cycle track delays Wilding control work is under way on the Arrowtown faces, starting from Whitechapel and working towards Arrowtown. Contractors will be felling tree within two tree lengths of a section of the Arrow River Bridges Trail up towards Whitechapel from the 4th till the 12th April (week days only). They will have stop-go controls on the trail while they are working in this area and there may be slight delays for people using the trail.
planning for the next ten years Elected members and staff at Queenstown Lakes District Council have spent the last nine months thinking about how to get our district where we want it to be in a decade’s time. Now it’s over to you to share your views by submitting on the draft plan. The Ten Year Plan sets the Council’s work programme for the years to come. It is a bold plan, as it needs to be to grapple with the significant growth challenges we face. ‘The peak day population in 2028 is forecast to be almost 150,000,’ says Mayor Jim Boult. ‘The ratio of residents to international visitors in our district is 1 to 34, the ratio in Auckland is 1 to 1.’ Tourism is very important to our economy, but the Council aims to strike a delicate balance between meeting the expectations of residents and of those who visit. The draft plan proposes a work programme almost three times the size of anything the Council has delivered before, coming in at close to a billion dollars of capital investment over the next decade. Arrowtown is set to benefit in a range of ways. Funding is provided to upgrade the Arrowtown Pool and ensure the rugby facility is completed. There’s also funding proposed to upgrade the infrastructure supplying water to Arrowtown and much more. By now you should have received a summary of the draft Ten Year Plan in your letterbox. love, gin and the pox Following the delicate sold-out successes of her show Promise and Promiscuity, Penny Ashton has swapped Jane Austen for Charles Dickens and will bring her heroine Olive Copperbottom and a squalid gaggle of hilarious Victorians to crusty life at the Athenaeum Hall. Will Olive find a family among the brothels, toffs and gruel? Or will Mrs Sourtart break her heart as well as her teeth? This rollicking romantic musical is Oliver! meets Blackadder with a saucy feminine twist. The show has already wowed audiences in Canada, where critics described Penny as ‘a one-woman-show wonder’ and her performance as a ‘remarkable display of ingenuity and virtuosity’. Olive Copperbottom will be at the Athenaeum Hall on Thursday 12 April at 7.30 pm. Tickets are $25 from Eventfinda or buy at the door.

kids go green On Tuesday Arrowtown School became the latest stop-off for globe-trotting environmental advocate Libby Bowles. The English scientist and teacher is riding her home-made bamboo bike around the world, spreading the word about how single-use plastic is damaging the environment. Libby has got together with Esther Whitehead from Sustainable Queenstown to bring our local schools into the wider sustainable community. 'Children have so much more power than they realise and people pay more attention to what children are doing than adults, so they are the perfect ambassadors of change,' says Libby. 'So many of the plastic problems can be solved with really small habitual behavioural changes and adults learn from seeing kids leading by example.’ 8

3 Tbsp butter 4 cups miniature marshmallows 6 cups Rice Krispies ½ cup coconut tinted with green food colouring In large saucepan melt butter, add marshmallows and stir until melted. Remove from heat. Add cereal and stir until well coated. Shape warm mixture into 16 muffinpan cups coated with cooking spray. Allow to cool. Line cooled nests with coloured coconut and fill with easter eggs. Best if served the same day.
