sign mystery The sign outside Arrowtown Gaol has gone missing. The museum's Jane Peasey thinks someone may have taken it home for safe keeping as it was last seen leaning against the gate after the big winds. If you have it, please return it to the museum, no questions asked! Just leave it on the verandah if you like. 'We don't need to know where it has been, we just need it back,' says Jane.
waitangi day first
This year is the first year local iwi Ngai Tahu have held their Waitangi Day commemorations in Queenstown, and students from Arrowtown School were front and centre in the celebrations. The Kamuriwai Kapa Haka group was invited to perform a haka pĹ?whiri to welcome the guests at the Queenstown Recreation Ground. After the formalities, the senior kapa haka roopu also put on a traditional kapa haka performance that wowed the audience. 'Our students were honoured to be involved in such a prestigious event,' says organiser Stacey Anderson. 'The crowd loved our performance and our students were buzzing after getting off the stage.' Stacey also offers a huge thank-you to kaumatua Darren Rewi for his work organising such a special community event.

arrowtown village association news The AVA has been busy over the last few months progressing Stage One of the Arrowtown Wilding Strategy. You can read the full strategy, which was community approved last year, on our website arrowtownvillage.nz. While you’re there, feel free (literally) to join up us a member if you are not one already. We are planning to have a public meeting in early March to outline plans for 2019, but in the meantime here’s a brief rundown on progress so far. control work
funding
Central Lakes Trust funding of $600,000 for on-going control of wilding conifer spread was confirmed in December. We are hoping to also receive funding from Community Trust South. A Lotteries application will be made in March to try and reach our targeted amount for Stage One. revegetation
Arrowtown Choppers continue to work on Wednesday evenings up behind German Hill. A large amount of progress has been made thanks to all the volunteers. Check out the Arrowtown Choppers Facebook page and head on up to join them! A community chop is planned for late March or April, watch for updates on this and join in. If we do reach our Stage One funding target, contractors will start work behind German Hill in second half of 2019.
In spring this year we will begin a revegetation trial near Tobins Track of a mixture of autumn colours and native plant species to replace the conifers. This will allow us to see what works well for when Stage Two is initiated and a start is made on filling in the gaps. information
We have installed information boards at two points near the river to inform locals and visitors alike about the work we are doing. A list of common questions and answers will be soon be put on the AVA website for those interested.

Public Notice | Pānui Identifying Queenstown Lakes District Priority Thoroughfares and Buildings Council is seeking feedback on proposed priority thoroughfares in the Queenstown Lakes District. This forms part of QLDC’s process of identifying priority buildings in the Queenstown Lakes District, as required under the Building (Earthquake-prone buildings) Amendment Act 2016. The statement of proposal will be available for public consultation from 9 February 2019 on the Council’s website www.qldc.govt.nz or from the Council offices at 10 Gorge Road, Queenstown or 47 Ardmore Street, Wanaka and every library in the district. The list of proposed thoroughfares include: 1–38 Ballarat Street, Queenstown; 4–26 Rees Street, Queenstown; the pedestrian lane between 13-17 Ballarat Street and Searle Lane; and 12–54 Buckingham Street, Arrowtown. Any person or organisation has a right to comment on the proposed list and the Council encourages everyone with an interest to do so. Submissions should be completed online.
