Lovers of the arts will get an exciting chance to slake their creative thirst at the upcoming Spring Arts Festival. Eleven hands-on workshops are the main focus of the three-day festival, which runs through the weekend starting Friday October 27. They take in the full range of the arts: painting skills, including Otago landscapes, print making, writing crime thrillers, a ‘knit-in’, photography, singing and guitar jamming. For Samuel Earp’s en plein air session, painters will leave the studio behind to work outdoors, and there is also an art workshop for youngsters. Workshops have been designed so that they can be enjoyed by both beginners and experienced practitioners. The workshop leaders are well known in their field, and many of them are members of the Arrowtown Creative Arts Society, which is staging the festival. The opening night on Friday 27 October at the Athenaeum Hall, ‘An Evening with Joe Bennett’, is sponsored by RD Petroleum and organisers are promising wine, cheese and fun. Joe is one of New Zealand’s most read writers, loved for his acerbic and insightful newspaper columns. He will be interviewed by crime writer Brian Stoddart. The festival will also include an exhibition at the museum, festival movie sessions at Dorothy Browns, an artist talk and open studios at local artists’ galleries – plus some surprises yet to be announced. The weekend wraps up on Sunday 29 October with a classical jazz quartet concert at Thomas Brown’s Gallery at 3 pm. Look out for the festival programme in your letterbox. axing the wildings The Arrowtown Choppers are holding a family-friendly ‘big chop’ on Saturday 15 October. Earlier this year at the last big chop over 100 people made a huge impact on wilding trees, and organiser Ben Teele is hoping for a great turnout again: ‘Having lots of volunteers up there will make a big difference to preserving the unique character and biodiversity of the hinterland behind Arrowtown.’ The hand-clearance work is part of a larger strategy to replace wilding trees around Arrowtown with more suitable trees. Following the Big Chop, for those who are keen to get stuck in on a regular basis, the Arrowtown Choppers meet on Thursday evenings after work to remove trees. For the Big Spring Chop people are asked to meet at 10 am at the Chinese Village to sign in, pick up tools and head up to the first saddle on Sawpit Gully for further instructions and a briefing. Alternatively just head up anytime between 10 am and 2 pm to join the group. Choppers are asked to bring their own tools if they have them, extra food and drink and appropriate clothing and footwear. The best-kept secret in Arrowtown – the name of the new restaurant opposite the Blue Door – has been revealed. The latest addition to the Saffron family will be called Fan-Tan, after a game popular with Chinese miners in the gold rush of the 1860s. It reflects a lively, fun approach to dining out, with tasty but affordable dishes that are designed to be shared. There’s plenty of courtyard seating at long tables, adding to the vibrancy and sense of community. The name also gives a hint to the food on offer here, which executive chef Sal Grant describes as Asian fusion. This is light, fresh cuisine with influences from all over Asia – think Thailand, Japan, Korea, Malaysia – and even very Kiwi dishes like lamb or pavlova have an Asian twist. The restaurant has been completely transformed since its earlier incarnations as Pesto and Agave. It’s lighter, brighter and warmer than ever, and huge glass doors link the alleyway to the restaurant and open out onto the courtyard on the other side. Again, the decor is a nod to gold rush times with a Victorian industrial feel.

your flop-free recipe beetroot and bean tabouleh
ž cup burghul wheat 2 small beetroot, washed and grated 4 spring onions, thinly sliced 1 cup sliced green beans, blanched 1 cup flat-leaf parsley, chopped Ÿ cup mint, chopped 4 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil 4 Tbsp lemon juice handful toasted seeds Cover the burghul wheat in a bowl with 500 ml water and leave it for an hour. Add all of the other ingredients together except lemon juice, olive oil and seeds, and mix lightly. Drain the burghul in a colander and then transfer to a teatowel, squeezing out excess water. Add to the vege mixture and combine. Mix the lemon juice and olive oil together and drizzle over the tabouleh. Grate a little lemon zest and sprinkle with toasted seeds. Serves 6 10
