get involved in autumn festival The Akarua Arrowtown Autumn Festival (19–25 April) began as a small festival in 1985 with huge community participation. Since then it has grown into an enormous event spread over five days and more than 12,000 people attend the market and parade day alone. Of course that requires a lot of work. The volunteer organising committee would love to see the festival remain a community-run event rather than be commercially owned, but to do that they need help. ‘It doesn’t have to be a huge time commitment,’ says committee secretary Jane Peasey. ‘It can be an hour to set out chairs for a lunchtime concert or serving cups of tea and glasses of sherry at the senior citizens’ afternoon tea.’ The festival is also looking for people to join the committee. ‘We need people who are “do-ers”,’ says Jane, ‘It is a fabulous committee with great people and we have a lot of fun in the planning stages as well as during the festival.’ If you’d like to help keep the festival local, you can contact co-ordinator Carole Watts at info@ arrowtownautumnfestival.co.nz. The festival is also looking for your participation in other ways, so think about entering the photography competition, putting together a float for the parade, entering the talent contest, taking part in an art workshop or putting a team in for the quiz night or the bowls tournament. saving the planet, saving lives The Four Square is becoming a hub for sustainability. Things kicked off last year with the arrival of volunteer-sewn reusable Boomerang Bags, designed to reduce the use of single-use bags – you pick one up from outside the shop for your shopping and return it next time you are passing. Mayor Jim Boult with Ricky Peyroux Next up came soft plastic recycling, allowing from Smart Environmental Arrowtowners to recycle things like bread bags. And finally just last week a glass recycling bin was installed next to the shop so residents can recycle glass bottles and jars – currently any glass you put in general recycling goes into landfill. The Four Square also recently installed inside the shop an Automated External Defibrillator that could save a life in case of cardiac arrest. This brings the total number of publicly available AEDs in Arrowtown to five – there are others at the golf club, the bowling club, outside the post office (24 hours) and at the medical centre. There are two at Millbrook and the fire brigade carries them as well.

Do you have a pet rabbit? Do you know about RHDV1-K5? In an effort to control the wild rabbit population, Otago Regional Council is planning to release the K5 rabbit virus at the end of this month. The location of release sites is being kept quiet, but with over 100 on the list it is likely there are some near Arrowtown. It is hoped that the virus will reduce numbers by over 40%. ORC’s Scott Maclean says, ‘Once released, it should start to take effect within a couple of days, and we could see a reduction in rabbit numbers within the next month or two.’ The NZ Veterinary Association says the virus is deadly to pet rabbits, but as long as a rabbit’s vaccinations are up-to-date it should be protected. According to ORC, in Australia, where the K5 virus was released last year, there have been no recorded deaths of pet rabbits that were vaccinated. ‘The virus is a variant of a strain that’s already in New Zealand, so nothing changes,’ says Scott. ‘It only affects the European rabbit, so people don’t need to worry about other animals getting infected with it. Even if a hunting dog eats a dead rabbit, they can’t catch it or get sick from it. People who hunt rabbits as a food source also don’t need to worry.’ Both ORC and NZVA suggest you talk to your vet if you have any concerns. 5

farmers market says farewell The inaugural summer season of the Arrowtown Farmers Market is coming to an end, with the last market on Sunday 25 March. This time last year the founding committee members began working with the Arrowtown Village Association, the Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association and QLDC to make the long-mooted farmers market a reality. 'Anyone can have an idea,' says AFM secretary Sue Patterson, 'but it takes tenacity and commitment to create a weekly market that has fast become a staple part of the Arrowtown landscape.' Sue says the market has become a regular meeting place for locals to catch up, add to their weekly shop and listen to live music. 'It makes the most of the wonderful atmosphere that only Arrowtown can offer.'

your flop-free recipe trio of oysters
24 oysters pear mignonette
Âź cup red wine vinegar 1 Tbsp minced shallot Âź tsp freshly ground black pepper 1 pear, thinly sliced into matchsticks
horseradish and lime
juice of half lime prosciutto and worcestershire Âź cup prepared horseradish sauce 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce per (I like to use Montie's, oyster a locally made brand) 2 slices prosciutto, lightly pan-fried zest of lime and chopped finely I like to serve these on spoons on a tray so that guests can easily help themselves. For the pear mignonette, whisk vinegar, shallot and pepper together and set aside. Drain oysters and place one on each spoon. For pear mignonette, drizzle a tablespoon of sauce over the oyster and arrange pear on top. For horseradish, mix the lime juice into the horseradish and place a tablespoon over the oysters. Grate some lime zest over. For prosciutto, drizzle a tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce over and sprinkle with diced prosciutto.
