theatrical treasure on stage One of Australia’s most popular plays will grace the Athenaeum stage soon thanks to Remarkable Theatre. Michael Gow’s award-winning Away, first performed in 1986, is a modern classic. It is the summer of 1967–68: the Vietnam War is raging, there is social upheaval and materialism is on the rise. Three very different families head for the coast to get ‘away’ and we see the internal conflict of family life against the struggle of a country shaping its future. Remarkable Theatre president Blaise Barham describes Away as dramatic, funny and uplifting. There are many Arrowtown connections in the cast and crew, including French couple Emna Ben Amara and David Relvas. Both are theatre professionals. Emna studied acting in Paris for three years and has acted in and directed professional productions; she met David, the production manager, when they were working together on a play. The pair, who have to make time for Remarkable Theatre around their 5-month-old daughter Angelina, had been thinking about moving away as it is so expensive to live here but they say the enjoyment they get from being part of the theatre company and the friends they have made through it mean that they are trying to make a go of it. Away is at the Athenaeum Hall on 12, 14, 15, 20, 21 and 22 September at 7.30 pm, with Versificator playing 60s hits live from 7 pm. property manager shines Sue Fussell has a busy life. She works hard leading the Arrowtown Property Management team and volunteers as a firefighter and medical first responder too. Yet somehow she still managed to find time to fill in a 40-page form, gather testimonials and make a video for her application for lthe Leading Property Managers Association NZ Industry Awards. All that work paid off for Sue, though, when she was announced as one of finalists for Property Manager of the Year 2018. ‘I am ecstatic,’ she says. ‘I never thought for a minute that I would be in the final four – the other finalists are property managers at very large companies.’ For Sue being a good property manager is about more than increasing income for the business. It’s about the people. Throughout her career, first as a hairdresser, then running a hospitality company and for the last decade as a property manager, she has been in front-line jobs. ‘I love working with people. I love the challenge of resolving issues,’ she says. ‘I believe I fight more “fires” in my property management role than I do as a volunteer firefighter – but I always find a way to successfully extinguish them!’ Arrowtown Garage Her greatest challenge is working in a small town, knowing she’s likely to run into tenants on the street. That’s why she invests time in building good relationships with them. ‘I really value the the tenants. If you get them on board, they’ll do anything for you.’ Next week Sue will head up to Auckland for the LPMA conference and on Saturday at the all your motoring needs in the Gala Awards she’ll find out if she’s heart of arrowtown coming home with a trophy. Spring is just around the corner, and the Wakatipu Reforestation Trust has four community planting days during September ready for your diary. The trust has 2200 native plants ready to go and they need your help getting them in the ground. No experience is required, and there are tasks for all abilities and ages, from those who just love digging holes to those who just don’t. Bring gloves, shovel, water and good footwear. All the planting days are Saturdays from 9 am to noon, and you can stay all morning or just drop in. 1 September: Lake Hayes South

lion king roars The sounds of the Pridelands have been echoing round Arrowtown School over the last couple of months as the Year 3 and 4 students prepare to bring Disney’s Lion King to life. The Lion King KIDS is 30-minute version of the Tim Rice and Elton John musical, with all the characters and songs you know and love. The children have been practising their lines and singing the songs with Showbiz Queenstown star – and teacher – Kathleen Brentwood, and an army of volunteers is building the set and designing the costumes. The show dates are September 17, 18, 19 and 20 starting at 7 pm in the school hall. Tickets (adult $15, child $5) will be available from the school office, or through the school website, next week. ‘Bring the family and share Simba's adventures!’ says Kathleen. ‘Hakuna Matata!’

salted almond nut butter protein balls
1 cup almond butter ½ cup vanilla protein powder ½ cup salted cashew nuts ¼ cup pitted dates 1 tsp ashwaganda powder 1 Tbsp matcha powder 3 Tbsp melted coconut oil dark chocolate, melted sea salt to sprinkle Whiz all the ingredients except chocolate and sea salt in a food processor until a dough forms. Roll into balls and put on a tray in the freezer. Melt the chocolate and dip the balls in to coat. Sprinkle a little salt over and return to the freezer to set. Makes 20. 10
