water upgrade This time last year Arrowtown was under strict water restrictions as the reservoirs ran dangerously low. It's a different story this summer, with a combination of wetter weather, two extra bores in use and good irrigation etiquette by residents leading to no warnings from QLDC about water levels dropping.
sofia takes wing Born-and-bred Arrowtowner Sofia Machray is just starting on her music career but already she’s making an impact. The 19-year-old released a live single of Bon Iver’s ‘Holocene’ last year, and now she is showing off her skills as a songwriter as she launches an EP that includes three of her own songs. Music has been a lifelong passion for Sofia. She got her first guitar on her 5th birthday and the self-taught player's talent shone through as lead guitarist in several school bands. But it wasn't until high school that she started singing. ‘I realised that my passion for music was much stronger than others so I decided to go solo and enter some singer-songwriter competitions.’ She hasn’t looked back, winning musicianship awards and first places year after year. ‘I knew that music is what I wanted to do for a living.’ Sofia has just completed her first year studying commercial music at Massey University in Wellington. ‘I wanted to major in industry rather than practice as I saw more growth for learning in that area,’ she says. ‘This means I'll come out of my degree knowing how to manage myself as an artist.’ The new EP, Live Session at the Library, has just been released on all social media platforms, including Spotify. You can follow Sofia and see live footage on YouTube and her Facebook page @sofiamachraymusic. She will be performing at Yonder in Queenstown on 7 February.

arrowtown village association news The wheels on the bus go…
That’s right; they do go round and round. But does the Arrowtown community want the buses going round and round and round? We all love the Orbus service, which is providing a great and affordable service, although one aspect is raising discussion. Since the service was introduced just over a year ago by the Otago Regional Council, the AVA has received many comments asking why the route has to be a ‘double movement’ rather than what historically was a one way loop through the iconic character village that is Arrowtown. The double movement route means twice the number of Orbus buses passing through Arrowtown, and is causing some confusion, particularly for the museum area pick-up and drop-off point. The current system will shortly see the loss of 9 car park spaces on Ramshaw Lane and see funds spent on out-of-character bus stops and shelters on both sides of village streets. Also a roundabout will be placed on Adamson Drive to allow a bus turnaround. All of this infrastructure work is to be done by QLDC at Arrowtown ratepayer expense.
The AVA is collaborating with other Arrowtown organisations in an attempt to get a practical solution of a loop route reintroduced by the ORC. Such a loop would remove much of the infrastructure requirement, would use existing bus stops such as the museum shelter on Ramshaw Lane, and reduce the number of Orbus movements passing by our historic Buckingham Street area. We are canvassing our community once again for their opinions. What do you think? lake hayes show This year the Lake Hayes Show again benefited from excellent fantastic weather. Crowds packed out the grass for entertainers, Craig Smith and Wayne McEwan. 'The new shade sail proved very popular and was very well used by families,' say organiser Pip Norton. 'The face painting ladies were kept very busy all day as usual and the kids just loved the police tractor while the adults seemed to be reminiscing about "Lady Penelope" the 1954 Bedford bus from Triton.' Numbers were up on last year and back to 2017 levels. Pip wants to thank all the sponsors, funders and volunteers, especially the Arrowtown Scouts, Arrowtown Swim Club and the Lions. 'And of course all the locals who came out to support the show!'
