Autumn Festival organisers are looking for a communityminded local to become this year’s Unsung Hero. The title is awarded to someone who goes above and beyond while expecting no recognition for their contribution. Past winners include Eeon Ryan, Mary May and Evelyn Dennison, Russell Mason and Marilyn Everett. Now’s the perfect time to get snapping – or digging around in the photos folder – as the Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association calls for entries in its annual photography Photo: A Dog' Life by Margaret Piper competition. Cash and other prizes to the value of $1200 are up for grabs for the best photos. And there are categories to suit just about any photo: Architecture; Creative; Macro/Close-up; Landscape/Nature; People; Nature and Macro; Action; and Junior (up to 15 years, open subject choice). Of course the judges will be looking for top-quality digital images but with today’s technology it’s possible to take stunning photos with a phone or ordinary camera. And to even the playing field further, you won’t be up against full-on professionals: you can only enter if you get less than 20 per cent of your income from photography. Photographs must have been taken in the Arrowtown area bordered by the Crown Range, Shotover River and Gibbston no earlier that January 2018. Selected photos will be printed and displayed in the museum foyer during the Autumn Festival, and winners will be announced at a function. choppers need your help The Arrowtown Choppers, a group of volunteers dedicated to stopping the spread of wilding trees, are planning for a time when the chopping has been done and pest plants have been wiped from Tobins Face. Karl Walker says the Choppers are now working on a revegetation trial to come up with the perfect mix of species to replace the felled and poisoned trees. The group will plant a range of exotic autumn colour and native trees on a quarter-hectare site near Tobins Track. ‘We believe the trial is an essential first step in ensuring the right trees are planted in the right place, which provides a solid example for delivering on the remainder of the Arrowtown Wilding Strategy,’ says Karl. The Choppers, who are working closely with the Arrowtown Village Association and the Arrowtown Wilding Group, are keen the trial should be a volunteer-led project. ‘We’re planning a planting day on 23 April that will be a community family-friendly volunteer event, which will be followed by weekly planting nights during the autumn/spring months.’ To undertake the trial they first need to secure funding for materials and seedlings. Karl says they are on the search for contacts, ideas and donations. ‘We are looking for funding of between $6000 and $8000 and would like to source this locally as opposed going through the traditional funding methods, but even offers of expertise, help or anything to assist in this initiative would be very cool!’ If you can help out with funding, please get in touch with Karl at arrowtownchoppers@gmail.com or 021 877 485. Queenstown Lakes District Council is coming to Arrowtown on Wednesday 20 March to talk about life in your area. From 6.30 pm until 8 pm in the supper room of the Athenaeum Hall, QLDC will hold ‘My Place’, a facilitated workshop to talk about strategies around longterm growth, climate change and housing for the Arrowtown and Arthurs Point areas. These discussions will help to shape future plans for Arrowtown and Arthurs Point and QLDC say they would love your input. The event will be a structured brainstorming session, with small groups spending 15 minutes discussing each of a range of topics. The key messages will then be presented to the room. bingo for a good cause In a little over two weeks’ time hundreds will gather at Lake Hayes Pavilion for the Wakatipu’s first ever Cancer Society Relay for Life fundraising walk. Among them will be local Kirsten Dennison and a gaggle of her friends and family. The Cancer Society is a cause that’s close to Kirsten’s heart. ‘I had 2019 8th March Friday my first dealings with cancer when my best friend was diagnosed,’ she says. ‘She passed away at age 40 nearly 11 years ago. We did At the our first Relay for Life that year with her family and friends…Then I Club Arrowtown Bowling lost three family members in a six-month period to cancer which was really hard.’ Doors open 7pm - 1 game at 7.30pm Kirsten and her team, most of them from Arrowtown and all affected by cancer in some way, are taking the fundraising total of the walk 18 houses inside very seriously.
