get crazy at the athenaeum
free yoga Arrowtown Hair Co, keen to do their bit to support the community where they make their home, is sponsoring free weekly yoga classes. Just turn up at the Arrowtown Community Rooms (next to the tennis courts on Centennial Ave) on Thursdays at 5 pm with a yoga mat for a class taught by Cathy Wallace and adapted for all levels. It's free and everyone is welcome.
Crazy is the sixth rock and roll theatre creation by Whirlwind Productions NZ, the outfit that brought us Rock and Roll Suicide and The Chain, as well as this year’s Autumn Festival hit La Nuit d’Extraordinaire). The show explores the story of Mirabelle, who finds herself unravelling after a series of negative life events. In the mental health inpatient unit at Invercargill she meets a collection of characters who unwittingly give her a better understanding of herself and her ability to cope. Crazy depicts Mirabelle's path in and out of the labyrinth we call madness, through the power of music. Writer/director Margaret O’Hanlon says the production has been a labour of love for the past two years. ‘My father suffered from schizophrenia and alcoholism his whole life, and I have watched friends struggle and cope with the seriousness of addiction and mental health,’ she says. ‘In an ironic sort of way the abstract mind and creative theatre are intertwined – a musical seemed obvious!’ At the head of the stellar cast of 19 is Arrowtown’s own Charlotte Graf as Mirabelle, while former Arrowtowner Martin Grounds plays a soldier with dementia. Another face familiar round here is Emma Pullar, the founder of History Alive, as the psych nurse. Margaret herself plays ‘Crazy Agnes’, while her daughter Violet Hirst tackles the self-harming Zoe. Featuring music from contemporary artists such as Gin Wigmore, Ryan Adams and Roy Orbison, Crazy deals with serious content, but the show has an uplifting message and is studded through with the kind of humour that is inevitable when faced with the ironies of life. Crazy is on 29 August to 1 September at the Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall at 8 pm. Tickets are $55, available from eventfinda.co.nz. 3
arrowtown village association news Predator Free Arrowtown was set up in April 2017 to remove rats, stoats, weasels, ferrets, possums and hedgehogs around Arrowtown and the surrounding hills. This will help bring back the native birds, lizards and invertebrates, in combination with weed removal and native replanting. pest-free valleys and hills
PFA started with an initial 10 traps, and has since expanded to more than 200. There are trapping lines up Bush Creek, Sawpit Gully, Brow Peak and along the Arrow River out to Whitechapel. The traps, which are pet friendly and do not use poison, are checked and rebaited by volunteers. Most of them have been sponsored by local businesses and individuals who have shown amazing support and generosity. This also includes the Akarua Autumn Festival Committee, which funded the Brow Peak line of traps. All funds are now handled through the Arrowtown Village Association. pest-free gardens
The group has received community funding from Predator Free New Zealand/Kiwibank to provide subsidised traps to Arrowtown households (limited to houses within town boundaries). Predator Free Arrowtown Urban have the first 50 traps to distribute, targeting rats and stoats (pet friendly, $10 each), and a small number of possum traps ($20). These will be available to collect from the hall at Arrowtown Primary School between 2.30 pm and 5.30 pm on Sunday 19 August. great term for school sports This term has proved to be a good one for Arrowtown School’s student athletes, with successes in Rippa, netball and figure skating. In Dunedin at the Otago Rippa Championships the Year 7 & 8 team finished 2nd in their grade after a fierce challenge. The Year 5 & 6 team did one better, coming home with the championship. This means the school’s Year 5 & 6 teams have won the last 8 years in a row. The teams supported each other enthusiastically, with the senior kids even storming the pitch after the junior team won their final. The school’s Vulcans netball team won the Year 7 grade at the Wakatipu Basin Tournament. The Arrowtown School Netball Club had an entertaining prizegiving for the 150 kids from Year 1 to 8 who played netball this year. Before the prizegiving the Year 8 Hercules team had a narrow loss to the parents/coaches and teachers, who were only slightly hampered by fancy dress. Despite a St John callout for a dislocated knee, players and spectators enjoyed the game! In individual sports, the ice skaters starred. A number of Arrowtown school pupils are Arrowtown Garage competitive figure skaters for the Queenstown Ice Skating Club. Mia Cotton had category wins in Dunedin, Gore and twice in Alexandra, and Georgia Chinn got three seconds and a third. Both will move up a grade next season. Over the weekend more than 100 figure skaters will compete in the South Island Figure Skating all your winter Championship, which is being motoring needs in the heart of arrowtown held in Queenstown for the first time. your flop-free recipe Moroccan Spiced Roasted Carrot Salad with Beef Medallions 1 pack Angus Prime Medallions salad 2 cups sliced carrots ½ cup natural almonds 1–2 Tbsp olive oil 4 Tbsp Moroccan seasoning 1 cup broccoli florets 1 cup button mushrooms, quartered 1 chorizo, sliced ¼ cup parsley, roughly torn 50 g feta, crumbled Preheat oven to 180°C. To make the salad, put carrots and almonds on an oven tray and drizzle with oil. Sprinkle Moroccan seasoning over and toss. Roast for 10 minutes before adding broccoli, mushrooms and chorizo. Roast for another 8 minutes. Transfer to a platter and toss the parsley and feta over. To make the yoghurt sauce, combine all the ingredients. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Heat a grill pan on high heat and cook the medallions for 3 minutes each side (medium rare) or until your liking. Allow to rest for 5 minutes then serve with salad and sauce. Serves 3–4. 10
