new speed limit Queenstown Lakes District Council is reducing the speed limit in response to safety concerns. Over the next two weeks a temporary reduction to a 40 km/h speed limit will be introduced across all of Arrowtown. The speed limit on Lower Shotover Road in Dalefield will also be reduced, to 70 km/h.

flippin’ out Arrowtown's Charlie Stanley (13) has bounced, spun and flipped his way to freestyle trampoline success – and the GTGames in San Diego in late June. It was a triumph of Finalists and Greg from left: Jamie Greg Roe, passion and persistence Shaw, Charlie Stanley, Alex Minhinnick, Jacob Gjaja to get there. Charlie, who has been honing his skills at SITE Trampoline for 18 months or so, took a punt and contacted his trampoline hero, Greg Roe, on Instagram and invited the Canadian social media star to come to Queenstown to coach the locals and run a T.R.A.M.P Champ competition. Greg took the bait, and it was well worth the effort for Charlie, who beat out more than fifteen 9- to 18-year-olds to win the competition – despite battling a sprained ankle. With the win came an invitation to take part in Greg’s GTGames, a backyard trampoline competition, and $1700 towards travel expenses. Charlie’s mum Bec is delighted at his success. ‘It’s a fantastic achievement for Charlie,’ she says. ‘On one hand, we can hardly watch because of the difficulty of some of the moves he had to do. But on the other, we loved seeing him perform so well in something he’s so passionate about!’ Charlie is grateful to his coaches at SITE and the other competitors. ‘And massive thanks to Greg Roe for making this all possible…I can’t wait to meet all my heroes that started me trampolining.’ But first he needs to raise some more money to get him there, starting with a raffle with prizes from La Rumbla, Dorothy Browns, A. J. Hackett Bungy, Whitestone Cheese, Botswana Butchery, White and Wong and the Fork and Tap. Charlie will be selling tickets outside the Four Square on Monday, Tuesday and Saturdays from 4.40–6 pm. 3
kokako’s song Hot off a tour of Southland with the Arts Festival, a magical puppet show with original live music is on its way. Kokako’s Song is a little show with a big heart, suitable for children aged 3 to 8. Children will learn a waiata and join in the fun as 6-year-old Angel gets lost in the forest and overcomes her shyness by meeting a kiwi, two cheeky fantails, a giant snail, a puri moth, and a kokako. A Theatreview critic and his 8-year-old companion certainly enjoyed the show. ‘Delicious really. The children love it all…While everyone laughs and joins in wholeheartedly – the message comes across loud and clear: our creatures of the bush, many of them endangered, are special, unique, and need to be cherished.’ Kokako’s Song is at the Lake Hayes Pavilion on Sunday 20 May at 11 am and 2 pm. autumn festival wrap-up Coordinator Carole Watts reports the Akarua Arrowtown Autumn Festival was a huge success both in terms of numbers and weather. ‘We were blown away by how many events sold out this year,’ she says. ‘The Pie, Pint and Pinot sold out two weeks before the event and all door sales were snatched up very quickly also.’ She says the outdoor movie drew 200 people. ‘The weather held off and people brought warm clothes and blankets, it was a really fun night.’ La Nuit d'Extraordinaire also sold out and the committee have received many positive comments about it. The NZ Youth Choir concert, another sell-out, was spine-tingling and mesmerising, she says. The 50-strong choir sang not only at the concert but also the senior citizens afternoon tea and the Anzac Day service. ‘We always learn from each festival and 2018 is no exception – we have taken away ideas and tips for next year,’ says Carole.

stomped! The talent on show at this year’s skatepark Stompdown was some of the best in the district, says organiser Kim Anderson. The day started with Joe Baker (team rider for Static) on his scooter, in the rain, throwing down a back flip and a triple whip in the warm-up. On the pump track the future looks bright with three lil shredder girls on their run bikes setting the tone. Josh Bonnar recorded the fastest laps of the day with Olivia Hein close behind for the girls. Malik Boatwright won the boys’ under-9 bike with a run of great flow and difficulty and Josh Bonnar won with style and amplitude in the 10+ category. The rain deterred many skaters and for the most part it was the girls who stepped up. Georgia Chin (Refurb Skate rider) took the win easily with great use of the park followed by Jasper Thomas with a high level of difficulty, then Olivia Hein close behind. After the event donations were made to the Arrowtown fire brigade and Refurb Skate’s Iraq project. 9
your flop-free recipe celery soup
2 Tbsp olive oil 300g celery, sliced, strings removed 1 garlic clove, peeled 200g potatoes, peeled & diced 500ml vegetable stock 100ml milk Heat oil in a large saucepan, tip in the celery, garlic and potatoes. Add a splash of water and a big pinch of salt and cook, stirring for 15 mins. Pour in stock and bring to the boil, then simmer for 20 minutes, until the potatoes and celery are soft. Use a stick blender to purée the soup, then pour in the milk. Season to taste. Serve with crusty bread.
