After several months of rehearsal, The Lion King Kids finally took to the Arrowtown School stage on Tuesday last week, after the unexpected snow on Monday caused the cancellation of the first performance. From then on, however, some very appreciative audiences came along and cheered on the young performers. Producer Kathleen Brentwood says she is grateful that the community gave generously of their time, expertise, skills and resources to make the ambitious production possible. ‘It has been a wonderful journey,’ she says. ‘We are so proud of all our Year 3 and 4 students who sang, danced, acted, produced amazing pieces of art and entertained us. Thank you, kids, you are all GOLD stars!’

new eatery opens Saffron may no longer grace Buckingham Street, but in its place comes Rosie B's. Director Dave Arnold says the restaurant is named after the legendary Rosetta 'Rosie' Buckingham, entertainer, hotelkeeper, and wife of Bully Hayes. It offers home style cooking with natural, organic and substainable ingredients. 'We source all our meats from local farms and some of our salad ingredients are foraged,' says Dave.
museum celebrates anniversary The Lakes District Museum is commemorating its 70-year journey from the billiards room of Ballarat Hotel to the old BNZ building with a raft of activities over the next couple of weeks. In the colouring competition, $100 Prezzy Cards are up for grabs for kids with a bit of artistic flair. You can download the outline from museumqueenstown.com or pick one up from the museum. Closing date is 10 October. The museum elves have been changing things up and the popular code-cracking treasure hunt has a new message to decipher. One naughty elf has been sneaking around leaving objects that don’t quite belong, like a Coke can in the brewery and a My Little Pony in the saddlery display. If you find 10 or more you’ll go in the draw for a prize on 12 October. On Thursday 11 October the museum will offer free walking tours of the historic heart of Arrowtown, where you can learn about the development of our little town. There will be two walks, leaving the museum at 10.30 am and 2 pm. The biggest party will be on Friday 12 October. Admission to the museum will be free and there will be plenty of activities to keep young and old entertained. Visitors can try gold panning, or get involved in making a rag mat and tukutuku, and other craft activities. The intimidating teacher Miss Grey will be making appearances in the school room, and kids will be able to find out how their ancestors would have entertained themselves with games like quoits and hopscotch. fighting fires in arrowtown Arrowtown Volunteer Fire Brigade recently marked a quartercentury of service by Lee-Roy Mullings with the presentation of his Gold Star medal at honours night. Lee-Roy, a jade carver, joined in his early 20s and has given up a good chunk of his free time to the brigade ever since. He has served as a senior station officer, and now that he has stepped back to senior firefighter he is eager to pass on his knowledge and experience to new volunteers. ‘This medal is hard-earned,’ says Chief Fire Officer Murray Forward. ‘Congratulations to both Lee-Roy and his wife Nicky. If it wasn’t for the partners, we wouldn’t be able to operate.’ On the same night Terry Youngman received a Long Service & Good Conduct medal following 14 years’ exemplary service. ‘Terry has really put in the hard yards and the medal is well deserved,’ says Murray. Victoria Tovey was announced as Firefighter of the Year for showing exceptional commitment to the brigade.

belles bloom in shanghai The Buckingham Belles have returned from an actionpacked trip to China full of excitement. Arrowtown’s famous dance troupe were invited by the Queenstown and Southern Lakes Pipe Band to take part alongside them in the Shanghai Tourism Festival. The entourage of 55 also included three highland dancers and a Christchurch kapa haka group, guest drummers and supporters. In Shanghai the Belles participated in practices, parades and shows that included acts from all over the world. ‘Our joint contribution was a great success,’ says Carolyn Crum. ‘The whole trip was an amazing experience and the Belles are very grateful to the pipe band for the opportunity. We loved working with them and look forward to dancing with them again soon. Look out for us all at next year’s Autumn Festival!’

your flop-free recipe chickpea chocolate muffins
1 can chickpeas, rinsed 3 large eggs ½ cup apple juice ⅓ cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1 tsp baking soda 2 tsp runny honey 3 Tbsp coconut oil, melted 1 tsp pure vanilla extract ⅓ cup dark chocolate, chopped into chunks Preheat oven to 250°C. Spray nonstick muffin pan and set aside. Place chickpeas, eggs, apple juice, cocoa, baking soda, honey, coconut oil and vanilla in a blender or food processor. Blend until smooth. Divide batter among 12 muffin cups. Top each cupcake with a sprinkle of chocolate chunks pushed gently into the mixture. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until skewer comes out clean. Makes 12 10
