last long lunch? The seventh Arrowtown Long Lunch was blessed yet again by perfect weather. A record 600 diners enjoyed the offerings of 14 restaurants, and this year's charity was Oxfam. The future of the Long Lunch is uncertain, with organisers posting on Facebook after the event that it was the final one. Fingers crossed it can be saved!
pool opens for summer After a run of hot days, the idea of spending a lazy afternoon beside the pool is very appealing just now. Good job the Arrowtown Memorial Pool has been filled and is getting warmer every day! A traditional summer hang-out for local families, the pool is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. There is something for everyone – a 30 m lap pool, separate toddler pool, a picnic area and snack kiosk. Although it isn’t currently heated by more than the sun, the water temperature ranges from 18°C to 25°C depending on sunshine hours. For opening day, QLDC is holding a family fun day, with live music, kids’ games and pool toys, on Sunday 10 December from noon till 3 pm. Sunday is also registration day for Arrowtown Swim Club, and they’ll be having a fundraising raffle and sausage sizzle. The club provides swimming lessons for schoolaged children, with squad training for more competent swimmers to refine technique and gain fitness. Season membership is just $25 for an individual and $50 for families. This year Arrowtown pool (in the heart of Arrowtown beside the fire station) will be open seven days a week 11 am to 6 pm from 10 December to 3 March (except Christmas Day and New Year’s Day). It’s a bargain to swim there (adults $3, seniors $2, kids just $1.50) and season passes are available. Just remember, you can’t drop young kids there and run – a parental supervision policy applies. farmers market launch party QLDC mayor Jim Boult will be officially opening the new Arrowtown Farmers Market on Sunday 10 December at 10 am on the Library Green in Arrowtown. The market was successfully soft-launched on 5 November with five vendors and has since then has grown steadily – organisers hope there will be 20 vendors before the summer is over. Hundreds of locals have made the most of the opportunity to buy local produce, snapping up fruit and veg, flowers, free range eggs, charcuterie, smoked salmon and freshly baked pastries. And all to the musical accompaniment of local singer Sofia Machray. The market has a range of family-friendly activities planned for the opening, including live music, face-painting and some animals to pet, and Dr Compost will be on hand to give advice about home composting dilemmas.

songs for christmas The Remarkable Vocals Choral Ensemble is marking the holiday season with a concert of songs for Christmas at the Thomas L Brown Gallery this weekend. Directed by Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association co-ordinator Sue Patterson, the popular and versatile group has prepared a varied selection of songs, from pieces drawn from Bach's Christmas Oratorio and Handel's Messiah to modern choral works by Bob Chilcott and Kim Andre Arneson that provide stunning moments of reflection. Traditional English and French carols come to life with new arrangements and a little jazz adds a twist to the programme. There will also be Mozart and Liszt from guest pianist Chris Litten. Tickets, which include complimentary refreshments, are $30 adult (free for school age children) and are available from the Lakes District Museum or from one of the performers. Be sure to buy your tickets ahead of time: door sales are not available as these concerts are usually sold out.

your flop-free recipe christmas hoisin glazed salmon
½ cup low sodium soy sauce 1 cup water ¼ cup hoisin sauce 2–3 cloves garlic small knob of fresh ginger, grated 2 Tbsp honey 2 limes 2 Tbsp sesame oil side of salmon sesame seeds for garnish pomegranate seeds for garnish To make the hoisin glaze, purée the soy sauce, water, hoisin, garlic, ginger, honey and juice of 1 lime in a blender or food processor. Transfer to small pan over mediumhigh heat. Simmer until the mixture reduces to a syrupy consistency that will stick to the salmon when brushed on. Remove from heat. Preheat oven (fan bake) to 180ºC. Pour sesame oil in a baking dish (nonstick) and arrange the salmon in the pan. Brush the salmon with a thin layer of glaze, reserving the rest of the glaze for later. Bake for 20 minutes. Remove from oven, brush with glaze again, and bake for another 20 minutes. You might need to adjust the cooking time depending on the thickness and size of the salmon. When the salmon is done (it will be firm and flake apart easily), remove from oven and brush with the glaze 14
one more time before serving. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and pomegranate seeds. Serves 8-10
