fire brigade fireworks The Arrowtown Volunteer Fire Brigade will be having their annual fireworks night on Saturday 4 November at Wilcox Green (on Nairn St). This year’s event promises to be bigger and better than ever, with fireworks sponsored by both the brigade and local businesses. The show will start at about 9 pm but get there early to enjoy a hot drink from Espresso2Go, who will be donating 10% of their takings on the night, and an ice cream from Mr Whippy. With a big turnout expected, CFO Murray Forward asks people to walk there if possible.
fan-tan takes off Arrowtown’s newest eatery, Fan-Tan Kitchen & Bar, took off like a rocket last week, says co-owner Sir Michael Hill – and he’s drawn a cartoon to mark the occasion. Dave Arnold, another co-owner and the driving force behind the venture, says the opening celebrations were ‘amazing’. On Wednesday the restaurant welcomed 100 businesses from the Chamber of Commerce, and the following night over 300 made it to the official opening. The action continued into the weekend as locals took advantage of opening deals and entertainment. ‘Everyone I spoke to was so complimentary and loved the look and feel of Fan-Tan,’ Dave says. ‘We’re still making tweaks and changes from feedback as we’ve gone out of our way to find out what people think and the experience they’ve had whilst they’ve visited.’ Dave is grateful to friends, family, tradesmen, businesses and local residents for their support. ‘Our staff have also gone above and beyond to make the launch of Fan-Tan so successful, so a big thank-you to them and everyone for making the launch of Fan-Tan truly awesome.’

councillor comment From Arrowtown councillor Scott Stevens: ramshaw lane car park It's all systems go on the Ramshaw Lane car park as council contractors race to have the new layout open by the beginning of December. With the existing trees removed, the space is looking rather industrial at the moment but with garden and tree planting part of the renewal program I am confident we will end up with a great Arrowtown solution to our current parking woes. Note the use of the word ‘current’ as all predictions are Arrowtown's popularity as a visitor destination will continue to grow. looking ahead Those who were involved in the Arrowtown Shaping Our Future forum will know we cannot sustain such a growth in vehicle numbers to our village and we have no appetite for cutting out more and more river reserve. So where to next? Unless autonomous cars become the norm we will need park and ride facilities on the edge of town. Maybe Millbrook Corner or Arrow Junction? Food for thought and anyone with bright ideas on the future of Arrowtown are encouraged to get involved with our Arrowtown Village Association and Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association. If there's one thing being your Arrowtown councillor has taught me, it’s the passion Arrowtowners have for their corner of the Wakatipu – from predator and wilding tree control to air and water quality, town planning and heritage restoration. Keeping your thoughts and positive energy bottled up inside helps nobody and Arrowtown is much better for the contributions of our community. 4

arrowtowners on stage and off A whole posse of talented Arrowtown residents will tackle ABBA’s hits in the latest high-energy production from Showbiz Queenstown, Mamma Mia!. Nicole McLean took a 20-year hiatus from performing before bursting back into action as Velma Kelly in Chicago in 2013, and hasn’t looked back. She plays the outrageous flirt Tanya, and it’s the latest in a run of ‘strong sassy women’, roles that Nicole says she is drawn to. Justin Abbiss took an even longer break from the stage – 32 years – before playing Rooster in Annie last year. He says Showbiz Queenstown has been a revelation: ‘terrific folk, outstanding talent and boatloads of passion’. He has the role of Bill, one of the potential dads. Wakatipu High School student Hugh Taylor, who won Best Male Lead Actor in a Musical at the Otago-Southland Theatre Awards for his performance in the school's Catch Me If You Can, tackles groomsman Eddie. Other Arrowtowners in the ensemble are Becky Reid, Sienna Strachan, Tristan Taquet, Vanessa Woodward and Suzy Diamond. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, Arrowtown’s Hilary Finnie is production manager. She has been involved with more than 30 Showbiz Queenstown productions – generally doing publicity – starting with Godspell in 1990. Stand-out shows for Hilary were Cabaret, Chess, Les Miserables and Chicago with their professional production values. ‘Doug Kamo, our director for Mamma Mia! directed both Chess and Les Miserables, so audiences should expect an amazing show of similar calibre,’ she says. Mamma Mia! runs from 8 to 11 November at the Queenstown Events Centre (tickets from eventfinda.co.nz). 8

your flop-free recipe pulled pomegranate & mint lamb
glaze 2 cloves garlic, crushed 4 Tbsp pomegranate molasses 2 Tbsp oil juice of 1 lemon 1 tsp ground cumin lamb 1 large onion, thickly sliced 2 kg Quality Mark leg of lamb to serve 1 Tbsp soft butter and 1 Tbsp flour mixed to a paste 1 pomegranate, seeds removed ½ cup picked mint leaves, shredded Preheat the oven to 160°C. To make glaze, mix ingredients together in a small bowl. To make lamb, place the onion in the base of a non-metallic or enamel roasting dish and sit lamb on top. Pour glaze over then pour 200 ml water around lamb. Cover and slow-cook in oven for 3½ hours. 10
Remove cover and continue cooking lamb for a further 30 minutes until the meat is almost falling off the bone. To serve, place lamb on a warm serving platter and cover loosely with foil and a clean tea towel. Strain cooking juices into a saucepan and skim away any fat with a large spoon. Boil to reduce the sauce, then whisk in the thickening paste. Cook until sauce is syrupy and taste. If tart, add salt to balance flavour, then pour into a sauce jug. Remove cover from lamb and scatter over pomegranate seeds and fresh mint. Serves 8–10
