feehly hill goes native Arrowtown’s little hill will be a bit greener after a huge volunteer effort on Saturday. Jo Smith of Wakatipu Reforestation Trust says that 61 volunteers planted 750 native trees and shrubs, including totara, kowhai, coprosma and olearia. ‘Volunteers mean everything to us,’ says Jo, ‘and it was great to see such a diverse crowd from all age groups, including the Scouts.’ The reclamation of Feehly Hill from weeds and exotic scrub is a long-term project that has been going for the best part of a decade and will continue for some time yet. The next community planting days will be in spring.

waterfall park development Change is in the air at Waterfall Park, where local developers Winton have applied for resource consent for a big new development. Having failed in 2016 to get approval for a special housing area there, the team behind Bridesdale Farm, Hanley Farm and Lake’s Edge are now looking to transform the beauty spot with visitor accommodation, restaurants, a day spa and wellness retreat, and event spaces. Images released by Winton show a string of four-storey building in the valley beside the creek and a small open-air chapel by the waterfall, as well as two-storey buildings and the old farmhouse. The buildings would be hidden from the main road. Waterways, flora and fauna are also earmarked for restoration with improved access for the public. According to a media release, ‘at the heart of the development will be the protection and restoration of the character and history rich heritage site’. A cluster of original stone farm buildings will be refurbished to provide a ‘unique dining experience’ as well as a cycle rental facility. Oliver Leighs, general manager of Winton, says, ‘We are committed to not only helping fulfil the demands on the accommodation, meeting and events sectors in the area, but also the heritage and environmental wellbeing of Waterfall Park – especially the ecologically important Mill Creek. We have been working hard to ensure that improvements are made to water quality and to protect and provide a habitat for our fish species and aquatic communities to thrive.’

arrowtown village association news The Arrowtown Village Association has recently been selected by the Shaping Our Future committee to become guardians of the final Shaping Our Future Arrowtown Community Visioning report. This document, which was compiled with extensive Arrowtown community input, is a great blueprint for our village and we are excited to have been offered this role. It allows us to make recommendations to decision makers in a structured, community-driven way. We will refer to the document often as we consult and inform you, our community, on matters of interest.

film society booming Coming off a hugely successful 2017 season, with more members than ever before, Queenstown Film Society has launched its 2018 programme and it’s looking like another vintage year. The community group for film fans will be showing 20 exceptional films on Tuesday evenings over winter at Dorothy Browns. Society president Alison Dench says, ’This year’s programme has real variety. There’s recent world cinema, classic comedies and dramas, and absorbing documentaries. It’s a perfect mix of entertaining and challenging!’ A drawcard for cinephiles will be a rare chance to see the ground-
breaking 1988 anime Akira on the big screen. Other highlights include acclaimed British drama The Selfish Giant, Oscar-nominated Turkish family drama Mustang, and two very different films from the 1940s starring triple-threat Rita Hayworth – the film noir Gilda and the musical Cover Girl. Opening night, at Dorothy Browns at 8.15 pm on Tuesday 1 May, will be Alex Garland’s sci-fi thriller Ex Machina. trolley help needed Anton Schmitz, coordinator of the Arrowtown Trolley Derby, is stepping down after three years organising the popular November event. The derby is the principal fundraiser for Arrowtown Preschool, raising between $8000 and $10,000 each year. Anton says that with both of his children at school now, it’s time to concentrate on other things. ‘It’s a great role which gets you out meeting local businesses and personalities. your flop-free recipe anzac biscuits
¾ cup flour ⅔ cup sugar 1¼ cups rolled oats 1¼ cups desiccated coconut 100 g butter, cubed 3 Tbsp golden syrup 2 Tbsp boiling water ½ tsp baking soda Preheat oven to 180ºC and line 2 trays with baking paper. Combine flour, sugar, oats and coconut in a bowl. Put the butter and golden syrup into a small pot over a medium heat until the butter melts. Mix boiling water and baking soda together in a small jug and add to the pot. Pour the melted butter mixture into the dry ingredients and mix well. Roll into golfball sized balls and place on the baking trays ensuring there is space for them to spread. Press gently to flatten. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on the trays for a few minutes before removing them to a wire rack to cool completely. Have a sneaky one while it's still warm as they are delicious and a little chewy. Makes about 24 10
