jazz on a winter’s night The Queenstown Jazz Orchestra is bringing a full orchestral jazz concert to Arrowtown later this month – a rare opportunity to hear the region’s top jazz musicians and vocalists in an authentic bigband concert performance. For Jazz in Concert the orchestra’s full 16-piece line-up, featuring, will perform classics from Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Buddy Rich; as well as songs made famous by Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Michael Bublé, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee and Sarah Vaughn. Guest vocalist is James Tait-Jamieson, a New Zealand sax player and singer who has performed in front of audiences at Caesar’s Palace, The Bellagio, Wynn Las Vegas and Mandalay Bay on the Las Vegas Strip. The Queenstown Jazz Orchestra, which was formed in 2011, has played at most big events, including the Queenstown Winter Festival, Alexandra Blossom Festival, Queenstown Jazz Festival, Queenstown Wine and Food Festival as well as many private and corporate events. The orchestra will perform Jazz in Concert at 7.30 pm on Saturday 22 June 2019 at the Athenaeum Hall, during the Queenstown Winter Festival. Tickets are $30, available from the Lakes District Museum in Arrowtown or on Eventfinda. Doors open at 7 pm, and a cash bar will be on offer, courtesy of Wet Jacket Wines.

arrowtown village association news arrowtown ward councillor required
As many in the community are aware, it is with regret we have noted Scott Stevens is not going to stand as your local QLDC ward councillor in the upcoming elections. I am sure you will all agree Scott has been a wonderful representative of our village around the full council table and join in wishing him well, and understanding his need to spend time with family. It is vital that Arrowtown has a strong council presence, and this is confirmed possible by the reassuring recent news that we have retained our right to a specific ward councillor. However, this role will continue to be under threat as the population in the whole QLDC area increases and the need for a specific ward councillor is challenged by others. I am sure you will all agree the special nature of Arrowtown needs to be recognised, and a councillor is an integral part of this. Anyone who is willing, or knows of someone who they consider suitable, to stand in the October elections please feel free to contact Scott for a chat on what is required. A passion for all things Arrowtown will be essential, but
we encourage you to strongly consider this and explore the opportunity. Contact is possible via our AVA website if needed. At the same time we elect an Arrowtown councillor, the Otago Regional Council elections will also be held. Ella Lawton is stepping down from her role, and there will be three councillor positions available on the Dunstan ward (which includes Arrowtown). This representation is important, as air quality, public transport, our lakes and rivers, biodiversity, and pests are all under the regulatory framework of the ORC. Make sure you read up about those candidates who put their name forward in the following months. There are many issues that affect Arrowtown over the next election cycle, and it is important that the regulatory body that deals with the quality of our air, soil and water is as proactive and involved as possible.

let’sschoolers help let’sshow eat! off high Each winter the Wakatipu High School Art Department takes over the Lakes District Museum gallery to present Showing Off, a collection of painting, photography and design by high-achieving year 12 and 13 students. ‘The Lakes District Museum really enjoys hosting this exhibition every year and supporting emerging young museum education officer, artists in our talented community,’ Kelly Roos,unpacks the art says acting museum director Jane Peasey. ‘We provide a friendly gallery space where students can exhibit their work in public – sometimes it is the first time they have seen their work on a gallery wall.’ Showing Off is not just an exhibition – it’s a competition too. This year’s judges are Paul Green (photography), Che McPherson (design) and Marc Blake (painting). The judges will be looking for technical proficiency, conveying an original idea and the ‘X factor’. arrowtown matariki night Arrowtown Preschool is inviting the community to celebrate matariki on Thursday 27 June, from 5 pm to 7.30 pm at a new, bigger site – the Ramshaw Lane carpark. Matariki is the Māori name for the Pleiades, a cluster of stars that rises at this time of year and heralds the Māori New Year. At matariki people come together to remember their ancestors, share food, play music and tell stories. Organiser Jon Brooks says all the favourites will be back this year: music from Choice and Peti Seiuli, Flame Entertainment’s fire dances and the LUMA faeries. Arrowtown School’s kapa haka group will be front and centre, and the preschool kids will sing by candlelight. Throughout the evening lanterns will be released into the night sky. Jon says there will be plenty of choice for food and drink. Jay Sherwood will be there with his barbecue and Lake & Wood craft beer. pink ribbon event success Arrowtown Business Women’s Group organiser Rosie Jones says the recent Pink Ribbon High Tea at Provisions was a huge success: ‘It was really wonderful to see such a big turn out!’ Rosie says that thanks to the generosity of Jane Shaw and the team at Provisions, Quartz Reef Wines, Allpress Espresso and Stir Tea, 100% of the ticket price ($920 in total) went to the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation. ‘Special mention to Rosie from Rosie Flowers for the gorgeous buttonholes she made everyone – a special treat,’ says Rosie J. your flop-free recipe beetroot relish 1 kg beetroot, minced or grated 500 g onion, grated 1½ cups white sugar 1 tsp salt 1 tsp allspice vinegar to cover ingredients 2 Tbsp cornflour and vinegar, mixed together Add all ingredients to a pot and add enough vinegar to cover mixture. Boil for 30 minutes. Thicken with cornflour mixture and boil a further 5 minutes. Bottle into a sterilised jars.
