rugby’s big weekend Easter weekend was full of rugby and reminiscing for Arrowtown Rugby Club as it celebrated its 30th anniversary with a full slate of activities at Jack Reid Park. First up on Friday was a registration evening with a Q & A with club stalwarts and an appearance by All Blacks legend Frank Bunce. Saturday saw the premiers play the Battle of the Basin, a White Horse Cup challenge by Wakatipu. The Arrowtown Bulls walked out in special jubilee jerseys in the club’s original colours but couldn’t hold back an inspired Wakatipu team. Persistent rain deterred some supporters, but club vice-president Amy Wilson-White says the crowd had a great time thanks to an epic struggle on the field and the antics of the club’s new mascot. The new club rooms, where supporters can get hot food and drink and watch the game in the dry, were also a big hit. ‘We have been working for over a decade to get our new club rooms,’ says Amy. ‘We wanted to provide a more family atmosphere…it was great to see so many families, the future of Arrowtown Rugby Club, come out.’ On Saturday night a function drew 150 current and former members from as far away as Australia. Frank Bunce again spoke, club president Simon Spark was given a life membership, and after a three-course dinner the Crown Rangers performed with guest Jordan Luck. The following day there were a few sore heads for the Arrowtown vs Wakatipu golden oldies match but it was still heartily contested. Amy says the whole weekend was a huge success. ‘We were overwhelmed by the support of members new and old. It was so great to catch up with people from our community over the last 30 years. We think Arrowtown Rugby Club is an integral part of our community.’ 3
councillor comment This update on Arrowtown goings-on from Arrowtown councillor Scott Stevens: A big step forward for Arrowtown last week when council voted to transfer land at Jopp Street to the Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust. As your Arrowtown Ward councillor, the decision pathway was cleared when the District Plan Commission recommended this 3.6 hectare site (the former wastewater settling ponds for Arrowtown) be added to Arrowtown’s Urban Growth Boundary. I had made my position very clear, that I would not support Jopp Street urban development until such point as the District Plan Commission made its recommendations. The Independent Hearings Panel recommended this land be rezoned low-density suburban residential and included it in the Urban Growth Boundary of Arrowtown. The Hearings Panel noted in their recommendations it would be 'a seamless extension to the existing urban landscape'. This extension was also earmarked for housing in Arrowtown’s 2003 Community Plan. The only question that remained was who would develop it. A private developer likely to offer more of the same land prices for sale in subdivisions like Linksgate and Arrowfields with no long-term affordability benefit, or our own ratepayerbacked community trust that would hold the land in community ownership forever? This council decision does not fast-track development. It only transfers ownership to the Trust and allows them to begin the process of seeking resource consent. Although I support this proposal, others may not, and the RMA process will examine the development proposal in more detail. let’s help let’s eat! Let’s Eat! is on a mission to reduce the amount of food being wasted and feed Wakatipu people who are needing support (for whatever reason). The group, which is part of Baskets of Blessing, collects quality surplus food from supermarkets and a volunteer team cooks it into delicious, nutritious frozen meals. These meals are distributed to those in the community that are going through a difficult time. Once a week Let’s Eat does a big cook-up at St John’s in Arrowtown from 10 am to 3 pm, and that’s where they could use your help. They’re looking for volunteers to help with the cooking, as well as contributions of certain pantry foods. To find out more go find @ basketblessingspage on Facebook. public notices Let's Eat storage needed - If someone has space in their garage and would be willing to have one of our freezers to store meals for us to make our distribution a bit easier, please get in touch. We are mainly looking at Arrowtown / Dalefield, Frankton, Arthurs Point and Jacks Point. It doesn't require you to become a volunteer, we would just need regular access for our volunteers to pick up meals for distribution. We will communicate about pick up dates and times beforehand. arrowtowner to lift for new zealand Anna Claire Thompson packs a lot into each day. She’s mum to three, makes and sells jewellery, is an airbnb host – and she trains as a strength athlete. Now she’s reached the pinnacle of her chosen sport, having been selected to represent New Zealand at the International Powerlifting Federation Classic World Championships in Helsingborg, Sweden, in June. ‘What a privilege to get to compete at that level,’ she says. ‘I know there’s a thousand other people out there that could be better lifters than me. I’m lucky to be in the situation that I have the time to train, the resources to travel across the other side of the world, and the physical and mental health to follow through and lift on the platform among the best drugfree powerlifters in the world.’ For Anna, who trains at the Events Centre and at her home gym, which she has named The Forge, the goal is not to win a medal. It to lift alongside her idols, including Kimberly Walford, one of the best powerlifters of all time. leaders’ high honour Two of Arrowtown’s cub leaders celebrated completion of their scouting leadership training in a unique way recently – by scaling a mountain. This was Bod Boden and Ika Willett's second climb up Single Cone together, but this time they took cubs Ben and Albie Boden, venturer Nick Thompson and training leader Greg Fawcett. "to see Albie & Ben up there is amazing."Ika told us. At the summit Greg, also a Wood Badge holder, made the presentation of the Gilwell Scarf and Wood Badge, an honour reserved for scout leaders that dates back to 1919. Scout leader Lara Fletcher also completed the training but was unable to join the expedition.

your flop-free recipe anzac slice 1¼ cups plain flour 1¼ cups rolled oats 1 cup firmly packed brown sugar 1 cup shredded coconut 150 g butter, chopped 2 Tbsp golden syrup ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda 2 Tbsp boiling water Preheat oven to 180°C/160°C fanforced. Grease and line a 3 cm deep, 19 cm x 29 cm (base) slice pan with baking paper, allowing a 2 cm overhang at each of the long ends. Combine flour, oats, sugar and coconut in a large bowl. Make a well in the centre. Place butter and syrup in a saucepan over low heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 8 to 10 minutes or until smooth. Combine bicarbonate of soda and boiling water in a jug. Remove butter mixture from heat. Stir in bicarbonate of soda mixture. Add to flour mixture. Stir to combine. Transfer to prepared pan. Using the back of a spoon, press mixture evenly into pan. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until golden. Cool in pan. Cut into squares. 10
