help early literacy Arrowtown School is looking for volunteers for its Early Birds before-school programme for Year 1 and 2 children who need a little bit of extra help with literacy. Some of the talented visual artists of the Arrowtown Creative Arts Society will show off their work at the society’s first ever Members Art Exhibition from 7 to 31 July at the Lakes District Museum Gallery. 'We have 15 visual art practitioners exhibiting painting, printmaking, photography and sculpture,' says organiser Susan Marshall. 'Some highlights are the sublime paintings of seasoned artist David John; a highly detailed realist portrait from Jane PestellLitten; tactile small bronze works from Fiona Garlick and the brilliant oils of Ben Ho.' New to the group are two overseas artists who did a residency last year in Arrowtown. 'The work of Indonesian artists Dedy Sufriadi and Indra Dodi was inspired by our Otago landscape and are both colourful and inspiring,' says Susan. This year’s major sponsor is Athol Gallery and the exhibition will be opened by New Zealand artist Grahame Sydney, who is best known for his landscapes of Central Otago. RD Petroleum is sponsoring the major award prize of $500 and a $250 framing voucher from Arrowtown Gallery, which will be presented at the opening at 6 pm on Friday 6 July. Established 18 months ago, ACAS has a membership of 110 and has been a strong public advocate for all forms of the creative arts. The membership consists of visual artists, photographers, actors, writers, singers, musicians, art aficionados, music lovers and collectors. ACAS provides cultural events during the year to support local practitioners and promote cultural activities that members and the greater community may participate in. arrowtown village association news If you’ve raised your eyes to Tobins Face lately, you’ll have seen there has been encouraging progress on the control work done under the auspices of the AVA’s Arrowtown Wilding Group. Starting at the Crown Range zigzags, contractors have completed felling wilding conifers to a little below the half way mark on Tobins Track. This is part of phase 1 of the Arrowtown Wilding Strategy which was discussed at two town meetings and is available on the AVA website. wilding tree clearance
The initial funding from the Ministry for Primary Industries has now run out, but the AWG is putting together applications to community funders including the Central Lakes Trust and the Community Trust of Southland to continue the wilding removal. If and when funding is approved, contractors will continue work on Tobins Face and pull the wilding spread back towards Arrowtown from Brow Peak/German Hill/ Sawpit Gully. We are getting advice and assistance from DOC

and the Wakatipu Wilding Conifer Control Group. The Arrowtown Choppers will continue to focus on sensitive areas around waterways, tracks and native bush. Funding allowing, we are hoping to start work again in spring this year, with the bulk of clearance behind the town done in 12 months. We can't afford to wait any longer. revegetation
Phase 2 will look at revegetation and weed control, and clearing out anything sprouting from seed already dispersed. We are optimistic that seed can be sown by drones and in more accessible places we will be planting a combination of natives for biodiversity and exotics for colour. Pest control will be needed to prevent goats and possums browsing, and Predator Free Arrowtown’s trap lines will be extended to keep stoats and rats suppressed and help bring back native wildlife. @arrowtownvillage on Facebook

sports facility reaches milestone
Construction of the $2.4-million Arrowtown Community Sports Facility in Jack Reid Park took a big step forward last week as the roof was completed. Site manager Brian Woods of Brosnan Construction says that, despite losing 9 or 10 days to poor weather recently, progress to the projected completion date of the end of August is good. ‘We are presently installing the windows and doors while the electrical and plumbing first fixes are ongoing concurrently,’ he says. ‘The next major step which will be visible to all is the external cladding, which will be started in the next week or so and will transform the appearance of the building.’ The centre will be 624 square metres in total with spaces for the rugby club, scouts, dancing and various social groups. The main rooms have moveable walls that can create three individual rooms or one large room depending on the needs at the time.

Arrowtown Preschool is again inviting the community to join in celebrating Matariki on the Arrowtown Library Green on Thursday 28 June, 5 pm to 7 pm. Matariki is the Māori name for the Pleiades, a cluster of stars that rises at this time of year and heralds the Māori New Year. It is celebrated with people coming together to remember their ancestors, share food, celebrate and sing, play music and tell stories. Preschool manager Jane Foster says, ‘Last year’s Matariki Night exceeded all expectations, but the organising team have made a few awesome changes they think will make it even better. There will be lots of lights, hot food, mulled wine, beer and hot chocolate, and s’mores to heat over braziers.’ Entertainment will include musicians Choice Music and Miki Brown, Flame Entertainment, the fairies from LUMA, Arrowtown School kapa haka group and, of course, the preschool and Arrowtown School junior class singing together. This event is a fundraiser for the community-run preschool and is sponsored by Ngai Tahu Tourism. Please note it will be cash only.

your flop-free recipe roast venison with parsnip purée & boysenberry sauce 1 pack Silver Fern Farms Venison Roast dried thyme, to season 2 Tbsp butter seasonal vegetables, steamed, to serve parsnip purée 5 medium parsnips, peeled and sliced 2 cups milk 1 clove garlic parsnips in a pot with milk, garlic 2 sprigs fresh thyme and thyme; season. Simmer until 1 cup cream parsnips are very soft. Drain 110 g butter milk, reserve. Place parsnips in boysenberry sauce a blender; add cream, butter and 2 Tbsp butter a little reserved milk. Blend until ½ onion, diced smooth. 1 cup red wine To make boysenberry sauce, ¼ cup red wine vinegar return frying pan to a low heat. 1 punnet fresh or frozen Add butter and sweat onion boysenberries until soft. Add wine, vinegar, ⅓ cup sugar boysenberries, sugar, orange 3 Tbsp fresh orange juice juice and thyme. Simmer 10 to 15 2 sprigs fresh thyme minutes until reduced by twoPreheat oven to 220°C. thirds.
