daffodil day A bevy of volunteers co-ordinated by Margaret James have ensured another successful Daffodil Day street appeal in Arrowtown, raising just on $7000 for the Cancer Society, about $500 more than last year. The money will be used locally to help with things like travel for people dealing with cancer. Margaret would like to thank all the individuals and businesses who helped make the appeal a success.
The Arrowtown Choppers, the group of locals that spends Thursday evenings over summer dealing to the wilding trees up towards Sawpit Gully, need your help! Every pair of hands will make a difference at the Big Spring Chop this Sunday 16 September as volunteers head up the hill with loppers and saws to try to halt the spread of invasive conifers. It’s going to be a family affair, with an area (yellow on the map) that’s perfect for younger kids to pull up seedlings and chop small trees, and another area (orange) with more challenging slopes for adults and older children. As a thank-you to volunteers for their hard work, Wilding & Co. will produce a special blend of Sawpit Wilding essential oil. Big Spring Choppers just need to bring down a backpack of needle-rich douglas fir or larch branch and place it in the trailer by the Bush Creek entrance to Sawpit Gully. All registered choppers will get a 'Christmas tree in a bottle' ready to scent the home for the holiday season. The group will meet at 10 am at the Chinese Village, where there will also be a barbecue. You’re asked to bring tools if you have them, appropriate clothing and footwear, and extra food and drink. arrowtown village association news enjoy arrowtown’s trails
The Arrowtown Village Association is excited to be part of the Access Advisory Group, which manages the walking tracks behind Arrowtown. We recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding regarding the tracks in the Mahu Whenua Open Space Covenant area, a huge area protected in perpetuity by the generosity of the leaseholder Soho Property Ltd. The Access Advisory Group will work with the leaseholder to formalise existing tracks and develop new ones. The AVA’s role within the group is as a conduit to and from the community, and we invite your feedback on the trails. We may also make requests for volunteer work on minor trail maintenance as required. So, head out there and enjoy the trails and let us know your thoughts or concerns. want to talk to council?

long lunch returns The Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association has announced local eateries will once again set up shop on Buckingham Street for the Arrowtown Long Lunch on Friday 7 December 2018. After deciding last year to step back from the event he founded in 2011, Malcolm Blakey of QT Event Management donated the Long Lunch to the APBA, an offer that was willingly accepted. The APBA acknowledges the work of QT Event Management in running the lunch successfully for seven years. ‘The Long Lunch has become a pivotal event in our calendar year showcasing local produce in the beautiful setting of Arrowtown’s main street,’ says chairman Scott Julian. Multi Events Limited now manages the Long Lunch, which is sponsored by Chard Farm Winery and Cargo Brewery. The APBA says it will donate proceeds to a community cause, such as a local environmental project. Ticket sales open on 1 October 2018 at arrowtownlonglunch.co.nz.

museum turns seventy Celebrations of our local treasure house’s 70th birthday next month have already begun – for the kids at least – with a colouring competition. Lakes District Museum special projects manager Jane Peasey says the museum was established in 1948 in the old billiard room of the Ballarat Hotel. ‘In the late 1940s the population of Arrowtown was declining rapidly (it was under 200 at one stage!) and there was a concern that the stories, documents and artefacts that shaped our area would be lost forever if something wasn’t done quickly,’ says Jane. In 1955, when it became apparent that the premises too small, the BNZ donated its 1875 bank building, and that’s where the museum has been ever since. It is now recognised as one of the best small museums in New Zealand. ‘We welcome almost 50,000 visitors a year including 4500 school children from all over the country,’ says Jane. ‘We house over 20,000 photographs as well as thousands of documents and artefacts. get ready for the spring show With the Arrowtown Spring Show, a community event dating back nearly 100 years, at the Athenaeum Hall on Friday 28 September (1 pm to 5 pm), it’s time to start coddling your flowers, finishing off your handcrafts and working on your baking. The organising committee have released this year’s schedule, which includes sections for a number of classes of daffodils and other cut flowers, floral art, crafts from crochet to pottery, as well as baking and photography. A children’s section provides for entries produced both at home and at school or preschool. There will be a bridal fashion show and clothing sale in aid of CanShop, along with displays of children's artwork and stalls selling plants. And whatever you do, make sure you sit down for one of the famous Spring Show cream teas!
