keith crawford On Monday about 1000 people attended the funeral of Keith Crawford, the publican of the Fork & Tap, who died last week at the age of 49. Keith grew up in the small farming community of Mangamuka in the Far North. While Keith was shy as a youngster his abilities to lead were identified by his school and he was appointed head boy in his final year. Keith moved to Dunedin and studied physiotherapy at Otago University. ‘As a physiotherapist his colleagues always considered that Keith was special,’ says Andrew Davis, ‘and that he had healing hands.’ He loved the outdoors and also spent time in Europe working as an alpine guide. That passion for the outdoors was shared with his wife Jeannie and children Zoe and Jed, spending time tramping, skiing and mountain biking throughout Central Otago and Canada. Andrew says Keith’s love for the outdoors was surpassed only by love for family. He was an incredibly proud father and his love for life, and others, will live on through his children. ‘Keith always considered one of his greatest achievements was to woo the lovely Jeannie Hamilton,’ says Andrew. Together they created the thriving hub of the community that the Fork & Tap has become, a place where they developed a strong team and built a reputation for quintessential Central Otago hospitality. Despite his 13-year battle with cancer, Keith always found time to help other people. ‘He never asked, why me?,’ Jeannie explains. ‘His passion was health and fitness. His passion was the mountains. He saw his cancer as a gift that helped him see life more clearly.’ Keith’s death is a profound loss to the community. 3

It could also feel quite heavy with moisture retained. • Loading the firebox: Use plenty of paper and kindling but leave space at the top of the fuel load to allow flames to develop and burn off the gases released. • Turning down your burner: Before using the low burn setting on your wood burner always ensure that the fire has been on the high setting for long enough for it to reach full temperature. This could take 15 to 20 minutes. firefighters step up Seven members of Arrowtown Volunteer Fire Brigade have returned tired but proud from the Auckland City Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge. On Saturday Chris Tate, Victoria Tovey, Todd Weeks, Steve Richens, Terry Youngman and Shawn Coombe, with an injured Sue Fussell as support crew, raced up the tallest building in the southern hemisphere with up to 25 kg on their backs to raise funds for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer NZ. Victoria gave us a blow-by-blow account of the experience: On race day we muster, get gear checked, collect breathing apparatus. Ridiculously hot standing still in our gear waiting – so tension and nerves are stretched – at the end of the day – it’s one foot in front of the other – let’s break it down – that’s all we have to do! Easy! Ha! Go time, one firefighter every 30 seconds, it’s a well-oiled machine and organisation is incredible. Once on the stairwell it’s immediately gruelling, people struggling from way down the tower but obviously determined more than most to get to the top! Medics and water stations positioned throughout the tower...optional water down our backs, words of encouragement and then at the 47th floor audible applause and cheering picks us up and we give it all we’ve got left! Medic teams at the finish line – incredible! One of the most gruelling, mind over matter exercises I have ever done and yet I will compete again next year. We all finished, exhausted but elated that we had completed our task, smashed our fundraising targets – and proud of our achievements. 7
from crisis to opportunity When Arrowtown retiree Wayne Hulls nearly died, a box of chocolates just wasn’t going to cut it to thank the people who saved his life. In Dunedin Hospital for routine heart surgery last year, Wayne suffered a very rare and often fatal complication. His family were called to the hospital with the news he could be close to death, and a nurse asked wife Pam to pray for him. But then the hospital’s crack cardiac team swung into action, and an expertly performed surgery brought him back from the brink. Grateful, Wayne looked for a way to properly thank them and decided to donate a life-saving automated external defibrillator for Arrowtown. ‘I just want to give someone a chance of getting as far as Dunedin to benefit from the work of the cardiac team.’ Wayne researched the best AED for Arrowtown, and discovered something that neither St John nor the New Zealand distributors realised: they need to be kept at above freezing temperature. That’s why the AED Wayne has installed outside the Arrowtown Bakery is in a heated cabinet. ‘Ros Maxwell and Arrowtown Bakery have been great,’ Wayne says. ‘She offered us the space on the wall and is paying for the electricity for the heater.’ Wayne is hoping to get together with Arrowtown Garage others to raise money for further well signposted AEDs that are available 24 hours a day. ‘I’d like Arrowtown to be known as a place where we look after people. I’m just happy to have been able to do something.’ The new AED joins the one outside the post office (now in a heated cabinet too) as the two 24/7 AEDs in Arrowtown. There are also AEDs at the medical centre, the bowling club, the golf club, two at Millbrook and the all your winter Four Square. The fire brigade also motoring needs in the carry AEDs and they will be turned out heart of arrowtown to any cardiac arrest, but they will take Phone 03 442 0807 a few minutes to get there. www.arrowtowngarage.nz

your flop-free recipe roasted duck salad
150 g baby beetroot 250 g baby potatoes 250 g duck breasts 1 tsp allspice couple of handfuls rocket 1 zucchini 1 nashi pear 90 g chopped walnuts 2 tsp red wine vinegar 2 tsp olive oil 50 g balsamic jus mixed with 1 Tbsp beetroot relish and 1 Tbsp water 50 g feta cheese and some fresh herbs Preheat the oven to 200°C. Cut the beetroot into quarters and the potatoes into wedges. Place them on a tray and season with salt and pepper, drizzle over some olive oil and roast for 25 minutes. Score the duck skin. Season the duck on the flesh side and rub in the allspice. Heat a little oil in the pan and cook skin side down for 5 minutes, turn and cook the other side for another minute. When the vegetables have 5 minutes remaining, add the duck to the tray and roast for 5 minutes. stand for 5 minutes. To make the salad toss the duck and the remaining ingredients together. 10
