family fun at lake hayes show Horses, dogs and cabbage – what more could you want from an A&P Show? ‘This year our committee has pulled together a truly great show,’ says Lake County A&P Society president Phillip Bunn. ‘There’s three new equestrian classes, dog agility demonstrations, your fermenting skills are wanted in the pavilion and Arrowtown’s finest, the Brentwood Duo, will be singing in the afternoon.’ In the Stonewood Homes Arena there’s a new pleasure riding section that includes an obstacle course. ‘It’ll be great to watch and opens up the show to a new group of riders,’ says Phillip. And by popular demand, talented bareback rider Talia Allison is back to show off her skills. In the Baxter Design Group Pavilion, in addition to the traditional cooking, gardening and floral art there are new categories including, right on trend, a fermented veggie section. And once again it’s time for kids get creative, making paper planes, puppets, masks and roosters, the list goes on. Of course there will also be entertainment for the young ones, a Fashion in the Field competition, an eclectic mix of trade stalls, pets, sheep and the grand parade. ‘We’re really looking forward to the Brentwood Duo in the afternoon,’ says Phillip. ‘They are making it big on the international stage, so it will be something special to have them back home.’ Arrowtown Lifestyle Retirement Village is the Lake Hayes A&P Show’s main sponsor. ‘We’re delighted to have them on board,’ says Phillip. ‘Bringing people together where town meets country, creating memories with loved ones and catching up with someone you have not seen in a while all makes for a great day out in the Wakatipu.’ The Lake Hayes A&P Show starts at 10 am on Saturday 13 January. blessings all round St John’s church hall in Arrowtown was awash with Christmas spirit last Thursday as volunteers gathered to pack donated gifts into more than 180 Baskets of Blessing. The hampers were then delivered to individuals and families nominated because they have been going through tough times. A fair few of the gifts were contributed by staff and clients of Arrowtown's Remarkable Vets, as well as the children of Arrowtown School. Coordinator Tam Schurmann says, ‘We had a fantastic turn-out of volunteers for our Christmas basket-packing day, with mums arriving with their babies and children, a few businesses bringing along their employees, men and women from young to old.’ Many of the volunteers had themselves received a Basket of Blessing during the year and took the opportunity to 'pay it forward'. Baskets of Blessing isn’t just a Christmas thing. This small community project gives out dozens of baskets each month to people who could use a boost. They recently won the Health and Wellbeing section of the Trustpower Community Awards. You can find them on Facebook by searching for @basketblessingspage. 4

Last week routine testing found a high level of E. coli in the water at the Mill Creek end of Lake Hayes and a notice on the Land Air Water Aotearoa website warned there was a high risk of infection for swimmers. Unfortunately many people did not know about this and continued to go in the water. The test result was one out of the box for Lake Hayes: overall it is Štoddweeks.nz considered low risk, and in three years of testing there have never been numbers anywhere near the 921 cfu/100 mL found last week. If you’d like to check on water quality before you go next, testing is done on Mondays and the results are posted to lawa.org.nz by Wednesday. Otago Regional Council advises that, even if the Monday results look good, it's best not to swim within 48 hours of heavy rain.

governor-general visits school On Monday the governor-general, Dame Patsy Reddy, and her husband Sir David Gascoigne visited Arrowtown School with the Queen’s Baton Relay. The baton has been touring the world since March ahead of the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Among the lucky pupils to meet Dame Patsy was 12-year-old Jess MacDonald (left). ‘They are very nice people who are easy to talk to,’ she says. As one of the designated ambassadors for the school – alongside Rudi Beaven and Jess Dredge – she was one of the few people privileged to hold the baton itself: ‘It is made out of macadamia wood to represent the past and recycled plastic from the Gold Coast where the Commonwealth Games are set to start in April next year.’ 11
post office market The Post Office’s annual market day will be held on the Library Green on Wednesday 27 December, when throngs of locals and holiday-makers will make their way around dozens of stalls selling local arts and crafts, food, plants and much more. This vibrant and hugely popular event is a fundraiser for the Arrowtown Post Office, which was bought by the community from New Zealand Post in 1991 after it was threatened with closure. Funds raised will go towards ongoing costs of maintaining the 102-year-old building and its gardens.

play golf, help the fire brigade Arrowtown Volunteer Fire Brigade will be the fortunate ones to benefit from Altrusa Queenstown’s annual charity golf tournament in January. CFO Murray Forward says the brigade is very grateful to be chosen to receive the proceeds from the event. ‘Thanks to this donation we’ll be able to buy rescue equipment like a new Stokes basket and scoop stretcher, and maybe a ladder and chainsaw too.’ The tournament, which has a shotgun start at 9 am on Sunday 14 January at Queenstown Golf Club in Kelvin Heights, is men’s and ladies’ Stableford, mixed field. There will be plenty of excellent prizes, including merit prizes and fun competitions, plus raffles and live and silent auctions. It costs only $40 to enter and that includes a lunch platter.
