prohibited fire season The Arrowtown Volunteer Fire Brigade has been having a busy time of it lately with numerous grass and scrub fires. CFO Murray Forward says the conditions are tinder dry and the smallest thing from a discarded cigarette butt to a spark from stone hit by a lawnmower can start a fire. Even after rain the fire danger will very quickly go back to extreme. So take care out there and heed the total fire ban – right now the only fire permitted in the outdoors is a gas barbecue.
landmark achievement Arrowtown’s historic precinct and the Chinese Village have been recognised as a heritage icon under the Landmarks Whenua Tohunga scheme, a joint initiative of the Ministry for Culture and Heritage, the Department of Conservation and Heritage New Zealand. Director General of Conservation Lou Sanson says the Landmarks programme provides an awesome opportunity to share our most exceptional heritage with more visitors. Last year Queenstown Lakes District Council put forward six sites for consideration for the scheme, and Arrowtown and the Kawarau Suspension Bridge were both selected. Arrowtown’s inclusion is an acknowledgement of the two sides of the gold rush coin – the preserved avenue where wealthy banks and merchants traded in the mid 1800s, and the restored huts in Bush Creek that reveal the more modest lifestyles of the Chinese miners. Lakes District Museum director David Clarke says Landmark status for 12 sites in Otago recognises places that have shaped our nation and have created our stories and that history comes to life at these sites. ‘It is a pat on the back for all those people in Arrowtown who have worked for years to protect and restore Arrowtown’s heritage.’ 3
councillor comment From Arrowtown councillor Scott Stevens: In June 2018 QLDC will be approving a Ten Year Plan to address the infrastructure issues that places like Arrowtown have been experiencing, particularly with our water supply. Although this summer is one out of the ordinary, the fact is we need a new $1.5m bore and a new $3.6m reservoir to cope with demand. Both are in the draft Ten Year Plan and this document will be out for public consultation in the coming months. However, infrastructure is only half the problem. Demand management is just as critical. Some people think there is an endless supply. There is not, and the fact our reservoir got down to critically low levels over Christmas/New Year is proof of that. Water management is something we can all help with and we thank all the residents of Arrowtown for answering the call to pull back on the garden and lawn watering. water restrictions Water restrictions are still in place but if you are smart, the garden does not have to die. Using a sprinkler or irrigation system with a timer for 30 minutes between midnight and 6am will keep the flowers blooming and not stress our water supply. Under the current water restrictions for Arrowtown hand-held hoses can be used between 6 am and midday and no irrigation is to be done between midday and midnight. Setting up your watering to a timer for 30 minutes in the wee small hours is by far the best option for your garden and the council reservoir. a&p show a scorcher On Saturday about 4500 people enjoyed a family day out at the 104th annual Lake Hayes A&P Show, though numbers were down by 400 on last year. Event organiser Pip Norton attributes this to the weather: ‘It was so hot and there is not a lot of natural shade at the Showgrounds. Thankfully we had free water this year supplied by Ecowai, we went through around 450 litres.’ For next year the show committee will aim to be ready for any weather. ‘We’ll look shade options, be it gazebos or shade sails – then if it rains we are still covered!’ Pip says nearly 110 horses competed in the show ring and Queenstown Dog Agility Club kept the crowd entertained demonstrating their pooches’ skills. ‘Talia Allison bareback rider was brilliant, that is one very skilful lady. It was good to see her family joining her – the show is all about family and getting together and catching up in what has to be the most stunningly beautiful A&P Showground in New Zealand.’ Make a date for next year’s event: Saturday 12 January 2019.

QLDC would like your input on Stage 2 of the Proposed District Plan. Stage 2 is made up of six new topics addressing Transport, Earthworks, Signs, Visitor Accommodation, Wakatipu Basin Land-use and Open Space and Recreation. 750 ml bottle red wine 1 lemon, halved and sliced 1 orange, halved and sliced 1 green apple, thinly sliced 2 peaches, cut into wedges 2 Tbsp sugar 2 Tbsp brandy 2 cups ginger ale or soda water lots of ice cubes Pour wine into a jug and squeeze the juice from the lemon and orange into the wine. Toss in the fruit wedges and slices and add sugar and brandy. Chill overnight to marry the flavours. Add ginger ale or club soda just before serving.
