help wanted The Arrowtown Village Association delivers Meals On Wheels in Arrowtown and Frankton for two weeks every second month. The volunteers usually do one or two days delivering once or twice per year. Over the course of about an hour they pick up meals at the hospital and deliver them. Written by former Shortland Street star Elisabeth Easther, it won the 2014 Adam New Zealand play of the year award. Ewan Coleman of the Dominion Post described ‘moments of side splitting hilarity coupled with those of heart wrenching poignancy’ and the New Zealand Herald’s critic described it as ‘a sophisticated, witty and very contemporary meditation on the timeless processes of procreation.’ Seed is at the Athenaeum Hall on Thursday 19 July at 7.30 pm, tickets at eventfinda.co.nz. councillor comment This update on Arrowtown goings-on from Arrowtown councillor Scott Stevens: Before QLDC there was the Arrowtown Borough Council dating back into the 1800s. Since we amalgamated with Queenstown and Wanaka in the 1980s, Arrowtown representation on council has dwindled from three, down to two and now just one. Yours truly. We can’t keep up with the population growth of the wider Wakatipu or Upper Clutha, nor do we want to – our partners in QLDC are paving paradise and putting up houses faster than any district in New Zealand. Every six years the Local Electoral Act requires us to review council representation. And Arrowtown does not comply on numbers alone. How we do comply is by arguing our status as a special community of interest. On that basis and with the proposed inclusion of Millbrook Open every day and McDonnell Road into the from 8.30 am for Arrowtown Ward we will fight again to keep our dedicated local representation on council. But there are two sides to the argument and that is why QLDC is seeking your feedback. paella for a cause It started with a casual conversation – it ended with a donation to the fire brigade of over $14,000. When Dalefield mum Marion Botherway asked Todd Weeks what was involved in being a firefighter and medical first responder with Arrowtown Volunteer Fire Brigade, she was surprised by the answer. ‘I honestly had no idea how much time all the volunteers give to the brigade,’ she says. Then when she discovered that as a volunteer brigade they have to buy some of their equipment out of brigade funds, she decided to help – with a Paella Night fundraiser. ‘My first call was to La Rumbla as Sam Gruar and PJ Johnson are always enthusiastic supporters of the community. They provided the most fabulous paella.’ David Gent, Jessie Coutts and Mathurin Molgat organised the music and Noel Coutts, Shane Woolridge and Sam Maxwell all had a turn with the band. Akarua donated bubbly, the bowling club gave the venue, and Fan-Tan fed the workers. ‘It was a great night and so far we have raised $14,000 and hoping to get a little more,’ says Marion. ‘Half of the money is from ticket sales, the rest is predominantly from individuals offering to sponsor equipment, such as heatproof helmet torches, or a satellite phone which will be purchased with money donated by the Akarua Autumn Festival.’

birds flock to arrowtown Ben Teele has made his property a luxury haven for birds with feeders and predator traps. And his work has certainly paid off, with large numbers of tui, bellbirds, waxeyes and even a fantail visiting. His latest visitor is a kaka, which is very unusual for Arrowtown. The native parrot started hanging out near the golf course but it has now settled in at Arrow Junction with Ben. He suspects the lone bird has come from the head of the lake – ‘They can fly considerable distances,’ he says – and its time in Arrowtown may be limited. ‘There’s no shortage of food here, but the habitat is not quite right and he or she will need to find a significant other at some point!’ Birds are flourishing throughout Arrowtown, thanks to the work of Predator Free Arrowtown, which Ben heads, and the growing number of people doing supplemental feeding. You don’t even have to buy a feeder, says Ben. ‘If you have apples growing that you can’t use, Arrowtown Garage just leave them on the tree. Waxeyes and bellbirds love them!’ Ben has also spotted a number of karearea (falcons) hanging around, with one pair nesting up Bush Creek. Started Arrowtown School on Monday 2 July. Lukas was excited for his first day at school and feels like a big boy now. 250 g unsalted butter, chopped 200 g dark chocolate, chopped ⅓ cup rice flour, sifted ¼ tsp baking powder, sifted ⅓ cup cocoa, sifted 1 cup almond meal 1¾ cups brown sugar ⅓ cup hazelnuts, roughly chopped 4 eggs, lightly beaten 1 small cup espresso coffee icing sugar and cocoa for dusting Preheat oven to 180°C. Place the butter and chocolate in a small saucepan over low heat, stirring frequently until melted and smooth. Allow to cool slightly. Place rice flour, baking powder, cocoa, almond meal, brown 10

sugar, hazelnuts, eggs, coffee and chocolate mixture in a large bowl and mix to combine. Spoon into a lightly greased 20 cm x 30 cm cake tin lined with non-stick baking paper. Bake for 30–35 minutes or until the centre is just set. Allow to cool completely in the tin and refrigerate for at least an hour before cutting into squares. Dust with icing sugar and cocoa to serve. Makes about 20 You can also reheat and serve these warm with thick yoghurt and berries, so yummy!
