my name is moana ‘Songs haunt us. They remind us of where we’ve been and hint at where we are going…a bit like Ocean or Moana, that mysterious watery highway that connects our Pacific Islands and our people.’ My Name is Moana is a 90-minute tribute to the ocean led by singer/songwriter Moana, brought to Arrowtown by Arts on Tour NZ. The show celebrates our relationship as New Zealanders to the ocean through a mixture of music, myth and personal anecdote. An intimate, uplifting and often humorous experience, it takes in garage party classics as well as the inspirational songs that have carried Moana and her musicians across 30 countries. Arts on Tour NZ audiences loved Moana and her fellow musicians when they toured in 2017. They loved them so much some fans brought their own guitars and ukuleles to the show and joined in. ‘We have travelled to some of the most exotic places on the planet,’ says Moana. ‘But the Arts on Tour 2017 journey around our own beautiful country was an absolute privilege.’ The judging panel of the Independent Music NZ Classic Record award recently announced the 2019 recipient is Moana and the Moahunters’ 1993 album TAHI. Needless to say, songs from TAHI will be ringing out in Arrowtown when Moana, her sister Trina Maniapoto, and Paddy Free return on their 2019 tour. They will be joined by Cadzow Cossar, one of New Zealand’s unsung musical heroes on guitar. My Name is Moana will be at the Athenaeum Hall on Saturday 18 May at 7.30 pm. The AVA, in partnership with the ORC, NIWA, and the Cosy Homes Trust, is keen to get air quality monitors scattered around town in order to start accumulating some useful data. If you live in Arrowtown and are happy to have a monitor installed please sign up at niwa.co.nz/arrowtown. NIWA is also hosting an information session on Thursday 9 May at 7 pm at the Athenaeum Hall. If you care about air quality come along, ask questions, hear the science behind it and maybe sign up for a monitor. warmer homes show

There have been changes to QLDC’s Arrowtown Ward: the boundaries have been extended to include McDonnell Road to SH6 and along part of Malaghans Road including Millbrook. The ward also retains its councillor, an option the AVA strongly supported. The AVA works closely with the Arrowtown councillor, who gives the community a voice when council is considering options that affect us. Our current councillor, Scott Stevens, is standing down. local on avenue q Arrowtown’s Emma Pullar is one of the stars of Showbiz Queenstown’s upcoming production of Avenue Q, the family-unfriendly puppet musical that took Broadway by storm. Emma, who is the daughter of late Arrowtown musical legend Kevin Lynch, first performed with Showbiz Queenstown when she played an orphan in Annie at age 11. After returning to Arrowtown in 2001 after time away she was involved in Joseph, Chess and Rush! She played Rizzo in Grease while she was pregnant with her daughter Ruby; the pair made their second joint appearance on stage in the 2016 production of Annie. ‘When I first heard Showbiz were going to do Avenue Q I didn’t know much about it and actually dismissed it – a puppet show you say – really?’ says Emma. But when she heard the music and saw clips of the show on YouTube she was hooked. Rehearsals have been a challenge for Emma. 'Learning to be a puppeteer is adding a whole new dimension to just singing and acting on a stage!' Emma says audiences can expect to be thoroughly entertained. ‘It’s an R18 show, so don’t bring the kids – there’s puppet nudity, puppet sex, and some hilarious puppet interactions. The music is fantastic, the storyline topical, engaging and entertaining.’ Show dates are 16 to 25 May at the Memorial Centre. Tickets from eventfinda.co.nz. 5

look back at festival Festival coordinator Carole Watts says the 35th Akarua Arrowtown Autumn Festival was a resounding success despite some weather challenges. The rain meant the market and the Pie, Pint and Pinot had to be held in the car park but the weather did not interrupt the outdoor screening of Back to the Future, which had a full house of approximately 200. There were also full houses for La Nuit d’Extraordinaire, and for the Quiz Night. The new Festival Fun Run, with its water slide at the finish line, lived up to its name, and the children's workshops

were very well supported. The festival committee would like to thank festival sponsors and funders, as well the volunteers. ‘Thank you also to our local businesses who put up with road closures and a massive influx of visitors to the town over the five days,’ Carole says.

the air that we breathe There’s a reason the Cosy Homes Trust, ORC and NIWA are working together improve air quality in Arrowtown. It’s because the air is making us sick. In winter Arrowtown has some of the worst air pollution in New Zealand because so many of us use inefficient fires to heat our homes. It comes at a very real cost: SDHB stats show that each year, on average, 60 Queenstown-Lakes District and Central Otago children under 14 are hospitalised for more than one night with a condition that is at least partly attributable to poor air quality. These conditions include pneumonia, respiratory tract infections and asthma/bronchitis. ORC acknowledges that air
pollution is not the only factor in these conditions. But the evidence is clear: there are associations between high air pollution and these symptoms, especially in children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems or pre-existing asthma. The advice from ORC: – The wetter the firewood = the more smoke = the more pollution – Only burn wood with less than 20% moisture content – Plan to buy and stack your wood before Christmas – Don’t burn coal, rubbish, green waste or treated timber – we all breathe what you burn. – Upgrade your burner using the ORC subsidy.
