show n shine The 2019 Arrowtown Garage Car Show n Shine is on Sunday April 7 at Arrowtown School from 10 am to 2 pm. For a gold coin donation you’ll get to see dozens of vintage, hotrod and exotic vehicles and there will be a barbecue, coffee, music and family entertainment. All proceeds to the school. wheelie bins are landing Soon you’ll find three wheelie bins outside your place with your house number on them. This is the first step in the switch to a three wheelie bin system for rubbish and recycling. Arrowtown’s bins will be delivered early to mid April. Collection of the three wheelie bins won’t start until 1 July, so keep using your existing bins and blue rubbish bags until then. You will get a separate 140L bin with a blue lid for glass. This is for only glass. It’s really important to put only glass bottles and jars in the glass recycling. Any other glass eg heatproof glass like Pyrex, drinking glasses or window glass has to go in the rubbish bin. A small amount of contamination could stop everyone’s glass being recycled, so we all need to look after our glass recycling. All other recycling (cardboard, paper, cans, tins, plastic bottles and plastic containers 1–7) will go in the mixed recycling 240L bin with the yellow lid. Rubbish will go in the 140L wheelie bin with the red lid. Rubbish bins will be collected every week. The glass bin and mixed recycling bin will be collected on alternate weeks. When your bins arrive: • check you’ve got the right bins because each bin is coded to a specific property • help out absentee neighbours by taking their bins off the street. councillor comment This update on Arrowtown goings-on from Arrowtown councillor Scott Stevens: After 5 years representing the people of Arrowtown it is time for me to pass the baton on to someone else. After much consideration I have decided I will not be seeking re-election this October at the local government elections. It is exciting times for anyone thinking of standing in the Arrowtown ward. When the proposed expansion of the ward to include Millbrook, McDonnell Rd and Speargrass Flat Rd is confirmed by the Electoral Commission, the interests of the Arrowtown ward councillor will be even more varied. We live in a very special district and I will not get any argument from fellow Arrowtowners when I say Arrowtown is the most special part of all. I encourage those with an interest in standing at the elections in October to contact me to learn more about the role. QLDC is a great organisation led by a council with the challenge of negotiating our way through unprecedented growth. It is not perfect, there is always room for improvement, and it is certainly not boring. I’m sure the next person to warm the Arrowtown ward seat will find the challenge just as rewarding. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time representing the village of Arrowtown and will continue to work with as much commitment as ever until the end of my term. Thinking of standing for council? The Wakatipu Reforestation Trust and Arrowtown Choppers are inviting you to get digging with a jam-packed schedule of community planting days. The first event is the WRT's working bee to clear weeds at Feehly hill at 9 am on Saturday 30 March. The trust's 9 am to noon planting sessions follow on Sunday 7 April at Whitechapel, Saturday 13 April at Lake Hayes, Saturday 27 April at Feehly Hill, Saturday 4 May at Lake Hayes west shore and finishing off on Saturday 11 May at Lake Hayes again (Slope Hill). The Arrowtown Choppers are holding a planting day for their revegetation trial near Tobins Track on Tuesday 23 April at 10 am. holistic spiritual fair The Arrowtown Holistic Spiritual Fair is back! This event is held twice a year and showcases the spiritual and wellness community, including crystals, card readers, astrologists, healers, reflexology and more. The fair is promoted by Spiritual Seekers Guide to Queenstown & Surrounds, which also sponsors a 'chill out' space. 'I thought it would be a good idea to have a space where people can chat, read a book and connect while they wait for their reading or healing, as the practitioners often prove very popular!' says Georgia Todd, who runs Spiritual Seekers. 'Josephine Litia has been organizing the event for a number of years now and has a good formula for its success. Those who have been involved before often come back each fair, which is a great sign – we also get plenty of new interest so each time there is new stall added.' The Arrowtown Holistic Spiritual Fair is on 7 April from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm at the Athenaeum Hall. Entry is free.

mainly music celebrates On Sunday 17 March 17, St John’s Presbyterian Church held a service and family lunch to celebrate 15 years of Mainly Music in Arrowtown. Mainly Music is a group for young children and their caregivers. 'Songs involve movement and often props and instruments,' says minister Carlton Johnstone. 'It also provides a chance to think about the God-part of life.' While some things have changed – moving from a hall where the pipes froze in winter to the Reid Hall in 2011 – the energy and fun continues. The Tuesday morning group can have up to 80 kids and caregivers, while the Wednesday afternoon group is a little calmer. Some original volunteers, such as Audrey Taylor and Eileen Toner, are still going strong. Another, Janetta Coulter, is now running the Mainly Music group in Queenstown. your flop-free recipe edamame, walnut and mushroom risotto 150 g walnuts 2 Tbsp olive oil 2 small onions, diced 800 g mushrooms, sliced 4 cloves garlic, crushed 2 tsp sage leaves 350 g risotto rice 2 cans coconut milk Place walnuts in a pan and dry fry 800 ml vegetable stock for a couple of minutes until toasty 300 g frozen edamame beans, and starting to brown. Set aside. cooked chilli flakes salt and pepper 2–4 tablepoons cheese
Place a large pot on a medium heat.
Add the oil and onion and sauté for 5 minutes, add half the mushrooms plus the garlic and sage. Sauté for another 5 minutes. Add the rice, milk and stock to the pan, bring to the boil then simmer until the liquid is all absorbed and the rice is cooked through. Add the edamame beans, stirring constantly so it doesn’t stick to the bottom. Season with salt and leave to the side, lid on.

Heat a frying pan with a little olive oil and fry off the rest of the mushrooms with some salt for 5 minutes until golden brown. Serve all together with some chilli flakes and your cheese of choice sprinkled over the top. Serves 4
