firefighter overcomes injury This time last year volunteer firefighter Sue Fussell was disappointed to be on the sidelines of the Firefighter Stair Climb at the Sky Tower in Auckland. This year she is jubilant, having achieved a long-held ambition and raised over $1500 for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer NZ. After months of training, Sue had to withdraw from the 2018 event when she ruptured her Achilles tendon running to a fire call. This year her training was going well until five weeks out, when she fell while on a training run, breaking her arm and injuring her shoulder. Sue wasn’t about to let interrupted training put her out of the event again. She just changed her goal to simply getting over the finish line. She achieved that goal, climbing 51 flights of stairs wearing 20 kg of firefighting gear in 27 minutes. She was inspired to push through by an encounter at the start line. ‘Out of the crowds came a family with their 3-year-old son who had leukaemia – he was hooked up to oxygen and drips and looked very unwell. When I was in a lot of pain and my lungs felt ready to explode, my thoughts went back to that family. The pain I was feeling couldn’t compare with what they must be going through – and mine would be over in minutes where they will probably have years of pain and grief.’ Standouts from the Arrowtown team were: Victoria Tovey, who won her age category and was 7th woman overall in the Firefighter of Steel event; and Steve Richens who came 13th out of 145 in his age category of the prestigious Donned and Started event. Todd Weeks and Shawn Coombe also put in strong performances. Between them the team raised $4500.

councillor comment This update on Arrowtown goings-on from Arrowtown councillor Scott Stevens: It’s Annual Plan time in Queenstown Lakes District Council world and now is a good time to acknowledge the excellent job the Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association (APBA) and Arrowtown Village Association (AVA) do representing our village and furthering its interests. Both organisations run on volunteer hours and we are blessed to have such a power of energy and intelligence involved in community betterment. The APBA represents the business ratepayers of Arrowtown with most members doubling as residents. The APBA’s particular area of interest is the central business district. Their Annual Plan submission to council, amongst other things, includes formalising a shared space in and around Buckingham Street and Ramshaw Lane. This concept tips the hierarchy of priority on its head. Cars are still welcome in the CBD but the priority goes to pedestrians first, cyclists second and cars third. Those that frequent the main shopping areas of Arrowtown will know that many of our visitors are prone to wandering aimlessly and a shared space will officially 4
recognise this and make the visitor and resident experience safer and less stressful. When driving in that part of Arrowtown we just have to accept this as normal, slow down, relax and appreciate the fact our home is very popular with visitors. The AVA represents all residents of Arrowtown and their Annual Plan submission looks to encourage council to spend more on maintenance of green spaces such as the library green and also to invest in the protection of our heritage features. Arrowtown’s historic Butlers Wall is a focus this year. I have built a very good working relationship with both organisations and hope that the next Arrowtown ward councillor who takes over from me at the election in October will continue the collaborative approach we have developed. I can appreciate it is not easy for small communities like Arrowtown to get the most out of QLDC. Having everyone singing from the same song sheet certainly helps. echoes of remarkable voices Familiar melodies from through the centuries are set to ring around the Thomas Brown Gallery at Remarkable Vocals’ upcoming concert. With Thomas’s fine paintings providing the backdrop, Queenstown’s own choral ensemble will perform early English madrigals and sacred music by Elgar – as well as popular music from more recent times, including show music and a bracket of songs by Enya. Also on the programme is a rendition of ‘Like a Singing Bird’ overlaid with the Scottish song ‘My Love is Like a Red Red Rose’ by Bob Chilcott. Karl Jenkins's 'Adiemus' with its unique language and ethnic style rhythms will be familiar to anyone who has seen Avatar. Featured performers include Wakatipu High School student Helena Hornbacher, Sally Geddes and Deryck Marshall. new path for cancer rehab Women affected by cancer have a new option for therapy as Arrowtown physio Anna Everest has completed her certification as a PINC cancer rehab therapist. Anna can now offer a full range of services to care, support and guide women through every stage of their treatment and recovery. The programme is designed to help maximise recovery, regain physical and emotional strength, improve body confidence and control. The PINC & Steel Charitable Trust oversees the training; if women need funding support they can apply to the trust to have sessions paid for. 'I decided to the course after seeing family members go through cancer treatment,’ says Anna. 'I wanted to do something positive to support others through their journey, especially in this region where services are limited. I want to make a positive impact on the women in the most difficult and challenging time of their life.' Anna has completed the PINC course for female cancer rehab – she says she hopes to do the Steel course for men affected by cancer soon. your flop-free recipe shepherd's pie 1 Tbsp olive oil 1 onion, finely chopped 2 carrots, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 1 fresh bay leaf salt and pepper 800 g lamb mince 2 Tbsp tomato paste 250 ml chicken stock 125 ml red wine 60 ml Worcestershire sauce 120 ml frozen peas, defrosted 1 cup flat-leaf parsley, roughly chopped mash 800 ml desiree potatoes, roughly chopped 250 ml cream 100 g butter, softened salt and pepper Preheat oven to 220°C. Heat oil in a pan and add onion, carrot, garlic and bay leaf. Cook until soft. Season to taste, add the mince and stir, breaking up mince with a spoon. Add tomato paste and stir to combine. Add stock, wine and Worcestershire sauce, bring to the boil, reduce heat to low and simmer until the sauce is thick (about 20 minutes). Stir in the peas and parsley and check seasoning. 10
Place potatoes in a saucepan and cover with cold salted water. Bring to the boil and cook until tender (about 10 minutes). Drain potatoes and return to the pan, then add cream and butter. Mash until smooth. Season to taste. Divide the mince mixture between four oven proof dishes. Top with potato and bake until golden (about 10 minutes). Serves 4
