artists take up residence Lakes District Museum staff are looking forward to having some regular – and talented – company this summer as two artists from Tuscany become the museum’s first artists in residence. Luigi and Kate Agnelli have exhibited all over the world from Europe and Istanbul to Singapore and from the USA and Canada to Australia. This year the Italian/English husband-and-wife team will spend their summer creating their delicate and detailed work at the museum. They've already completed one piece for Arrowtown, which you can see on the cover. Special projects manager Jane Peasey says she’s looking forward to watching the work as it grows day by day. ‘It’s always wonderful to have artists on site during an exhibition. The artists enjoy the direct feedback and our visitors love being able to speak directly to the people who are in the process of creating works of art.’ Luigi and Kate have an unorthodox approach to making art: they work together on large pieces, sitting side-by-side. ‘I am fascinated to see how they manage to start drawing at either side of a large sheet of paper and end up with works that are balanced and that have correct proportions,’ says Jane. ‘A couple that live and work so closely together must have a very special relationship!’ The residency and exhibition will have an official opening on Friday 16 November at 6 pm, everyone is welcome for aperitivo (yes, wine and Italian-style snacks!). Head along to the museum to meet Luigi and Kate and learn about their unique method and see their creations. 1

volunteer groups rewarded The awards are flying in for Arrowtown’s community groups. The Arrowtown Scouts were finalists at last month’s Trustpower Community Awards in Alexandra, while Arrowtown Volunteer Fire Brigade came home with an award and a $1000 donation. Wakatipu Wildlife Trust, of which Predator Free Arrowtown is a member group, won the supreme award for Queenstown. And this week Arrowtown Choppers have been given the Judges’ Special Award by the New Zealand Plant Conservation Network in recognition of their outstanding efforts in combating wilding trees. Arrowtown Village Association chairperson Noel Beggs says, ‘On behalf of the community of Arrowtown, I’d like to acknowledge the work of our fantastic volunteer groups. Whether that be the groups that have won awards, or any of the other groups quietly working away to make our town the place we are all passionate about, they all deserve a big "well done”.'

arrowtown village association news arrow river tracks are for everyone
With so many people enjoying the Arrow River tracks on foot or by cycle, it has become a place of potential user conflict. The AVA has received enquiries wanting clarification on usage. So that we can all safely share these tracks, there are some simple steps that we can take: • All users of the tracks are encouraged to keep left or to move to the left to make room for others. • Cyclists please ring your bell (or at the least call out politely) to warn others of your approach. A bell is an affordable and practical method to signal your presence. • Walkers please move to the left when you hear the bell • Dogs are allowed off leash on the river tracks, but must be under voice control and you must carry a leash. Please keep them with you when passing other track users: being rushed by a dog, no matter how friendly, can be frightening for some – and bike vs dog collisions are only going to end in pain for both. The Arrowtown Millennium Trail, which loops both sides of the Arrow River and is part of the Queenstown Trail network, is one popular area we have received comments on. Cyclists are encouraged to use the east side
of the river but are welcome to use both and it is just one of the many multi-use trails in our beautiful area. Mark Williams, the CEO of Queenstown Trails Trust advises that they are currently undertaking a signage upgrade for this busiest section of their network, with the inclusion of some ‘caution’ and ‘trail courtesy’ signs. Let’s all get out there and share the delight in having these beautiful tracks, right here on our door-step. dried up and the wind died down on Saturday night in time for the Arrowtown Volunteer Fire Brigade fireworks. A big crowd turned out to enjoy a display that just kept on coming and the applause. Chief Fire Officer Murray Forward was in charge of lighting the fireworks and 51-year veteran Jim Shaw showed off the brigade's newest acquisition, a donated classic Fire Service Land-Rover. The brigade puts on the show every year to minimise individual household fireworks, to reduce the risk of personal injury and the amount of pet anxiety during the Guy Fawkes period. museum director tours battlefields The centenary of Armistice Day has brought renewed interest in the events of World War I and there’s a growing interest in visiting the sites of these events. There’s no better way to do this than in the company of an expert, and that’s why Lakes District Museum director David Clarke has decided to lead a tour to the Western Front next year. It’s important, says David, to take your time. ‘In 2016 I visited Ypres with my family for 3 days and we realised we needed to be there at least a week.’ David, in conjunction with Sacred Ground Tours, has put together an itinerary that starts in Arras, France, on 25 May 2019 and ends in Ypres, Belgium, on 1 June. Along the way, the group will visit sites of significance to New Zealanders – in particular to those who served from the Otago/ Southland region – including Le Quesnoy and the Menin Gate. ‘We are a small group of up to 20 travelling in nine-seater vehicles,’ says David. ‘We can adjust the itinerary to visit sites that are important to members of the group. a celebration of peace This Sunday 11 November is the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, in which at least 18 Arrowtowners died, and Arrowtown will be marking the occasion in a special way. First up is the RSA Armistice Day service at the cenotaph. At exactly 11 am there will be 2 minutes’ silence to remember those who were lost, and then all church bells will ring to celebrate the end of the war. The celebrations continue from 2.30 pm to 6 pm with a community picnic and concert at the Library Green. Come along, watch the Arrowtown School kapa haka roopu perform, and enjoy the Miners Band, Peter Doyle and the Queenstown Jazz Orchestra, the Crown Rangers and the Buckingham Belles. There will be free face painting from The Paint People and a barbecue supplied by the Thursday Club. Bring picnic food and something to sit on! Wet weather venue will be the Athenaeum Hall. your flop-free recipe toasted rosemary almonds Central Otago Regional Orchestra Conductor Ashley Hopkins
3 Tbsp coconut oil 2 cups raw almonds 4 sprigs rosemary, leaves removed, or 2 Tbsp dried rosemary 2 Tbsp honey or maple syrup 2 Tbsp paprika 1 tsp flaky sea salt freshly ground black pepper Preheat oven to 160°C. Line a baking tray with baking paper and set aside. Heat the coconut oil in a large pan over medium heat. When the oil is hot, add the nuts and rosemary and stir until the nuts are fully coated. Keep stirring for a couple of minutes, then reduce heat to low. Add honey, paprika and salt and pepper, and stir for another minute. Transfer nuts to a baking tray, spreading out in a single layer. Roast for 20 minutes and then enjoy! 10
