new rubbish and recycling Our new rubbish and recycling collections start on 1 July. During the first week, the red rubbish bin and blue glass recycling bin will be collected, and the following week, it’s rubbish and mixed recycling. There’s a handy calendar in your welcome pack, or you can outsource to your phone’s memory by signing up on QLDC’s website for txt or email reminders. It’s especially important to look after our glass recycling bins, as it only takes a small amount of contamination to send everyone’s glass to landfill. Being a glass recycling superstar is pretty easy, because you just need to know one thing! ONLY put glass bottles and glass jars in your blue recycling bin. All glass looks the same to us, but they are chemically different. Different types of glass don’t melt at the same temperatures as bottles and jars, so they cause flaws or jams at the recycling factory. That’s why any other glass (like heatproof glass like Pyrex, drinking glasses or window glass) has to go in the rubbish bin. Lids go in the rubbish too. All other recycling goes in the big yellow mixed recycling bin. Rinse out any tins and cans, and make sure the plastic containers have a recycling number on the bottom. We want to keep our recycling clean, so if in doubt, leave it out. Bin delivery teams are out finishing off the deliveries. If you didn’t get your bins when your neighbours received theirs, call QLDC on 441 0199.

where history meets nature 'Arrowtown, Where History Meets Nature', is the branding brainchild of our business association whose mission statement is ‘To promote and advocate the historical and natural character of Arrowtown while achieving responsible and sustainable growth’. Words are all fine, but the Photo by Rem Vis Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association (APBA) wants to tell residents more about its role to enhance the quality of life in the town. Recently the APBA donated to: the Predator Control Group and the Arrowtown Heritage Lighting Project 2019 from Long Lunch proceeds of $11,000 between them; QEII Trust for the police hut signage telling the story of the Mahu Whenua high-country land; Arrowtown Autumn Festival; Native Planting Trial; and has its keen eye on the bigger picture of the Mahu Whenua land covenanted by the land owner to the QEII Trust. The APBA is also working on the 2019 Long Lunch on Friday 6 December, and exploring other possibilities such as the Arrowtown Jazz Day in October, a family Christmas event and a 2020 midwinter event. The APBA is talking to QLDC with the AVA to improve signage to and around the river recognising that cyclists and walkers need clearer options. Funded by QLDC commercial rates capture, the APBA promotes Arrowtown and also strongly advocates for the village’s history and heritage with a focus on the CBD. It’s a challenge to balance between promotion and protection, and a tricky job to preserve the friendly and charming village atmosphere we all love. – Sue Patterson, APBA manager 4

local artists at five mile Five Arrowtown artists are featured in a group exhibition at the Wakatipu’s newest art gallery, MACAMOS. Marc Blake recently opened the gallery at the Five Mile shopping centre and the gallery’s latest exhibition, New Kid in Town, showcases a diverse group of mostly local artists. Marc says this show is a proof of concept for a visual arts hub. ‘The space we are showing in has been generously offered to us by the owners of Five Mile as an opportunity to add to the cultural health of our community,’ he says. ‘This exhibition solely came about from the demand expressed to me by numerous local artists who came in seeking exactly this kind of large, new, central space to come together and show their work.’ Arrowtown’s Jane Pestell-Litten is showing her painting Fierce, an intense, stunningly executed figurative oil on canvas work. Sue Marshall is exhibiting a large, technically masterful multi-colour screen-print that examines our local environment and mortality. Fiona Garlick has a range of bronze sculptures that investigate the contradictions of beauty in 'invasive' fauna. Jasmine Clark is showing three kupenga (fish traps), which hang as if floating on the wall. And Vashti Johnstone has installed a suite of imagined portraits of women and a beautifully abstracted still life. 7
local athlete at world champs Anna Claire Thompson has ended the World Classic Powerlifting Championships delighted with her experience in Helsingborg, Sweden. The 38-year-old Arrowtown contemporary art jeweller finished in 20th place in the under-72 kg open event – quite an achievement given she started competing just four years ago. While Anna didn’t record any personal bests, she’s proud of her performance in the three elements of squat, bench press and deadlift. ʻIn a competition where a huge number of lifters were failing squats and even bombing because of not enough depth, I got nine white lights for my squats and I’m proud of that,’ she says. Now it’s back to New Zealand and normal life. ’I’m so grateful to have had this incredible experience,’ she says. ‘I’ve been lifting right alongside my heroes and learning from and being inspired by the people at the pinnacle of my sport.’

crafternoon tea's first birthday For a year now, crafty locals having been meeting up regularly for Crafternoon Tea. Organiser Angela Rowson says, 'It certainly seems to be "sparking joy" for quite a few ladies...they all enjoy the chitter chatter – and everyone is so welcoming and friendly to new people.' The first birthday party on 20 July at the cottage next to the Anglican Church will be low-key, with some a birthday cake and some crafted spot prizes. 9
your flop-free recipe skillet brownie with caramel sauce 250 g unsalted butter 250 g dark chocolate 4 eggs 1 short espresso coffee (or 1 Tbsp instant coffee) 1½ teaspoons vanilla extract ½ cup sugar ½ cup plus flour 2 teaspoons baking powder ¼ teaspoon salt Preheat the oven to 180°C. Heat the butter and chocolate in a heat-proof bowl over simmering water just until the chocolate melts. Remove the bowl from the heat and allow to cool for 15 minutes. In a large bowl, stir together the eggs, coffee, vanilla and sugar. Stir the chocolate mixture into the egg mixture and set aside to cool to room temperature. In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder and salt and stir it into the chocolate mixture. Spoon into a cast-iron skillet and place on the middle rack of the oven. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes. Be careful not to overbake. A toothpick inserted in the centre should still have a little stuck to it. Serve warm with a scoop of ice cream and caramel sauce. Serves 6–8 10
caramel sauce 1 Tbsp butter, level 2 Tbsp soft brown sugar 1 dessertspoon golden syrup or maple syrup 2 Tbsp condensed milk 4 Tbsp hot water Melt the butter in a saucepan and add soft brown sugar, syrup and condensed milk. Stir over the heat until the mixture is thick with a rich caramel colour and leaves the sides of the saucepan. Remove from the heat and add hot water a little at a time. Return to the heat, simmer and stir for 2 to 3 minutes or until smooth. Allow to cool.
