scott stevens on responsible camping On Thursday 25 October Council adopted the district's Responsible Camping Strategy. The naming of our strategy 'responsible camping' was very deliberate. There is no such thing as 'free camping' so why continue to use the term 'freedom camping'. In my role as a QLDC councillor I encounter the occasional area of extreme frustration and our inability to outright ban freeloaders who pass the cost of their stay on to you and me is a prime example. This new Responsible Camping Strategy empowers us to do all we can under the central government legislation. whitechapel reserve
Part of the short-term action plan is to establish several managed temporary responsible camping sites around the district. These are funded by the Tourism Infrastructure Fund. One is on the Whitechapel Reserve with a maximum of 20 fully self-contained campers permitted per night. I share the concerns of residents and river reserve users. In fact, I am extremely concerned and if it was my decision alone this site would not be included. I take a degree of comfort that the mayor and my fellow councillors share these concerns and have confidence council staff will monitor this site closely and it will be shut down if irresponsible camping affects other users or the environment. This is where you, the people of Arrowtown, come in. We need you to report any irresponsible camping activity in and around Arrowtown. That includes people overnighting in cars and campervans around the river reserve or elsewhere in Arrowtown and if you see people washing in the river or toileting in the bushes. quizzing for the school Sharpen your pencils, Arrowtown! Our local primary school is proud to be hosting a gala quiz night on Friday 9 November at 6.30 pm at the Athenaeum Hall. This event, packed with brain-tickling questions, brilliant prizes and even dancing to finish, takes the place of the bi-annual school fair, usually the school's major fundraiser. 'With the school building undergoing renovations and weather tightness remedial work,' says Euni Borrie, 'it was decided it would be a bit of a risk and not much fun for a fair if the school was a construction site with cut-up fields!' Organisers are promising an entertaining night with prizes to be won for best brains and lots of goodies in the auctions. Dig out your best Swanny - or your best sequins – and you might just win for best dressed in the night's theme 'Swanndri and Sparkles – When Gore Meets Glamour'. one for the history books A couple of weeks ago the Lakes District Museum celebrated its 70th birthday with a day of activities and crafts – and free museum entry for all. Despite the snowfall, hundreds of people poured through the doors. A last-minute decision to bring a gold-panning trough inside turned out well, and most prospectors found a few specks. The Victorian photo booth was always busy. Caitlyn Julian (junior) and Joe Baker (senior) and each went home with a $100 Prezzy Card for the colouring competition. 'The day was a huge success!' says special projects manager Jane Peasey. 'We even gained a few new members as local families realised that a $30 membership for a year is a bargain!' But the party's not over. The Odd One Out hunt is still going on and anyone who finds 10 out-of-place items in the museum could win a $75 museum bookshop voucher!

3 cups wholewheat flour 4 tsp baking soda ½ tsp salt ½ cup coconut oil, melted ¾ cup honey 250 ml kombucha of choice juice & zest of 1 lemon 2 Tbsp milk of choice Preheat the oven to 200°C Grease a muffin tin. In a large bowl mix together flour, baking soda and salt. Pour oil and honey over the dry mix. Add kombucha and milk and whisk until just combined. Pour the mixture evenly into the muffin tin and bake in the oven for 5 minutes. Reduce the oven to 180°C and cook for another 10 minutes or until a skewer comes clean. Remove from oven and allow to cool a little before serving. 10
