christmas tea In what's becoming a new tradition for Arrowtown, last Sunday around 100 over-70s gathered at the hall to celebrate Christmas with afternoon tea courtesy of the Queenstown Lions Club. Seniors came from all over the district to enjoy entertainment, dancing, catering by the ladies of Altrusa and, in a rare moment of quiet in the hall, a couple of rounds of bingo! MC Michael White says he's had lots of positive comments and they'll be back next year!
lake hayes a&p show The Lake Hayes A&P Show, sponsored by Arrowtown Lifestyle Retirement Village, is back in January. This year it’s all about keeping it local at the Wakatipu’s must-do family fun day. The old favourites will be there – entertainment for the kids, market and trade stalls, fashion in the field, all sorts of animals, and the traditional home industries competitions. This year the committee has added horse-shoeing demonstrations to the schedule. There are new classes throughout the show ground. For the lifestylers, there’s now ewe with lambs at foot, and the kids have school pony classes. After the Grand Parade there will be a mass gumboot throw and a tug of war. New categories abound in the pavilion too. The Blokes section wants your No. 8 wire skills and kids can build with Lego or create a healthy lunchbox. Read the schedule at lakehayesshow. com and get growing, making, preserving and baking – there are lots of great prizes. On the entertainment side, Wayne McEwan the Magic Guy will be there with his pets. And – warning to all Scottish grandmas – the Wonky Donkey man will be performing! Good news after last year’s scorcher, there will be a shade sail in front of the stage and hay bales to sit on too. The Lake Hayes Show is on Saturday 12 January 2019 from 9 am. Remarkables Experience buses will run all day from the Park and Ride in Alec Robins Road. Entry is $10 adults, children free.

councillor comment This update on Arrowtown goings-on from Arrowtown councillor Scott Stevens: It’s been a busy year in the Queenstown Lakes District Council world as our district continues to grow at a record rate. This puts all sorts of pressure on council services and it’s my job as your dedicated Arrowtown ward councillor to make sure our little village gets its fair share of the QLDC spending pie. I am pleased to see the improved Ramshaw Lane car park looking so good with the planting giving this important asset an Arrowtown look and feel. Our new water supply bores are almost ready to be commissioned with a larger reservoir planned for 2019. The enhancements along Wiltshire Street looks fantastic and my appreciation goes to the members of the Arrowtown Planning Advisory Group for their help in the design of this and other beautification projects around the Heritage Zone. Volunteers play a big part in our lives and we are very lucky to have such people working hard for the betterment of our village. The same appreciation goes out to the Arrowtown Village Association committee and Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association board. The Arrowtown Wilding Group has made huge strides in controlling wilding trees around Arrowtown in 2018. This subgroup of the Village Association released the Arrowtown Wilding Strategy earlier this year, and has overseen the felling of conifers over much of Tobins Face. Funding is now in place from Central Lakes Trust for the next round of ground and aerial control around German Hill. Over Christmas and New Year our numbers swell with holiday makers so there will be no let up for council workers and contractors. For those that do get some time off, enjoy and I look forward to serving your interests again in 2019. 4

These are cleaned, sorted and placed in small presentation packs for sale at the Post Office to passing tourists as a fundraiser for the building maintenance. The scheme has now been going for over 20 years, but stamps are becoming scarce as we all turn to electronics to survive. Once again on Thursday 27 December from 10 am the Post Office Market Day will take over the Library Green as throngs of locals and visitors make their way around more than 90 stalls selling local arts and crafts, food, plants and much more. The event is a fundraiser for the iconic post office, which was bought by the community from NZ Post in the 1990s to save it from closure. Funds raised go towards maintenance of the historic building. You can also support the PO by shopping there – and saving your used stamps (see opposite). please conserve water! QLDC tells us the recent hot weather is already putting pressure on our water reserves. To avoid water restrictions like last year's, they're asking us to conserve water now. You can help in several ways: • Water gardens by hand rather than setting a sprinkler. • Use a timer for your sprinkler and water your lawn for an hour between midnight and 6 am, when demand is low. • Check the arc of your sprinkler to make sure you’re watering the garden or lawn, not the path and driveway. • Wash dishes and clothes when you have a full load. • Take shorter showers. • Check for and fix leaks. If we all do our bit, we may be able to avoid restrictions this year! 9
your flop-free recipe lamb and edamame stir-fry ¼ cup soy sauce 2 Tbsp honey ⅓ cup mirin 1½ tsp sesame oil 1 Tbsp freshly grated ginger 3 spring onions, chopped 450 g lamb backstrap 360 g soba noodles 2 cups frozen shelled edamame beans 1 Tbsp sesame seeds 2 tsp vegetable or peanut oil vegetables of choice, chopped handful mint leaves Bring large saucepan of water to boil. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk soy sauce, honey, mirin and sesame oil. Pour half into large mixing bowl, add ginger and spring onions, stir and set aside. Slice lamb thinly and place into the bowl with the marinade, coating well. Set aside for 15 minutes to infuse. Cook noodles and edamame in boiling water for 4 minutes. Drain well, rinse and add to large mixing bowl with dressing. Toss well to combine. Meanwhile, heat wok (or frying pan) over medium heat. Dry toast sesame seeds for 2 minutes or until fragrant. Remove from pan and set aside. 10
Heat oil over high heat in same wok (or frying pan), place lamb into wok and cook 1 minute each side. Remove and set aside. Add chopped vegetables and stir-fry for 2 minutes so they are still crunchy. Pour in marinade leftover from lamb and cook a further 3 minutes on each side, basting regularly. Return lamb to the wok along with the noodles and edamame beans, tossing to combine. Serve in bowls and garnish with mint leaves and a sprinkling of sesame seeds. Serves 4 as a main meal or 2 and 2 lunches.
