walking the talk Two Arrowtown women are tackling a challenging walk to raise funds to restore sight. Kaye Adamson and Janey Winders are joining Brisbane-based Aparima College school friends Jill Hooper and Mandy Trempus at the Sunshine Coastrek walk in Queensland on 27 July. Along the way the Southern Soul Sisters team are raising money for the Fred Hollows Foundation. Serious walking is new to all of them. ‘We have all had our time at running a while back but probably have let our fitness slip and needed a bit of a focus,’ says Janey. The foursome have been in training for the 60 km for months, giving each other each other encouragement on Facebook. ‘Believe me there are days when we really need it.’ Kaye and Janey aim for a 20 to 30 km walk once a week, with short walks between. ‘Summer was easy,’ says Janey, ‘but now we have to wear head torch, beanie and thermals.’ In the Sunshine Coastrek walkers have 18 hours to cover 60 km, but the Southern Soul Sisters are aiming to do it in just over 10. It’s a big ask but they’re hoping spending time with old friends will help them through. ‘We have a lot to catch up on in the 8 years since we were last together. Happy things and sad things...babies born, kids going through teenage years – that will take a lot of time – kids off to uni,’ says Janey. They also have the playlists of their youth from the 80s and 90s and are threatening to break into a bit of disco dancing along the way. The team are aiming to raise at least $500 each for the Fred Hollows Foundation. To donate, go to sunshine.coastrek.com.au and search for Southern Soul Sisters. councillor comment This update on Arrowtown goings-on from Arrowtown councillor Scott Stevens: new toilets You may have noticed the new toilet block on Ramshaw Lane. As with every building project undertaken in the Arrowtown Historic Management Zone, the design was carefully considered by council with the help of the Arrowtown Planning Advisory Group. My thanks go out to this group of local volunteers who give up their time for the betterment of the village, with the proof of success Arrowtown’s recently bestowed Landmark status from the Ministry of Heritage and Culture. The toilets will be operational as soon as the electricity can be switched on, with tree and climbing rose planting to follow. With tourism numbers exploding in recent years, QLDC had to invest in this toilet block and the Ramshaw Lane car park improvement to keep up with demand. change to speed limit Another by-product of Arrowtown’s popularity is increased vehicle traffic. Our narrow gold-rush era streets with unformed footpaths were never designed to be shared by 3000 residents and hundreds of thousands of visitors. Hence the introduction of a temporary 40 km/h speed limit. Council is reviewing our Speed Limits Bylaw and the temporary limit allows us to test the proposed change. Travelling at 40 km/h from one side of town to the other takes 30 seconds longer than it does at 50 km/h. A small price to pay? Or too slow for busy residents? The changes to the New Orleans Hotel promised by owners Kerry and Rob Andrews and Paul Lomax are taking shape. The first to be transformed is the old Mickey Finn’s, under new manager Adrienne Agnew (above). Kerry says in its new incarnation, The Goldminer, the downstairs bar will be a pizzeria/ café during day, focusing on quality coffees, takeaway salads, muffins, homemade pies and sandwiches as well as pizzas, dine in or take away. ‘It’s ideal for quick and easy lunch breaks,’ says Kerry. The Goldminer is also on the sustainability train, stocking reusable Cuppacoffeecups for $19 – and you get your first coffee free. In the evening, Kerry says, The Goldminer becomes a pizzeria/ bar with occasional live music. ‘It will be very different from Mickey Finn’s. But there will be occasional darts nights and pool players will be delighted hear that the pool table will stay!’ Renovations will begin soon. 7

belles off to china The Buckingham Belles are heading overseas for the first time on a trip to participate in the Shanghai Tourism Festival. Carolyn Crum, a 22-year veteran of the Arrowtown dance troupe says the Belles are excited to have been invited to join the Queenstown and Southern Lakes Highland Pipe Band at the festival in September. 'It's a fantastic opportunity to do something wee bit different,' says Carolyn. 'We're going to bring colour, lots of smiles and a bit of Arrowtown to another place.' Carolyn, who is a highland dancer herself from way back, says there's a lot more to the Belles than the can-can and they will be ready to adapt to working with a pipe band. 'We already have a jig in our repertoire but we'll be brushing up on more jigs so we can collaborate well with them.' The Belles and the Pipe Band will be in China for about 10 days and have activities planned for when they're not involved in the festival parade and other events, including trips to Beijing and to Shanghai Disneyland. 9
your flop-free recipe indian spiced cauliflower soup
2 Tbsp olive oil 1 onion, chopped 2 Tbsp cumin seeds 2 Tbsp coriander seeds 1 Tbsp freshly grated ginger 1 tsp ground turmeric 4 cups chicken stock 4 garlic cloves, sliced 4 medium potatoes, cubed 1 head of cauliflower, chopped into florets cumin seeds and fresh herbs to garnish garlic toast to serve Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan and sautĂŠ the onion. Add the spices and toast until fragrant. Stir in the chicken stock, add the garlic, potatoes and cauliflower and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes or until soft. Allow to cool. Blend in the pot using a stick blender.
