken longer than first thought and as a result about 25 tonnes of recycling from the yellow-lidded bins had to be sent to the landfill. Glass recycling hasn’t been affected by the plant upgrade, and the first glass collection has been consolidated for shipping. ‘QLDC recognises this isn’t an ideal situation,’ says Erin. ‘Yet it is important that we set ourselves up well for the future and ensure we’re able to have clean, uncontaminated recyclables that reach sustainable markets for the long term.’ 5

comedy hypnosis night Arrowtown Preschool is venturing into new territory with its latest fundraiser: a night of humour and hypnosis with Ian Blaine. Organiser Lisa Burroughs says the night kicks off with an open bar and snacks available to loosen the crowd. ‘Then Ian does a group exercise to see who in the crowd is easy to hypnotise,’ she says. Those who want to – usually about 20 people – then go on stage. The 20 go through some more exercises to see who is completely under and about 10 remain. ‘Then the fun begins!’ says Lisa. ‘All sorts of funny things are done. None of them are too embarrassing – your subconscious won’t let you do anything that is against your morals.’ Then there’s an intermission – more drinks and food, and the exercise starts all over again with another group of volunteers. ‘It’s funny, belly-aching funny,’ says Lisa. ’It’s such a good night! your flop-free recipe grain-free seed and nut bars ⅓ cup honey (warmed) or maple syrup 2 Tbsp coconut flour (or flour of choice) 1 Tbsp peanut butter sea salt 1 cup of whole nuts, roughly chopped ½ cup seeds (I used pumpkin and sunflower) ½ cup dried fruit, roughly chopped dark chocolate for drizzling Preheat oven to 180°C. Line and grease a baking dish. Mix together honey, flour, peanut butter and salt in a blender or food processor. Add remaining ingredients except chocolate and mix to combine. Press into baking dish and bake for 20 to 30 minutes. Allow to cool. Melt dark chocolate and drizzle over the bars. Cut into slices.
