big year for arrowtown rugby
The Arrowtown Bulls have wrapped up the regular season in fine style, with the team’s name inscribed on the White Horse Cup, and the club still in the running for the championship. After a slightly wobbly start the Bulls came into their own later on, snatching the White Horse Cup off Cromwell in June and successfully defending it against Alexandra and Matakanui. They ended up in fourth place after the round robin games and will play Upper Clutha in the semifinal on Saturday. Things have been going well for the juniors too. ‘We started off with Emma Campbell signing on as our new administrator,’ says Amy Wilson-White. ‘Emma has done a marvellous job and we’re really grateful for her “nothing’s a problem” attitude.’ The Rippa and Under 8 grades had excellent results and in the Under 9 and Under 10 grades two teams were unbeaten for the season. ‘Our Year 7 and 8 players enjoyed some great successes too in the Open Grade,’ says Amy. ‘To those players leaving Arrowtown to head to high school we say kia kaha and all the very best for your future rugby endeavours.’ The first ever girls rugby competition Open Grade Basin Red team was a success. ‘We were overwhelmed by the huge number of girls and the quality of rugby,’ says Amy. The cherry on top for 2018 is the nearly completed new clubrooms in Jack Reid Park, opening the door for a new era at Arrowtown Rugby Club. And 2019 will see the Bulls playing in Arrowtown again and celebrations of the 30th anniversary of the Club being reformed. 3

Arrowtown Village Association has just launched its new website and rounded off a year-long campaign to better engage with the Arrowtown community. Everyone is now invited to take a look at the new website arrowtownvillage.nz for themselves. The new website, developed by Alison Dench Communications, went live on Thursday 12 July and is aimed at improving communication between residents and the AVA. The revamped website is packed with Arrowtown-specific information from contact details of community groups to advice on reducing pollution from your wood burner and the rules on trimming trees in the historic zone. The association’s embrace of technology goes beyond the website to the flourishing Arrowtown Village Association Facebook page, where followers have grown from 8 to well over 300. We share the very latest updates concerning Arrowtown here, occasionally being first with the news, such as the presence of E coli in Lake Hayes. The comments provide a useful way for residents to make their feelings on Arrowtown issues known, something the committee welcomes. In addition to the new website and Facebook page, free membership has been introduced and already the number of members has jumped from 132 to over 200. mums helping mums Don’t be fooled by the name, you don’t have to be a mum to get involved in this new Arrowtown community group, says organiser Rachel Brown. Dads and grandparents are welcome too! Rachel set up the Facebook group to connect parents in a small town where a lot of people don’t have family support because they have come from elsewhere. She is a recent arrival herself, having moved here late last year. ‘It took more than six months to assimilate into the community,’ she says, ‘and initially I felt a sense of isolation as there was nothing like this group at the time.’ Members of the group are able to offer and ask for meals, baking and other support, with a Pay It Forward philosophy. ‘If you need help please put your hand up!’ says Rachel. If a member knows of someone going Arrowtown Garage through a tough time who could really do with a precooked meal or baking they can nominate them by PM to one of the group’s admins.

30 years inspiring kids Jane Foster is celebrating a big milestone this year – 30 years in preschool education in Arrowtown. It all began in 1988 when Jane started teaching part-time at Playcentre.
