pupils light up the peak During the first night ski of the year, Arrowtown School's Year 7s and 8s took to the slopes of Coronet Peak in illuminated suits. The students studied light in Science and used this knowledge to design and make two outfits. The skifield lights were turned off for their dramatic descent and the event made it to the TVNZ news!
new orleans hotel reinvigorated The historic New Orleans Hotel on Buckingham Street has been given a new lease of life and is officially reopening Saturday 6 July. Arrowtown couple Kerry and Rob Sam Court, Kerry Andrews, Caroline Abbiss and Luke Noble Andrews together with Auckland publican Paul Lomax took over the lease of the hotel just over a year ago. Using that time to get a good feel for the business and its patrons, they introduced a new menu and began to host regular local bands, establishing the New Orleans Hotel as Arrowtown’s family-friendly sports bar and restaurant. Local designer Caroline Abbiss was charged with giving the interiors of the iconic building a new lease of life while retaining the true character and history of the building. The New Orleans will reopen with a more welcoming, open and comfortable space for locals and visitors alike. Established in 1866, over 150 years ago during the gold rush, the New Orleans Hotel is the only hotel still standing from its era. If only the walls could talk given that history – just ask Sam Court and Luke Noble from Lakeside Design and Build, who were in charge of the rebuild. After many years of touch-ups and cover-ups, much memorabilia was found hiding in the walls, including a menu offering 2 dozen oysters for just $12! The New Orleans welcomes you and your family from this Saturday – open daily from 9 am till late. 3
arrowtown village association news The first month of NIWA’s air quality monitoring project in Arrowtown has coincided with 8 breaches of the National Standard, including six times in the last week – in fact that’s every time the air temperature has dropped below freezing. Let’s look at what’s happening around this: niwa

• NIWA has installed 24 air sensors across town on power poles, outside volunteers’ homes and two at Arrowtown School. • Data recorded to NIWA’s computers every minute enabling animated maps of average air quality to be created. Available on a public website very soon. • 21 households hosting NIWA monitors to detect how much smoke from outdoors is getting into their homes. Another 30 residents waiting to host monitors. • 21 Year 8 students at Arrowtown School have joined the project team under the guidance of teacher Kelly Scoles. First to see the outdoor monitor data, they are learning how to create charts and calculate statistics to summarise the data. Their work will also be released through the project website soon. • The project will continue all winter and plans are being considered to repeat the project in winter 2020.

predator traps sabotaged Predator Free Arrowtown is engaged in an ongoing battle to maintain their traplines as a determined vandal repeatedly interferes with the traps. Traps are regularly damaged, kicked over or thrown down banks on the Whitechapel, Arrow, Bush Creek, Sawpit and Brow Peak lines. The latest attack was on the New Chum line, where every trap disappeared within a week of being put out. Predator Free Arrowtown's Ben Teele is disheartened – and mystified – by the damage. 'I've no idea why the person is doing it,' he says. 'We think they're a local due to the regularity and the tracks which are used. Maybe it is someone who doesn't want to see any animals killed. But getting eaten alive by a rat or stoat isn't a great way to go for a lot of birds. And these traps have passed testing for humane kills and only catch target species.' In a bit of good news for our local birds, Ben and Graeme Morrison managed to find all of the traps that vanished from New Chums. They were deep in the bush or over banks and took a while to find. 'We got quicker towards the end when we figured out which direction they were walking the track and how far they were willing to carry the traps before throwing them away,' Ben says. Replacing damaged traps is starting to cost the group a lot of time, effort and money. matariki set to grow Last week’s Matariki celebration went well despite bone-chilling temperatures. Organiser Jon Brooks says, ‘The stage froze within a few minutes of putting it up so the performers, especially kapa haka, were really brave.’ The preschool fundraiser is looking to expand next year. 'Matariki is all about reflecting on the year past, and looking forward to the year ahead,’ says Jon. ‘We look forward now to the event next year and hopefully it will get bigger and better as we move to the main street in Arrowtown with a much longer event, involving more of our diverse community from within the entire Wakatipu Basin.’ Photos: Paul Green Photography

your flop-free recipe broccoli soup 1 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil 25 g unsalted butter 2 small onions, finely chopped 4 cloves garlic, thinly sliced salt and freshly cracked pepper 1 litre vegetable stock 2 heads broccoli 2 cups spinach 2 Tbsp tahini ¼ cup Greek yogurt ¼ cup toasted pumpkin seeds Heat the oil and butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the onion, garlic, salt and pepper and cook until the onion is translucent. Add the stock and increase to high heat. Add the broccoli and cook until tender. Remove from heat and add the spinach. Allow to cool slightly before blending with a hand held blender until smooth. Put the tahini, yoghurt and a tablespoon of water in a small bowl and mix to combine. Serve in bowls, top with yoghurt mixture, sprinkle over toasted pumpkin seeds and serve with buttered baguette. Yum! Serves 4
