arrowtowner stitches up opportunity Arrowtown’s Peni Moala is still coming down from the high of his Project Runway New Zealand experience. The Tonga-born designer, one of 14 finalists selected from 8000 applications for the fashion competition, made it to the top five but this week was eliminated. Filming started as soon as Peni got off the plane in March and continued for 6 weeks with only one day off a week. ‘On Runway Day we were out the door at 8 am and then home usually around 11 pm, but on TV it’s 15 to 20 minutes’ judging.’ Peni says that creating garments alongside his competitors created a great energy. ‘I guess when you have a room of people that all have a love for the same thing that’s just the nature of it.’ The contest had its highs and low. ‘I had moments of watching my garments come alive down the runway and I fell in love with them and then some I’d rather forget forever. With the pressure cooker of it all it’s not always easy! My vision sometimes didn’t go to plan and I had to think outside the square.’ Peni will be forever grateful for showcase the programme gave him. ‘It is an absolute dream for any up-and-coming designer.’ His personal highlight was having host Georgia Fowler wear – and love – a jacket he created. ‘I was the only designer whose garments she tried on all series!’ Peni isn't standing still after Project Runway. He has launched his fashion brand BENi (that's the way his name is actually pronounced!) with a summer print line for both men and women available at beni.co.nz, and is currently working on a 3 winter range!
arrowtown village association news The AVA held its Annual General Meeting last Thursday, thanks to those of you who attended. The existing committee all stood again, and we are pleased to also have 4 new members joining our enthusiastic committee to represent you, our community. The major news of the night was the AVA being confirmed as successful in its funding application to the Central Lakes Trust. We have been awarded a generous $600,000 to continue wilding control work on Tobins Face, so you can expect to hear the buzz of chainsaws again before long. This exciting initiative is all about getting the community involved. Shortly we may be asking community members throughout Arrowtown to host an air quality sensor. This trial will establish the feasibility of using such scanners over winter to record air quality both outside but also inside the home.

songs for christmas The Remarkable Vocals Choral Ensemble is marking the holiday season with Laudate, a concert at the Thomas L Brown Gallery this weekend. Directed by Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association coordinator Sue Patterson, the popular and versatile local group has prepared a varied selection of Christmas music and some special duets, along with solos from trombonist Luke Petre and pianist Kana Takahashi. ‘A highlight of the concert will be Mozart's dynamic “Laudate Pueri”,’ says Sue, ‘while two choral versions of Hoagy Carmichael’s “Stardust” and “Skylark” provide a moving jazz interlude in this mainly classical concert.’ Sue says audience feedback from the last 13 years reflects that Remarkable Vocals concerts are not just about the music, but are an experience in themselves. harvest your own christmas tree Karl Walker of Arrowtown Choppers is encouraging local families to get themselves a free Christmas tree – and help halt the spread of wilding pines – by cutting their own from the group’s control patch near the Sawpit Gully Loop. ‘Why not get the kids up there, pick your own tree, chop it down and take it home?’ he says. The Choppers work close to the Big Hill Track on Wednesdays from 6 pm to 9 pm. ‘If you need some help we’re happy to give you a hand during those hours,’ says Karl. ‘If you’re heading up any other time, simply find a conifer you like the look of and help yourself. Just remember it is your responsibility to be safe. You’ll have to bring your own tools and appropriate clothing and footwear. your flop-free recipe spice-rubbed salmon compote 400 g salmon fillet 2 Tbsp mixed spices (I used a mix of crushed coriander seeds, ground cumin, paprika, salt, oregano) salad
punnet cherry tomatoes, halved red onion, finely diced baby spinach or kale, leaves roughly torn red or green capsicum, chopped juice of lemon and a little olive oil to serve
oven-roasted potato wedges sour cream and salsa
Cut the salmon fillet into 4 pieces. Drizzle the skin side with a little oil and evenly sprinkle over your spice mixture. Toss salad ingredients together and drizzle over lemon juice and olive oil. Cook salmon skin side down in a hot frying pan for 3–4 minutes. Flip the fillets over and cook for 2 minutes. Serves 4.
