Larger than life Adam McGrath has always been a huge hit when he’s toured New Zealand with Arts On Tour, whether on his own or with The Eastern, the iconic country band that ‘roars like a punk band, that swings like a gospel band, that drinks like a country band’. A folk singer/songwriter ‘stationed wherever I land’, Adam is at home with bluegrass, blues, country and rock and roll as much as folk and is known for the intensity and passion of his performances. This time around he’s joined not by The Eastern, with whom he last played Arrowtown in 2013, but by a small but mighty rhythm section called the Roaring Days. Gig-goers on this tour have found themselves spellbound by his extraordinary musicianship, beautiful voice and his humour. ‘I can't remember the last time I cried with laughter at a music gig!’ says one audience member in Onewhero. Adam has been described by RNZ and the New Zealand Herald as a national treasure; Barry Saunders of the Warratahs sums him up simply as ‘the truth’. arrowtown village association news making a submission to council
The Arrowtown Village Association has occasionally made submissions on Arrowtown matters or proposals, where these proposals have caused widespread community discussion. We are privileged in recent times to be able to reference the communitydriven visioning document Shaping Our Future when composing such submissions. Although the committee is often asked to make submissions by individual community members, we have encourage individuals to make their own. Watch out for public notices posted on a property boundary advertising any proposed changes, a requirement for publicly notified resource consent applications. Whether in favour or opposed, it is important that people express their views. The AVA will endeavour to alert the community of relevant proposals via our Facebook page for larger proposals and/ or council consultations.

farmers market returns After a very successful first season last year, the Arrowtown Farmers Market is back, beginning again this Labour Weekend, Sunday 21 October. The market will run from 10 am to 2 pm on the Library Green every Sunday until Easter. Market coordinator Kylie Hampton says vendors have been signing up steadily for the last couple of months. ‘Of the number of stalls we’re allowed under our consent conditions, we’re pretty confident that we will have a full market most Sundays, if not every Sunday.' Behind the scenes, this traditional weekly farmers market is an incorporated society with a small committee of volunteers who dedicate a large amount of time to making it work. Committee chairperson Nigel Douglas says that with the support of the Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association, the Arrowtown Village Association and QLDC the market has exceeded all expectations. ’It really has been the result of the most massive of team efforts.’ He continues, ‘At the outset we determined that our core focus is the local community, not tourists. On top of offering fabulous fresh produce it also provides a regular gathering space for all ages, local community groups are supported with free stalls, and it makes practical use the our beautiful Library reserve.’ Come and enjoy a coffee, meet friends, listen to live music and enjoy some of the best produce our region has to offer! 5

the big shave ‘Hello, I'm Jed. I am 10. Four months ago my dad passed away from brain cancer.’ So begins the Facebook post for Jed Crawford’s big fundraiser. Jed’s dad was Keith Crawford, the popular publican of The Fork Tap who died in May. It would have been his 50th birthday in November and Jed wants to do something positive to celebrate. Jed with Dr Swee Tan Jed decided that positive thing would be to shave off all his hair and raise money for a good cause. Mum Jeannie says he did his own research to find just the right cause, and he chose the Gillies McIndoe Research Institute, which aims to find new ways to treat conditions like cancer without surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy.
This week Jeannie and Jed visited the Wellington research institute and its inspirational founder Swee Tan. ‘We had friends who rang up Dr Tan to tell him about Jed’s fundraiser and he invited us to come visit and see what he did,’ says Jeannie. ‘He spent an hour and a half showing us around his laboratories and did a slide show on what he's achieved so far. He said Kiwis are amazing people who look outside the square and are totally unafraid to try new things and make new discoveries.’ RELOCATING! going n-uke-lear The Arrowtown School Hall echoed to the sounds of ukuleles a couple of weeks ago as Auckland’s The Nukes Ukulele Trio stopped by on their tour of southern New Zealand. More than 20 locals, young and old, gathered together for the free workshop, where two members of the group taught a few chords and players learned how to play three simple tunes composed by The Nukes. Later that day, around a dozen of the participants took their chance to perform to an audience as they joined the trio at their packed gig at the New Orleans Hotel, strumming along to the pieces they had learned. One of them, teacher Kathleen Brentwood, says, ‘The guys were just great with the kids – I’d love to see them come back to the school sometime to share their skills!’

your flop-free recipe moist orange poppy seed cake
2 unpeeled oranges, roughly chopped 185 g butter, melted 3 eggs ½ cup orange juice ½ cup caster sugar 1½ cups self-raising flour 2 Tbsp poppy seeds orange slices for top orange sugar syrup for drizzling Preheat oven to 180°C. Grease and line an 18–20 cm cake tin. Purée oranges in a food processor. Add melted butter, eggs, orange juice and sugar and mix well. Add flour and poppy seeds and mix until combined. Bake for 45 minutes or until a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean. Turn out onto a cooling rack. When cool enough to handle, transfer to a plate. Arrange orange slices on top and drizzle warm syrup over. The cake will absorb the syrup and it will be deliciously moist and yummy. 10
