young golfer turns pro Laura Hoskin’s dream has just come true. The 23-year-old Arrowtowner has started living the jetsetting life of a pro golfer. It’s a goal she has worked towards with relentless determination.‘I’d go to Arrowtown School then Arrowtown Golf Club and practise there – every day for two years,’ she says. ‘I didn’t like to give myself days off.’ The practice certainly paid off. During her final year of school Laura went to the USA for some junior tournaments and qualified for the US Junior Girls’ champs. ‘I kind of made a name for myself over there and suddenly was bombarded with schools wanting me to play for their team.’ She accepted a scholarship from Oregon State, then switched to the University of Mississippi. ‘I absolutely loved it…if I could give any advice to Arrowtown School pupils it would be to get really good at a sport that American colleges play!’ Late last year, the pro dream became reality when she qualified for the China LPGA tour. It promises to be quite an adventure. ‘I’ve been told it’s really different, being able to manage your energy levels, being able to travel a lot and still being able to perform week in and week out…but I like pressure and I like playing for money so I think I’ll love it!' Laura is currently in New Caledonia for her first tournament as a pro, and then she will go to China to join the tour. She’ll be returning home when she can between tournaments so look out for her on her favourite local course – Arrowtown, naturally! 3

Still dreaming of lazy summer Arrowtown days? Images of river walks, picnics and barbecues linger in our minds, but maybe it’s also time to think about hazy winter Arrowtown nights. Due to our enclosed geographical environment, even with compliant wood burners many people struggle to keep their fire emissions within Otago Regional Council’s standards for Air Zone 1, to which we belong. Images of smoky layers hovering over the village and cloying the air we breathe will come to mind. To help our community prepare well for this winter, the AVA is working in conjunction with ORC, Cosy Homes Trust, Arrowtown Clean Air Warm Homes Trust and the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research on a series of consultation and communication events. Note these dates now: • ORC and Cosy Homes Trust will have an information stall at the Arrowtown Farmers Market on Sundays 7 and 14 April. Meters to test timber dryness for burning will also be available priced at $10 after a generous subsidy from ORC. • An evening science talk with NIWA and a daytime Clean Air Warm Homes Expo will both be held in May (dates to be confirmed). fundraising scouts It’s been all action for the Arrowtown Scout Group recently. Now happily ensconced in the sparkly new Arrowtown Community Centre, they are focusing on fundraising to enable around 20 of them to attend Jamboree 2019. Jamboree is big deal in the scouting world – about 4000 kids go and it only happens every three years. This year it is at Mystery Creek in Hamilton so a large amount of money is needed for travel. It’s a huge task but the Scouts have already been busy over the summer. They have been selling their very special Big Bay Rose, believed to be one of the oldest strains of rose to come to New Zealand and lovingly propagated by Ika Willett. There are still roses available so keep an eye out for the Scouts at the Arrowtown Farmers Market on Sunday 17 March. The Scout group would like to send a very special thank you to the Arrowtown RSA who have recently made a generous donation towards the Jamboree fundraising target. They would also like to thank Evan Dennison at Arrowtown Butchery who has been incredibly generous providing his delicious sausages for the Scouts to sell at the Queenstown Marathon and at the opening of the Arrowtown Community Centre. 5

a weekend of motatapu For the first time this year the Macpac Motatapu offroad event was spread over two days. Nearly 4000 competitors biked, ran or walked to the finish line at Wilcox Green – they came from 22 different countries and from around New Zealand. At the front of the race, records were broken, and for every competitor the beauty of the environment distracted from the pain of climbing all those hills. Perhaps the craziest local involved was Arrowtown's Joel Peasey, who on Saturday did the 51 km ultra run and then on Sunday warmed down with the 15 km Miners Trail event. Even this very tough guy had to admit on Monday that his legs were sore! The weather was perfect all weekend – fine but not too hot – and organisers declared the 15-year anniversary event a huge success. Entries open for next years Macpac Motatapu 2020 at 11 am 2 April!

it takes a bit of cash The Arrowtown Choppers and the Arrowtown Village Association are leading a revegetation trial to identify the best species to replace wilding trees on Tobins Face. The planting work on a quarter-hectare near Tobins Track will be done by volunteers on a community planting day on 23 April, but the plants themselves and things like tree guards, matting and fertilisers cost money. This is where you can help by going to givealittle.co.nz and searching for ‘tobins face’. Every little bit helps towards the $8500 needed!
beech seeding project The Wakatipu Beech Seeding Project is a communitybased research project that is trying to find out if of sowing native seed in stands of sprayed wilding conifers will help them regenerate into beech forest. This year is a mast year for beech – they are producing lots of seed – and the project is looking for passionate conservation volunteers to collect seeds around Arrowtown on Saturday 16 March. your flop-free recipe rhubarb tart 1 packet sweet shortcrust pastry 2 Tbsp raw sugar ¼ cup rose or sweet white wine ½ cup water 2 Tbsp vanilla paste ½ orange or lemon, freshly zested, and the juice 1 bunch rhubarb, sliced 1 punnet fresh blueberries 2 Tbsp maple syrup coconut shavings ice cream and liqueur for serving Roll the pastry out and cut into 20 cm rounds. Preheat oven to 220°C. Put the sugar, wine, water, vanilla paste, orange juice and zest into a small pan and bring to a low simmer. Add the rhubarb and simmer gently for 10 minutes until tender and the liquid has thickened. Drain the rhubarb, reserving the liquid. Arrange the rhubarb in the centre of the pastry, ensuring you leave 2 cm around the edges. Sprinkle the blueberries over. Fold the edges of the pastry over the mixture to form a rustic tart edge, gently crimping as you go around. Drizzle over a little of the reserved liquid and the maple syrup. Scatter the coconut shavings over. Put tarts into the oven and bake for 15–20 minutes or until the pastry is golden and crunchy. Serve warm with ice cream and your favourite liqueur. Makes 4–6 tarts 10
