christmas fete St Paul's Church in Berkshire St is marking the start of the Christmas season with two days of festivities. On the weekend of 2 to 3 December from 10 am to 4 pm the historic church and cottage will host a themed floral display, stalls will sell produce, cakes and plants, and there will be displays by craft groups and schools as well as carol singing.
wayne’s marathon effort They say there’s no gain without pain. Well Arrowtown’s Wayne Foley has certainly had the pain, but it’s the Wakatipu High School Foundation that has had most of the gain. The 57-year-old development manager had never run a marathon before he took on the Queenstown Marathon as a fundraiser for the Wakatipu High School Foundation, which raises money to support school programmes. After months of training, running up to 65 km each week, eating healthily and dropping 13 kg, Wayne completed the event in 4:43:35, well under his target of 5 hours. He says the highlight was the last 8 km. ‘Your body is stuffed after 4 hours and most people around you are walking. The difference is mental – I never stopped running and kept telling myself I have trained to do this 8km and I just kept pushing as hard as I could. I would run it all over again just to be back in that situation.’ Wayne raised $1000 for every mile he battled through in the event, reaching a grand total of $26,484. Among the programmes that will benefit is the Awhi Fund, which ensures financial difficulty doesn’t limit a student’s school participation. The foundation’s executive officer, Jennifer Belmont, says, ‘We see first-hand the impact that the Foundation provides to the kids and know that those who support it are truly making a huge difference in many lives.’ Wayne was one of the initiators of the foundation. ‘He and his wife Julia are examples to us all of how to live and support our community. We are overjoyed by their generosity and spirit.’

community venue underway After two seasons playing home games at Queenstown Events Centre, Arrowtown Rugby Club is getting closer to a return to Jack Reid Park. Work has started on the Arrowtown Community and Sports Centre, with the main construction phase starting in January under Brosnan Construction. The building will serve as rugby club rooms and Scout den and will include a bar and kitchen, changing rooms, showers, toilets and function spaces. Rugby club president Simon Spark is looking forward to moving in. 'Our club culture has suffered due to playing at Frankton...we really need our own home to form our identity. Our sponsors and supporters have found it difficult to engage with the team playing at Frankton.' Simon expects work on the building to be finished by June 2018, when it will be gifted to Council to manage, and is hoping that the field will be enlarged to regulation size after the end of the season.

mango immortalised Mango is a ginger cat who is usually found in the library, staff room, playground or even in the sick bay comforting an upset child at Arrowtown school. The Carter family are his real owners, but they happily share him with the the school and say Mango is always sad during the school holidays when the kids are away. Thanks to teacher and writer Wendy Clarke, Mango now has his own picture book. Mango the Arrowtown School Cat tells a gentle story about Tom's first day at school, how he meets Mango, conquers his fears and makes new friends. It has been illustrated by 5-, 6- and 7-year olds from the school and designed by Melissa Hinves. Arrowtown School will receive all the proceeds from the sale of this book, which costs $20. Copies will be available after Tuesday 5 December at the school office and the Lakes District Museum, just in time to go under the Christmas tree. 8

your flop-free recipe cardrona lamb rack
2 lamb racks, trimmed 100 g shelled pistachios, crushed 3 Tbsp fresh thyme leaves 4 Tbsp panko bread crumbs freshly ground black pepper & salt turnip rosti 450 g potatoes such as Sebago, peeled and grated 300 g turnips, peeled and grated 1 small onion, finely diced 2 cloves garlic, crushed 3 Tbsp fresh thyme leaves freshly ground black pepper & salt salsa verde 2 big handfuls flatleaf parsley 1 bunch fresh mint leaves 4 Tbsp fresh thyme leaves 2 cloves garlic 6 anchovy fillets 4 Tbsp capers, rinsed ¼ cup gerkins 3 Tbsp red wine vinegar ¼–½ cup good quality olive oil tocket leaves and a few blackberries for garnish Preheat oven to 230°C. Allow lamb to come to room temperature. Mix pistachios, thyme, breadcrumbs and salt and pepper. Press mixture into the lamb. Transfer lamb to an oven tray and roast for 16–20 minutes. Remove from oven, cover and rest for 10–15 minutes. Heat olive oil in a medium nonstick frying pan over medium heat. Add 10
all of the rosti ingredients, stir to combine and coat evenly with the oil. Cover and cook for 10 minutes. Place a plate over the pan, carefully turn rosti, and slide back into the pan. Cook for another 10 minutes, or until golden and cooked through. Transfer rosti to a serving plate and top with thyme. To make the salsa verde, place all of the ingredients in a food processor and pulse until well combined. This can be made a day or so in advance. To assemble, place some rosti on a plate. Toss some rocket leaves over, slice the lamb between bones to separate the racks into cutlets. Allow 3 cutlets per serve. Arrange cutlets over rocket and spoon some salsa verde over the lamb.
