orbus feedback The Arrowtown Village Association wants to know what you think about the new bus service. Chairperson Noel Beggs says the AVA has been asked to give feedback to Otago Regional Council, but first the association needs to know what the community thinks. ‘We want to hear what’s good about the new service, and what could be better,’ says Noel. ‘If you don’t take the bus, what’s stopping you? We want to know it all!’ To have your input, email

fire brigade steps up
Arrowtown Volunteer Fire Brigade has become the first brigade in the Queenstown Lakes District to go to First Response status. After four full days of training with St John Ambulance instructors, 15 members of the brigade have earned their Medical First Responder qualification. That means the brigade will be better trained and equipped to deal with a wider range of medical emergencies. The move will result in quicker access to care in Arrowtown. Deputy Chief Fire Officer Steve Murch points out the brigade can usually get to a medical incident in the Arrowtown area ahead of the ambulance. ‘That can make a life-anddeath difference if someone is experiencing a serious asthma attack, anaphylaxis or a diabetic emergency,’ he says, ‘especially if the ambulance is delayed.’ St John has supplied the brigade with a first response medical pack, which includes pain relief and life-saving drugs such as adrenalin that first responders are qualified to administer. Steve says First Response status means the brigade will turn out to more medical calls than ever. ‘Don’t be too surprised if you call an ambulance and a few minutes later the fire brigade turns up. The ambulance will be on its way – we’re just there to help you until they arrive.’ 3
councillor comment From Arrowtown councillor Scott Stevens: February is Aotearoa Bike Challenge month, a project to encourage more people to travel by bike. The Wakatipu has some of the best off-road bike trails in the country but most cyclists going to work or school will need to use the roads. We need to share the road and in Arrowtown that means reducing your speed. QLDC is investigating reducing the speed limit in Arrowtown to 40 kph and in the CBD to 25 kph. Our roads are not designed to be driven at higher speeds with kids and tourists on bikes or walking. It might take a minute longer to drive across town. But that’s a small price to pay and might encourage more of us to get on our bikes. The upgraded Ramshaw Lane carpark has made a huge difference to parking issues. The landscaping team is booked for tree planting in early winter with under planting in spring. We have also started to fence off the car encroachment on the library reserve after the decision to put green space first and keep cars within the formed parking space. This will mean most library users who use cars will have to walk from the Ramshaw Lane carpark – or get on your bike!

Arrowtown School parent Carrie Pritchard is on a mission to keep bike-riding kids safe. She says she was prompted into action after nearmisses while cycling to school on Adamson Drive. ‘Two days in a row we’ve had a car coming the other way, and another heading our way. Rather than slowing down and waiting for the passing car to go before overtaking my 6-year-old, they’ve squeezed through giving him 0.5 m clearance… And I’m watching this from behind, horrified.’ Carrie points out the Road Code states that you should leave at least 1.5 m between your vehicle and a cyclist; wait for a clear space before passing a cyclist on a narrow road; and take extra care around young cyclists. ‘On Adamson Drive there is simply not enough space for a vehicle to overtake a cyclist when another vehicle is coming the other way.’ Carrie acknowledges that people aren’t necessarily aware of the lack of room they are giving young cyclists ‘It is particularly difficult to judge a safe distance when driving a large vehicle like a four-wheeldrive or SUV.’ She asks Arrowtown residents to remember this: leave a safe zone for cyclists. You never know what might cause them to veer off-line – potholes, broken glass, litter, strong wind or just being a wobbly beginner rider. 5

an artistic eye In his five years as professional photographer, Bolivian-born Carlos Biggeman has worked as official photographer for events in New Zealand and Australia, but it is out of his assignments in his birth country that his exhibition at the Lakes District Museum grew. Carlos, who has lived in New Zealand since 2006, was accredited photographer at the Carnaval de Oruro for the Bolivian newspaper La Patria in 2015 and for the TV channel Bolivision in 2016. The Carnaval de Oruro is on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. In this centuries-old festival Catholic and pagan traditions meld as tens of thousands of dancers make a pilgrimage through Oruro over three days and nights, in a pageant of colour, movement and religious devotion. Carlos’s work is recognised internationally and has been exhibited overseas and in New Zealand. In 2013 he received from General Governor Sir Jerry Mateparae the National Down Syndrome Achievement Award. His carnaval photographs will be on display at the museum gallery until 11 March. 8

your flop-free recipe pork, prawn and coriander gyoza
filling 250 g pork mince 200 g raw peeled prawns, chopped 3 spring onions, chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed small handful coriander, roughly chopped ½ tsp shiaoxing wine 1 Tbsp light soy sauce 1 tsp ginger, minced ½ tsp sesame oil dipping sauce ½ inch piece ginger, julienned 1 Tbsp chinese black vinegar ½ tsp asian chilli oil 2 Tbsp soy sauce 1 Tbsp water to make dumplings 275 g packet dumpling wrappers 2 Tbsp vegetable oil ⅓ cup chicken stock Place all the filling ingredients in a bowl and stir well until just combined. Cover and chill for 10 minutes. While the prawn and pork mixture is chilling prepare the dipping sauce by mixing all the ingredients in a bowl. Set aside at room temperature for up to 3 hours until ready to serve. Stir again briefly before serving. Working with half a dozen wrappers at a time, place them 10
on a clean flat surface. Place a wrapper on your palm, then put 1 heaped teaspoon of the filling in the centre. Moisten the edges with a wet finger and fold over to form a half-moon shape. Press to form some tiny pleats along the edge to seal. Shape the dumpling so that the base is flat. Place finished dumpling on the floured surface and repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling. Heat the oil and stock in a large nonstick frying pan until bubbling gently. Add the dumplings (you may need to cook in batches). Cover with a lid and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove the lid and simmer for another 5 minutes until the liquid evaporates and the underside is golden brown. Cook remaining batches in the same way (you may need additional stock). Serve dumplings with the dipping sauce. Sprinkle over some spring onions and coriander. Yum! Makes 20–30
