Here you’ll find a selection of unique handcrafted items including stylish homewares, clothing and jewellery, arts and crafts toys and games, and much more. Entry is by gold coin donation.
fresh faces at trolley derby This year’s GJ Gardner Trolley Derby was blessed with good racing, good crowds and good weather – until the prize giving at least. Scattered among the old faces – the winner was last year’s champion Jody Blatchley (Gravity Quad), fairly comfortably over Richard ‘The Bridesmaid’ Fleck (Monk Earthworks) – were some new drivers. Third place was taken by Louise Wright on debut with team MOA, using Gravity Quad’s spare race trolley. Event organiser Anton Schmitz says, ‘She was running hot for the final but spun in the semi against Richard and so had to play off for third.’ There was controversy before the race with a protest against the MOA trolley as it had won three times already, but some last-minute negotiation meant it was cleared to race. Nine-year-old Arrowtowner Albie Boden became the youngest ever racer. ‘He went really well improving his lap time from 1:25 down to 1:16 and I believe no crashes,’ says Anton. ‘We were really impressed at how he was so calm through the racing and I hope he’ll be back again.’ The gap between the front of the field and the back is becoming wider, with Jody’s 39:49-second lap breaking the 40-second barrier for the first time. This has led to a call for different racing classes, something Anton will consider for next year. The derby raised somewhere between $10,000 and $12,000 for the community preschool. 3
free buses - for a week Arrowtowners will soon have a new, cheaper way to get into town as Orbus Queenstown launches its service with a week of free rides (normally $2 with a GoCard) and a free GoCard (normally $5). The new route will be from Arrowtown Four Square to Arthurs Point, via Ramshaw Lane, Lake Hayes Road, Quail Rise, Frankton and Queenstown town centre, and will no longer deviate into Lake Hayes Estate. It runs from 6.02 am (outbound) to 10.54 pm (inbound). The service will not be ‘hail and ride’. The new Arrowtown stops will be at: • Ramshaw Lane, on the river side opposite the existing bus stop behind the museum • Centennial Avenue, both sides of the road by the holiday park • Adamson Drive, opposite the existing stop at the Four Square. The free ride / free GoCard promotion runs from 20 to 26 November.

Remarkable Vets have found a novel way to help families going through tough times. They have started a 'reverse advent calendar’ in which they add Christmas gifts like luxury food items and presents for kids instead of receiving them. Remarkable Vets will collect donated items for a month and then give them to the local charity Baskets of Blessings to be packaged up for families in need. your flop-free recipe black rice pudding w asian flavours
2 cups black rice ½ tsp salt 1 cinnamon stick 1 whole star anise pinch nutmeg 1 Tbsp grated fresh ginger 2 fresh kaffir lime leaves, finely shredded 1 cup water 1½ cups coconut milk ½ can coconut cream ¼ cup soft brown sugar ¼ tsp chilli flakes fruit of choice to serve yoghurt to serve coconut shreds Place rice, salt, cinnamon stick, star anise, nutmeg, ginger, lime leaves, water and coconut milk in a pot. Simmer for 30 minutes. Add coconut cream, sugar and chilli. Simmer for 15–20 minutes or until the rice is cooked. I like mine to be a little chewy and nutty. Serve warm with fruit of choice and drizzle with chosen yoghurt and sprinkle over coconut shreds. Tuck in and enjoy. Serves 4 10
