a treasure for everyone It’s taken more than a decade, but Arrowtown at last has a community centre. On Saturday Mayor Jim Boult cut the ribbon and residents were welcomed in to the $2.35m facility in Jack Reid Park. Arrowtown Rugby Club president Simon Spark has been involved from the start. The club's old clubroom was nothing to be proud of and their new base will be a big step up, he said: 'We can actually shower inside the building without having to walk 40 metres in the open, among women and children, with a towel wrapped round you.' Architect Murray Bennett was another driving force: he got the project off the ground, led the fundraising efforts and designed the building. The facility will also provide new home for the South Island’s largest scout troop. Group leader Karen Iremonger described it as ‘an amazing opportunity’ for the Arrowtown Scouts' roll of 120 (and growing). Local creatives have made their mark inside the building. Todd Weeks set off into the hills to find the perfect spot for a photograph of Arrowtown, while graphic designer Melissa Hinves worked with museum director David Clarke on a panel celebrating Arrowtown’s history, with another about the school to come. There will also be an art gallery. The centre is for all the community: the sprung timber floor is suitable for dance and gymnastics and the flexible main space can be divided up for smaller events.

councillor comment This update on Arrowtown goings-on from Arrowtown councillor Scott Stevens: If the summer of 2019 teaches us anything it is that Arrowtown cannot cope with peak-time visitor numbers when the majority arrive by car. If we cannot cope today, then we have no hope of accommodating expected growth over the years to come. Rather than despair we need to accelerate planning for alternative means of getting to and from our corner of the Wakatipu. This is why the Otago Regional Council’s Orbus is so important. The $2 bus service has already proven to be a game changer but there is more improvement that needs to be done. It is frustrating for all of us that ORC seems reluctant to listen to local feedback. From Dunedin they know best. However, we see it every day and from my observations throw my support behind a joint push by the AVA and APBA to get the double movement from Arrowtown’s CBD to Adamson Drive and back replaced with a one way loop through the business and residential zones. Another area of improvement desperately needed to make the service more attractive to local commuters is a peak-time direct bus to Queenstown and back along Malaghans Road. To give ORC some credit they are listening more seriously to this need and hopefully we will see this route added soon. Another major part of the picture is active transport. With new and improved e-bike technology the bike trails leading into Arrowtown are bringing more people into town from further away. It’s no sweat on a good e-bike to get to Frankton and back on the Queenstown Trail. For locals who work in Arrowtown this is now a viable means of getting to and from work. I am working with local volunteers with more knowledge on the topic than me for all-day covered bike parking stations to make active transport a viable year-round alternative to bringing your car to town. it’s the little things… Arrowtown’s Kinsey Hall is living proof that being a Millennial does not mean you have to be ‘Generation Me’. Last year the Arrowtown twentysomething stepped in at short notice to coordinate the Pink Ribbon Street Appeal and now she is finding a way to help people caught in a crisis. ‘It all came about when I broke my ankle and was rushed to hospital with nothing but what I was wearing,’ she says. ‘I was fortunate enough to be surrounded by family who popped to the shops to grab me the basics, however there were a couple of ladies in my room who weren’t so lucky.’ That got Kinsey thinking about her hoard of unused hotel toiletries. She made up little packs of items and sent them off to Invercargill hospital just before Christmas. Wanting to do more, Kinsey got in touch with Women’s Refuge and discovered that women often need basics such as toiletries, undies and singlets when they first arrive. ‘So I decided to do it again,’ she says. ‘I thought everyone must have a stock pile of those hotel minis they plan to use but never do.’ And that’s when she got busy on Facebook. ‘I am absolutely blown away at how amazing our little community is, some people have offered to buy or have donated new items while others have gone through their cupboards and had a massive clean out.’ Arrowtown Pharmacy has donated some goodies, Blue Peaks Lodge in Queenstown has given a huge box of shampoo, and Frankton Dental a box of mini toothpastes. ‘I don’t expect anyone to buy goods, but if people do want to really help, the hardest things to stumble across at a hotel are toothpaste, toothbrushes, razors, deodorant and sanitary items.’ And, of course, underwear! Kinsey will be taking donations for a few more weeks – you can drop them off in the fish-shaped mail box at 33b Devon Street. Please, only full, unused bottles and new items. 7
youngsters focus on photography For the first time in Arrowtown, here’s a photo workshop just for students. In this two-hour photography walk, two leading photographers, Colin Walkington and Toni Caldwell, will take schoolkids on a stroll, passing on the tricks of the trade. The photo walk is free, thanks to the Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association and the generosity of the photographers. Sue Patterson of the APBA says they are hoping encourage the art of photography by mentoring a new generation of photographers. 'As most children these days have a mobile phone, they are all equipped to take pretty good photos from these devices.' The photo walk is on Saturday 2 February from 10 am to noon and open to children up to 16 years. Registration is essential: email info@ arrowtown.com. your flop-free recipe cauliflower rice with spiced cashews 1 medium-size cauliflower 1 Tbsp coconut oil 1 red onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, chopped freshly grated ginger 1 Tbsp black mustard seeds 1 Tbsp curry powder 100 g cashew nuts fresh coriander, chopped a little honey pinch garam masala zest and juice of lime or lemon Chop cauliflower into large chunks and pulse in a food processor until the chunks form a rice-like texture. In a large frypan, heat coconut oil and cook onion for 5 minutes or until softened. Add garlic and ginger. Add spices and season with salt and pepper to taste. Add the cauliflower to the frypan and cook until it starts to brown. In another pan lightly brown the cashews then add honey and sprinkle with garam masala. When cauliflower rice is browned all over, spoon onto serving dish. Toss in cashews and coriander and squeeze the lemon or lime over.making sure to add the zest. This is delicious served when still warm but equally as good at room temperature. Serves 4-6 as a side 10
